Question of the day

Thursday, Jul 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner today in Champaign

“I underestimated how much most of the standard media just doesn’t care about this and doesn’t understand and won’t send our message out. We’ve been too slow in creating our own media channels through social media and other outlets. We’re doing that now.”

This from a guy whose Twitter feed is jam packed with pics of him at restaurants. Like just today, for instance…

* Also, “other outlets”? I wonder if he’s referring to outlets like this one.

* Also, too, getting his message out is not our job. Although as Wordslinger regularly points out in comments, the media mainly focuses on the personality conflict between Rauner and Madigan, or Rauner and Emanuel, or Rauner and whoever else he happens to be teeing off on whatever day it might be. They’re definitely getting that message out.

Anyway…

* The Question: What new and inventive ways do you think the governor will use to get his message out?

Snark is heavily encouraged, of course.

Well shoot, I dunno. If dressin’ like an extra from a Brokeback Mountain crowd shot and grabbin’ vittles and brews with the regular folk don’t work I reckon you just might have to start governin’ good.

  6. - JoanP - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 2:44 pm:

Maybe he’ll buy the Trib editorial board.

    Oh, wait . . .

  7. - Joe M - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 2:44 pm:

Giving out $100 bills to members of the general public on his speaking tours ought to help him get his message out. When Rauner gave out money to the GOP General Assembly members, that worked for him.

  8. - Steve Polite - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 2:45 pm:

    Use the teletypes.

Maybe Gov no-g can collaborate with the People’s Republic of China to hack into database information used by the legislators “he” controls and send out misleading information.

Motorcycle skid marks all over the towns he visits. The marks themselves will last for days, and the smoke created can also be effectively used for smoke signals.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 2:52 pm:

Rauner could start phony newspapers and buy up some raisin time, or just by a radio network.

Or, Rauner could have think tanks publish things, and print those things in the phony newspapers, and have radio shows on a radio network report on the rigged think tank study, reported by the phony newspapers and then have the radio shows become more commentary than news… (Sigh)… about the rugged think tank study, reported on by the phony newspapers, then covered by the Rauner-owned radio news…

    Meh.

    Never work.

The Gov. plan to turn around IL could work. Give it time. Illinois poor financial body didn’t get sick over night and it will take some time to heal. To get his massage out he needs to buy a TV station.

    If it were me?

I’d send Slip and Sue on a 6-week media tour, every tv station, every newspaper editorial board. Just let Ole Slip and Sue use her magic, and get the job done. Bruce hired her, so…

I mean, what else is she actually doing?

  29. - Norseman - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:04 pm:

Sponsor car races at local tracks.

Watch the cars go round tonight thanks to the Rauner Turnaround Agenda

Have a press conference in front of Payton Prep and use it as an example of wasteful spending practices by CPS. He could even talk about poor controls on residency requirements and the problems inherent in clout.

  36. - Arthur Andesen - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:21 pm:

Norseman beat me to the punch.

I was gonna have him buy a racetrack and “turnaround” the track so the cars always turn right. The cars would be painted with various components of the agenda instead of sponsor logos. Superstar Driver Night would be a big draw as Goldberg and the gang get behind the wheel.

“Right to Work” takes a hard hit into the infield wall! “Wasteful Spending” jumps into the lead!”

  37. - Pot calling kettle - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:22 pm:

Get a can of spray paint, scrawl “Fire Madigan” on the side of his old van, and drive it in parades.

  38. - Small town taxpayer - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:24 pm:

Make a series of infomercials like Ron Popeil and Carleton Sheets have done for any number of products. Use the time, probably in the early hours of the morning, to outline the problems with the current workman’s compensation system, the advantages of reducing spending on day care, and the need for tort reform.

  39. - Har Dee Har - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:24 pm:

Maybe if he pulled his head out of his rump, we could hear him better..

  40. - Albany Park Patriot - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:26 pm:

He has successfully won the war where people don’t know who to blame for the budget impasse that he caused. I’d say he’s up on the board.

AA, great enhancements to the Turnaround Racetrack.

  42. - BBG Watch - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:30 pm:

Ravens - they can deliver the actual message along with salient symbolism at the same time

  46. - Scamp640 - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:33 pm:

The Governor blames others for his failings. Apparently it’s the media’s fault for not buying into his failed and unproven ideas. Just a reminder, the media did report on his cuts to autism programming on autism awareness day:

    http://abc7chicago.com/society/state-funding-for-autism-program-cut-on-world-autism-day-advocate-says/612111/

  47. - Wensicia - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:37 pm:

Pay homeless people to wear sandwich boards touting his Agenda over needless social programs, like medical care and shelters for the homeless.

  48. - AlfondoGonz - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:43 pm:

    Pin it to his vest!

  49. - illini - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:45 pm:

I agree with Willy - perhaps the problem has actually been the messenger ( no comment on the message ).

Maybe Slip and Sue would be able to put a fresh face on the Agenda. Unless she has been put in charge of organizing the Governors parade at the State Fair! Guessing then she would not have time to do this.

  50. - Joe M - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:53 pm:

Governor Bruce Rauner has announced that Jason Barclay, General Counsel to the Governor, will start doing ALL of the talking for the administration. The Governor cited Mr. Barclay’s attention to truth as a reason for the move.

The Governor added, “Once the people of Illinois hear the truthful words of Mr. Barclay, they will be better able to understand the issues of my turnaround agenda. I tried, but I just can’t describe events the way Mr. Barclay does”

  51. - zatoichi - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 3:57 pm:

At a recent meeting Linda Lingle went on a long rant on what great shape the state would be in if the Turn Around Agend had just been passed. She seems to have the time to do the local town meeting circuit.

He could do a 15 minute stump speech as he intros Kiss at the State Fair. People listen.

  52. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:01 pm:

Norseman, if this catches on, we could maybe get “Capitol Fax Commenters Night” at the Speedway. I’m sure we’ve got some ace wheelmen and women among the group. I only know I ain’t drivin’ “Pension Reform.” We’ll give that to Bob.

  57. - RNUG - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:06 pm:

== Norseman, if this catches on, we could maybe get “Capitol Fax Commenters Night” at the Speedway. ==

Many years ago, I remember helping to build a “revenge” car for Sheehan’s to put one driver over the rail. Might be able to lend a bit of “technical assistance” to another effort. 😉

  58. - Cubs in '16 - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:09 pm:

Start a band with some of the Superstars and do a statewide tour. Instead of a guitar solo mid-show Rauner would do a Powerpoint presentation on the TA.

  59. - AJ_yooper - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:11 pm:

Perhaps the message is not loud and clear. Consider enrollment in the Howard Dean School of Elocution.

Or, continue usin’ that ‘collectivist’ mantra. It’s soundin’ very mainstream too.

And keep providing the evidence for the Turnaround thing. It’s really working.

Ask the Donald to help explain your huge Turn thing. It will be huge!

  60. - Norseman - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:12 pm:

AA, great plan. Willy would probably drive the Fire Madigan car. It would help him with his product line. Barclay will want to drive the On the Road to Indy Policies car. Proft will excel in the They’re all corrupt car. Kirk’s asking if he can enter the Not Trump car, but Rauner is hesitating because it doesn’t deal with TA. Of course, we all know who’s driving the Slip N’ Sue Tort Reform car. Filling up the field is Christine in the Squeeze the Beast and Sandack in the Must Sacrifice car.

  61. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:12 pm:

    - illini -, at least we’d know where Slip and Sue was, right?

    I’m “all in” on the - Norseman - / - AA - raceway extravaganza.

I think each driver should be sponsored by a plank of the Turnaround Agenda.

“The 9 car, sponsored by eliminating prevailing wage passes the 17, sponsored by ending collective bargaining… ”

It’s wordy, sure, but I think there’s 43 Rauner Agenda Items.

Maybe even call the race the “No Social Agenda 400″…

“It was a 500 but we cut 20% of the race”

  62. - Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:14 pm:

He will solicit Lin-Manuel Miranda to write the script for the off-Broadway in Chicago musical “Rauner”. . .
Ed Begley Jr. will be cast in the title role and the late Mickey Rooney will be exhumed to play the role of Mike Madigan.

  71. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:29 pm:

===He will solicit Lin-Manuel Miranda to write the script for the off-Broadway in Chicago musical “Rauner”. . .===

We’re still waiting for “Dad’s Home State” to have Turnaround Agenda sponsorship.

If that musical happens, HBO might want to buy the rights and the writers of “DHS” might write that in the storyline.

  75. - Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:33 pm:

This race idea is a good one as it parrots reality.
Only one of the 43 or so turnaround agenda items is likely to ever become law.
Let the racers decide which one it will be…

  76. - Streator Curmudgeon - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:37 pm:

Hire a band of whirling dervishes to travel from one restaurant to another promoting the Turnaround Agenda.

  77. - Anon221 - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:38 pm:

So, instead of a track race, how about a demolition derby, and the last reform plank car still runnin’ becomes law;)
    Rauner could drive his van!

  78. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:45 pm:

Jake, brilliant idea! We needed to get Oberweis in here somehow.

Race Announcers: Rich Miller, Rich Goldberg, and Steve Brown, who will contribute $5 to LSSI for every swear word going out over the PA. We’ll try to keep costs down by using old State Police cars with a fresh paint job, and using the Trashcan Van as the pace car.

  80. - Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 4:59 pm:

This is Illinois and an old-fashion Demolition Derby may be a better call.
Can’t you visualize Rauner ramming an old Lincoln repeatedly into Madigan’s Dodge Stratus or Quinn’s Squeezy-Mobile?
Host it at the State Fair and watch the tickets sell.

For starters, what Rauner should do is pour a bunch of dark money into an AstroTurf “think tank” to crank out white papers, news releases and social media echoing his message. But instead of wasting money on people with PhDs or even masters degrees in economics, education, etc…just hire an army of

  84. - Southside Markie - Thursday, Jul 7, 16 @ 5:14 pm:

  103. - Delimma - Friday, Jul 8, 16 @ 9:14 am:

I actually gave this some thought, and what I think would be the most effective method would be to actually give the news media something to report other than hyperbole and/or personality conflicts.

A non-stop, effective, accurate and mathematically correct justification for the policy positions being advocated, with effective supporters available to the media would change the news from “who would be a good prom date” to “analyzing the arguments and asking the opposition to respond.”
