Maybe this will convince Democrats to cut a deal?

Friday, Jun 24, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Greg Hinz

“If I can get a part of what I want here, I’ll hit the road” and promote Illinois’ benefits around the world, [Gov. Bruce Rauner] said.

He also said

“I will travel much more… If we can get part of what we’re advocating done, I will live on the road a lot… I’m not going to charge taxpayers, but I’m going to travel around the country, I’m going to travel around the world - China, Germany, UK, Japan, Korea.”

Paging Speaker Madigan!

    Um, that’s your job, regardless.

Didn’t he claim he was already doing that?

  3. - illinois manufacturer - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:30 am:

Perhaps he could use his skills to negotiate economic peace in Europe….

Does that mean Goldberg will be “Charles in Charge” while the Governor is out galavantin’?

  6. - Give Me A Break - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:30 am:

Too bad he grounded the state planes, he could leave this afternoon.

  7. - Dave Katy - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:32 am:

We should give him a chance and see if his plan works. It’s not like the plans of the last 50 years has been working in this state. Just saying….

  8. - GOP Extremist - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:32 am:

He should go to Fantasy Island as well.

  9. - Joe M - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:33 am:

Redistricting looks like it could happen if it makes it on the ballot. Will that be enough for Rauner to declare victory and hit the road? Probably not.

If he needs more, for local government collective bargaining, let him take away the ability of local public employees to negotiate the color of their break rooms, declare victory, and hit the road. Worth a try!

===I’m going to travel around the world - China, Germany, UK, Japan, Korea===

It’s nice that your part-time retirement job is so flexible.

  11. - Formerly Known As... - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:34 am:

He needs something more to sell than =status quo=, and he will sell those changes globally as part of Illinois =new= image and appeal if he gets those changes.

The Dems might agree just to send him =anywhere but here= for a while. /s

  12. - Henry Francis - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:35 am:

Former DCEO director, now head of ILBEDC, Jim Schultz has supposedly been doing that. Although it has been kept quiet. Not sure how it was paid for.

  13. - Federalist - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:35 am:

Actually a very good idea. Just keep travelling.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:36 am:

Rauner thinks being governor is a joke.

Rauner has no idea what the job entails.

    How pathetic.

  15. - cdog - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:37 am:

This dude has a scary message that we just see a glimpse of when he is having an episode.

Not sure if we would be doing the world a favor by encouraging this.

  16. - Formerly Known as Frenchie M - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:37 am:

Apparently, Bruce missed staff training. Maybe he might want to reschedule with HR?

If he does, maybe someone in HR can explain that, yeah, Bruce, your job description already says you’re required to “promote Illinois’ benefits”. That’s a bullet point. That’s already there.

That same HR rep might also remind Bruce that the bullet point about promoting the state doesn’t include any preconditions. There no “if/then” clause in the promotion requirement.

Maybe HR can show Bruce his job description again?

  17. - Henry Francis - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:38 am:

    He said Korea. North?

  18. - Norseman - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:42 am:

If Rauner resigns as governor, I can go ahead and tell folks we have a governor who is interested in governing.

  19. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:43 am:

Can we build a wall while he’s gone?

  20. - Dale Cooper - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:44 am:

That’s exactly what we need. A governor that is going to go on an extended vacation over seas. It’s not like there is work to do here.

  21. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:46 am:

Didn’t he say he would take the arrows too?

I am not sure I believe him when he says something.

  22. - TinyDance(FKA Sue) - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:51 am:

=I’ll hit the road”…I’m going to travel around the country, I’m going to travel around the world…”=

One thing, for sure, Bruce - your absence in Illinois won’t make a noticeable difference.

  23. - Mama - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 11:57 am:

“I’m not going to charge taxpayers, but I’m going to travel around the country, I’m going to travel around the world.”

And if you believe IL won’t be paying for his travels, I have car for you.

  24. - Mama - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:02 pm:

== “If I can get a part of what I want here, I’ll hit the road” ==

If only what he wants didn’t include the death of state workers, social services, higher ed. and state vendors, etc. we would be more than happy to let the gov ‘hit the road’.

  25. - Jimmy H - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:09 pm:

Rauner is even holding the promotion of Illinois hostage.

  26. - Anon221 - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:10 pm:

Is he going all by himself???? Doing all the travel planning himself??? No trooper escorts??? No use of state vehicles??? If no to any one of these, he is NOT paying for travel himself. We are!!!

Walk away now, Rauner, and take up a new hobby. We cannot afford to subsidize your retirement.

  27. - Mama - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:10 pm:

“Rauner visited Pontiac this morning as they recover and begin to rebuild after the tornadoes that hit earlier this week.”

I hope he told them he will find some state or federal money to help them recover.

  28. - Triple fat - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:11 pm:

So I can hit the road extoll the virtue of balancing a budget on the backs of Union workers. I’ll settle for unionized State workers…. For now…. I’ve already seen this movie starring Scott Walker. No thank you… but feel free to take a hike.

  29. - Stuck on the 3rd Floor - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:29 pm:

This seems like another “give” that’s not really a “give”, a la tax increases. Like the tax increase, this isn’t a need or a goal specific to one side of the aisle, it’s a need for Illinois as a whole.

It should be a gift to the Dem press shop, though, hammering the angle that he should be doing this as a job duty, irrespective of budget battles.

  30. - Jimmy H - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:31 pm:

“I have magical powers and if you do as I say I’ll use them to turn Illinois into the utopia of my dreams.” -Fake Rauner

  31. - Earnest - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:36 pm:

Given that what he says rarely matches up with what he does, I’ll watch for actions instead of listening to words.

As Freddie Mercury said, “get on your bike and ride.” And don’t come back!

  33. - Huh? - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:52 pm:

“We cannot afford to subsidize your retirement.”

Unfortunately, we will be subsidizing his retirement with a State of Illinois pension. In his case, it will be enough to reduce the wine of the month tab.

  34. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 12:53 pm:

    ===with a State of Illinois pension===

    He’s not taking a pension.

  37. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 1:27 pm:

I believe this like I believe he wears an eighteen dollar watch.

  38. - AlfondoGonz - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 1:33 pm:

As he continues to pile on to the unpaid debts this State owes, he touts the money he saves the State by accepting a $1 salary, declining a pension, and declining future reimbursement for his walkabout.

Truly a hero in his own eyes.

  39. - frisbee - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 1:34 pm:

So does the campaign clunker van double as a boat or will he have the van shipped to his international destinations?

  40. - X-prof - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 1:50 pm:

And before he gets to these tasks, let’s not forget his “To Do” item from yesterday about retaining more U of I grads in IL:

“… There’s a pipeline, there’s a pipeline from Silicon Valley and from Seattle to Champaign-Urbana … it’s there. Their recruiters are there. I wanna break that pipeline. … As governor I can help drive that.”

Maybe he plans to do enough damage to the University that the west coast recruiters lose interest. Yeah, that could break the pipeline.

First Illinois! Then the World!!! Bra-ha-ha!!!

  43. - Obamas Puppy - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 3:38 pm:

Vote for gutting labor, taking a tax increase vote, and I will go away. Now if he agreed not to run for re-election then your talking.

  44. - Langhorne - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 3:40 pm:

    Hit the road. Please.

    Hit the road, jack.
Dont ya come back, no more. No more.
    Hit the road, jack.

  45. - Anon221 - Friday, Jun 24, 16 @ 3:48 pm:

Langhorne- there are 2 more, “No mores,” in that verse:) We need all we can get!
