Prayer breakfast back on, without notifying a certain someone

Friday, May 13, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* SJ-R

There will be a Governor’s Prayer Breakfast this spring after all, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office said Thursday. The event is now planned to take place at the Executive Mansion on May 26.

A spokesman for the volunteer organization that puts on the breakfast told The State Journal-Register Monday that the event was being postponed this year and was unlikely to take place – breaking an annual tradition that began in 1963.

The governor’s office told the newspaper Thursday that Rauner was disappointed that the event wasn’t going to happen, so the office reached out to several local and statewide organizations to see if they would be willing to continue the tradition.

But check this out

Glenn Hodas, a member of the all-volunteer organization that had been planning the breakfast, had said Monday that the state’s budget impasse made it difficult to find speakers, and that lawmakers were busy with session negotiations.

“I appreciate learning from you what the governor intends to do,” Hodas told a reporter Thursday evening, “and we’re planning on meeting to discuss it.”

Hodas, you will recall, was Sen. Sam McCann’s media advisor.

What a bunch of grass bowls.

Seriously? The leadership principles of the ILGOP are woefully confused.

Politicizing a pray breakfast? Who do you think you are? Ben Carson?

  4. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:41 pm:

I say have a “prayer off”. Who can pray harder?

  5. - Shake - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:56 pm:

    Let’s Have A Budget Breakfast….

    “Let’s Have A Budget Breakfast….”

    I’ll say a prayer for that…

    Same old Same old

  9. - Red Ranger - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:19 pm:

It is a bit ironic that many of the tactics and actions that the Raunerites criticize Madigan for are the very same things they do.

  10. - Honeybear - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:20 pm:

Calvin was right. We are so depraved.

  11. - Wensicia - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:28 pm:

Sorry, Hodas, no breakfast for you!

  12. - Ahoy! - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:58 pm:

There is a lot of speculation that Hodas and others were playing games. Was the decision to not hold the prayer breakfast decided by the full volunteer board or a select small group of people who then notified the board? The entire thing did not small right from the beginning.

Besides, does anybody actually go the prayer breakfast to listen to the speaker?

  13. - Just saying... - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:00 pm:

Another shining example of Rauner’s inability to accept reality…

  14. - wordslinger - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:05 pm:

Using a “prayer breakfast” as a vehicle for political payback?

Who are they going to be praying to, exactly?

  15. - In the Middle - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:06 pm:

It’s so political I would applaud the end of the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast.

  16. - RNUG - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:10 pm:

    Word - The Almighty Dollar.

Many years ago myself and a friend toyed around with the idea of incorporating The Church of The Almighty Dollar to get the tax exemptions … but we decided there were too many people that would have thought we were serious.

  17. - One of Three Puppets - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:11 pm:

Not sure this is a big deal. But I will say that Hodas did a great job with that race and the GOP should look to use him more because he took a flawed candidate that was outspent 4-1 and won. Stop with the circular firing squad GOP. Bring winners into the fold and don’t exile them.

  18. - Indochine - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:13 pm:

Sorry, but no sympathies for Hodas. He had to know what was coming. He can console himself with all that Kirk Dillard money.

–Sorry, but no sympathies for Hodas. He had to know what was coming.–

LOL, is it a prayer breakfast or a meeting of The Five Families?

It seems to be keeping in spirit with the latter.

  20. - @MisterJayEm - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:27 pm:

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward. But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

    Matthew 6:5-6

    – MrJM

  21. - Honeybear - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:55 pm:

As they say here in East St Louis Illinois

    That’s petty

Its not about Hodas He’s a big boy and kudos to him for beating the rich and infamous. Its about Rauners shallowness and inability to accept defeat like a man. Its a prayer breakfast for gods sake (pun intended).

  23. - Indochine - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 3:33 pm:

I’m not defending it. But anybody who didn’t think that the McCann victory wasn’t going to have consequences for all involved isn’t in touch with reality.

And for the partisans posting above, mess with the Speaker or someone/something he cares about and see if there are not consequences.

Sure, it is a prayer breakfast, and they will prove it can be accomplished without Hodas. I’m really astonished that in this poisonous political environment that anyone is surprised at any pettiness on display.

  24. - A guy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 3:55 pm:

Seems to me finding a legislator to talk at such an event would be easier to find than a political operative to sincerely run a prayer breakfast.

    Thy name ain’t Hodas.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:00 pm:

    - A Guy -

    I’m sure you’re fine with Rauner’s pettiness.

    That’s fun.

Pettiness at a prayer breakfast - thy name is Rauner.

  26. - wordslinger - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:03 pm:

–Seems to me finding a legislator to talk at such an event would be easier to find than a political operative to sincerely run a prayer breakfast.–

How do you “sincerely” put on a prayer breakfast, anyway? What are your criteria for determining who is and is not worthy of such a task?

  27. - Precinct Captain - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:05 pm:

    ==- Indochine - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 3:33 pm:==

So when Rauner said “shake up Springfield,” what did he mean? That he was going to shake on down into the same political pit?

  28. - Louis G. Atsaves - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:20 pm:

What a state! Can’t even sponsor a prayer breakfast without a tussle! I’m a little confused reading the entire news article. Who wasn’t notified about this? The article doesn’t seem to tell us.

  29. - A guy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:23 pm:

The inference is that Mr. Hodas has that morning free.

  30. - wordslinger - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 4:28 pm:

    – I’m a little confused reading the entire news article. Who wasn’t notified about this? The article doesn’t seem to tell us.–

Really? The group that normally puts it on, of which Hodas is a member.
