* From the Take Charge Chicago website

Pat Quinn observed the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by urging the people of Chicago to sign and circulate the Take Charge Chicago petition to term limit the mayor and establish an elected Consumer Advocate for Chicago’s beleaguered taxpayers and consumers.

In signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the Founding Fathers risked everything to establish democracy and throw out monarchy.

The Take Charge Chicago referendums are in keeping with the “Spirit of 1776” where Chicago voters by binding referendum will tell the Mayor what the rules are, not the other way around.

The Take Charge Chicago referendums would be the first binding referendums in memory once 100,000 signatures are collected.

Using an ironing board as a portable petition-signing station at the George Washington statue on the Chicago River, Quinn and Take Charge Chicago unveiled a new campaign video called “Revolution.”

The 60-second animated film features George Washington arguing for term limits as he crosses the Delaware and John Adams being perplexed that Chicago doesn’t have a mayoral term limit.

Produced by a Columbia College videographer, “Revolution” shows that Chicago is the only city among the nation’s ten largest without mayoral term limits and that 20 Illinois communities now have it for their chief executives. To watch the video, click here.

Most of our nation’s Founders were term limits advocates in the American drive to win independence from King George III who reigned on the English throne for 59 years.

I’m sure Quinn paid the copyright fees to use those outtakes from Hollywood movies, right?

  2. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 9:54 am:

Loving God Quinn, go away and don’t come back.

  3. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 9:56 am:

Pat, your personal term limit ran out awhile back. Buh-bye.

  4. - Mike Ribson - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 9:58 am:

I couldn’t even finish watching it due to the fact it was pretty bad. I don’t understand what he is doing. I hope he isn’t trying to run for mayor!

  5. - Curious - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 9:59 am:

“What about George Washington?”(around :40 in). Good grief. This is like watching MJ play for the Wizards.

  6. - NoGifts - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:00 am:

They didn’t write the constitution with term limits. fyi.

  7. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:01 am:

Yeah the Founding Fathers loved term limits so much they didn’t include them in the original Constitution and the Presidential limit wasn’t added until 1951. They were opposed to governmental tyranny in general.

In other words, if you buy former Gov. Quinn’s version of history, you probably also buy that he’s doing this out of the goodness of his heart and not to set up another run for office.

  8. - NoGifts - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:02 am:

for president I mean. That was 1951. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

  9. - Harry - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:03 am:

Awful. I cannot imagine anyone seeing it and being persuaded. I would not be averse to term limiting the Mayor, but this ad is just horrid.

  10. - FYI - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:03 am:

From the guy who gave you Squeezey the Python, another brilliant production from a tired, worn-out gadfly who needs to call it a career. Why doesn’t he extend the term limits to aldermen? Is it because Ed Burke’s largesse once saved his skin? Real freedom fighter, this guy.

  11. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:06 am:

Can’t even give this one a pass. Many people won’t be able to keep up with the text graphics. Having to read that fast, will cause folks to actually miss the message. Trying to read with that particular musical score is distracting. The moving visual images are just as distracting.

Honestly, I can’t see a single thing that has been done well with this ad. It’s very poor.

  12. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:10 am:

Oh, here’s a fun fact: The fifer is from the Manet painting, “The Fifer”, and depicts an anonymous regimental fifer of the SPANISH army in the 1860’s, which at the time was a constitutional monarchy. Oops.

  13. - Just Me - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:14 am:

Wait a second. Unless I’m mistaken (which is possible), if Illinois Governors were limited to 2-terms, would Governor Squeezy be able to run for re-election since he served a part of Blagojevich’s term?

  14. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:17 am:

  15. - Clark - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:19 am:

So I guess alderman, state rep/senate, governor, etc don’t matter? Swing and a miss in my opinion.

Agree with the argument. But it does remind of a jibjab cartoon.

  18. - Chungas revenge - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:22 am:

This is just like Quinn’s Administration. Nice people with good intentions, and not a clue on how to bring those intentions to fruition

  19. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:24 am:

We have a chance to replace office holders every time their term runs out. It is called voting.

  20. - Phil - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:28 am:

Seems to me the Founding Fathers were against term limits, but also against the idea of career politicians. In other words, the exact opposite of Quinn’s positions on both.

  21. - Qui Tam - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:28 am:

=We have a chance to replace office holders every time their term runs out. It is called voting.=
    Agreed.

  22. - oof - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:29 am:

Just awful on so many levels. What ever happened to the video guy Quinn had on his last campaign? That young man had some talent.

  23. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:30 am:

    – Kept waiting for the Monty Python foot to come down. –

On the ad or on Quinn?

  24. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:42 am:

On a scale of 35 to 88, I give it a 37. Not much of beat and you can’t dance to it.

  25. - Steve Rogers - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:12 am:

@just me: depends on how the law would be written of course, but according to 22nd US constitutional amendment, a vice president who becomes president can serve up to 10 years if he becomes president two years into his predecessor’s term. So, IF Illinois had that same scenario, then yes, Quinn could run for another term.

  26. - No - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:13 am:

    Just no

  28. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:26 am:

Uhmm, Pat Quinn, were you aware that none of the presidents were term limited before the US Constitution was amended while Truman was president? Sort of silly to show all of the presidents who were not subject to term limits.

  29. - NoGifts - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:30 am:

So trusting in our lack of historical knowledge.

  30. - Grand Avenue - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:34 am:

Quinn won’t say this, but the strongest reason for people to support the Referendum isn’t generic good-government gobbledygook about the Founding Fathers, but rather because it’s a chance to make sure Rahm doesn’t get another term. If this effort were being led by a more outspoken group willing to advertise it as an anti-Rahm measure, I think it would have a much better chance of getting signatures and winning approval

  31. - Moist von Lipwig - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:46 am:

Cute video, lots of energy, very millennial. I don’t think us old guys are the target audience.

  32. - jack28 - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 11:48 am:

Somehow, I don’t remember Quinn saying anything against 22 years of Daley II and 40 some years of Madigan.

“Anonymous - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 10:24 am:” Not when the districts are rigged so there is no opposition. At least Emanuel had some.

  33. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 1:57 pm:

Hey, Quinn’s back to being a gadfly. It’s what he does best. And I mean that in the best, most positive way.

  34. - Excessively Rabid - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 1:58 pm:

The ad is crud. Crud is sometimes effective. Personally, I would rather see term limits like those for president for all the state executive branch offices. A nice benefit would be that Quinn would have been ineligible to run last time or ever again.

  35. - Truthteller - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 2:03 pm:

How about limiting the number of years anyone can hold elected public office to whatever number of years Quinn has already served?

  36. - Dome Gnome - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 2:27 pm:

I agree with the content, but the delivery ran interference. Somebody should go back to the drawing board on this one.

  37. - NIU Grad - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 2:53 pm:

He’s having press conferences using an ironing board…you can’t make this stuff up…

  38. - jack28 - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 3:13 pm:

Truthteller: As governor, or plus all the terms he served in various state offices (Lt. Gov.; Treas.)? The latter is not much of a limitation.

    @Grand Avenue:

Totally agree. Quinn is aiming for low hanging fruit since Rahm is so widely disliked/reviled/unpopular.

It would be a big mistake for Quinn to imagine that support for such a referendum is synonymous with support for another Quinn revival.

  41. - Reformed Public Servant - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 4:08 pm:

A for message and appeal…F for blatant copyright violations with no likely fair use defense.

  42. - chitowndrummer - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 4:13 pm:

A ridiculous video and dumb proposal from the same guy who brought you the infamous “Cutback Amendment” that eliminated cumulative voting and multi-member State House districts, thus paving the way for today’s hyper-partisanship and gridlock in Springfield. Brilliant! What these two proposals have in common: a populist appeal and offering a simplistic, structural “reform” that effectively absolves citizens of their role in voting for effective officials and against bad ones.

  43. - Obamas Puppy - Wednesday, Jul 6, 16 @ 7:35 pm:

    Go away Pat Quinn forever.

  44. - Tinsel Town - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 7:37 am:

Quinn should be in jail. Between the shoddy fiscal problems with Erwin McEwin, past Director at DCFS, Quinn used $55 million dollars earmarked to reduce Chicago crime, he funneled that money to those who would promote and forward his re-election bid.

Hundreds of people were slaughtered due to his policies, black, white and hispanic.

    Quinn simply belongs in jail.

The above photo tweet is indicative of Quinn’s support, two staffers the only individuals at a press conference. That says it all!

    Go away Quinn.

  46. - BluegrassBoy - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 8:15 am:

I’m not supportive of establishing another elected office anywhere. Just another office for people like Quinn to run for.

My real question though is who/how is paying for these ads to be produced and run on TV? Is he spending down his own war chest? I can’t imagine there are people still giving him money.
