I’ll believe it when I see it, Lisa

Tuesday, Jul 26, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Attorney General Lisa Madigan has teased a possible gubernatorial candidacy so many times (and often appeared to be doing so simply to raise money for her own reelection) that there’s just no way I can honestly say that this is a remotely real possibility, particularly since she announced a couple of years ago that she wouldn’t run for governor as long as her father was the House Speaker. And that guy appears to be having the time of his life so far…

She’s not going to run, and if she does while MJM is still Speaker, she’ll lose. If she’d never mentioned him as a factor in ‘14, she’d probably be able to threat the needle. But she did, so now she’s stuck.

The key to continuing a political dynasty is timing…

“It’s a tough job, but not an impossible job.” - AG Madigan.

Jeez, let’s fire up the campaign signs. That enthusiasm is contagious.

    She’s kind of a tease isn’t she?

  5. - Albany Park Patriot - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 11:10 am:

Madigan. Kennedy. Quinn. Raoul. Durbin. I’d vote for a ham sandwich instead of Rauner, except by the time he’s done destroying this state, there probably won’t be any ham left.

Also presumably a factor-does she want to take over a state with no money. Especially since she, or any other Democratic candidate, would probably have to either put through a huge income tax increase upon taking office, or make the big cuts that even the Republicans seem unwilling to make. Illinois residents’ collective tax burden is already among the highest in the nation, especially for middle and lower income residents. Do the Democrats really want to be the ones who add to that burden. No, they’d rather Rauner did it and then they can kick him out while enjoying the flow of new cash. So far, it’s not clear they can engineer this though.

Much of Lisa Madigan’s legacy may depend on the outcome of the Duckworth v. Kirk race. If Kirk wins, Madigan is the one who spurned President Obama and handed an easily winnable senate seat to the GOP. If Duckworth wins, the effect will have been negligible because of how much GOP intransigence there was during the Obama administration and the GOP would have still controlled the senate.

  8. - RNUG - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 11:15 am:

    Here’s a possible scenario:

Rauner and MJM, against their will, end up raising taxes, including doing a property tax reduction for income tax increase, and “solve” the pension payments by resetting the Edgar Ramp to longer and lower. Rauner also gets his Work Comp reform and some state pay raise limits.

Since Governors Own, Rauner gets most the blame for all of this with just a bit of praise. Democrats will be firmly united against him.

MJM says his work is done and announced he won’t run in 2018.

IF, and only IF, all that happens, then the road is clear for Lisa in 2018. Otherwise she will just run for re-election.

Can’t we be done with anyone named Madigan? Please.

  10. - phocion - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 11:21 am:

Just as the Speaker stymies her chances to become Governor, his existence will prevent Lisa from getting appointed as US Attorney General or a spot on the US Supreme Court. I’m not sure what “anything” there is that she is talking about not ruling out.

  11. - cdog - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 11:35 am:

I would propose that L. Madigan is not the same political animal her father is, in the best ways possible.

From my vantage point, the AG office has been well run under her administration. I used the consumer complaint division a few years ago to whack a regional air carrier whose website did not perform for an advertised function. I was seriously impressed when I got a call from a VP in LasVegas at Corp headquarters and an apology and a quick resolution.

(Maybe her dad will play the Boehner/Sandack-card and give her a chance to rebuild the family name after Rauner spends several million with his anti-Madigan messaging. One never knows…)

  12. - Ron - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 12:12 pm:

If Lisa Madigan as Governor is the way to rid this state of the corrupt, catastrophe known as Mike Madigan, I’m for it.

  13. - burbanite - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 12:44 pm:

What, no tweet of MJM saying he talked to her about it?

  14. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 2:07 pm:

“Trump University is nothing but a shady operation that stole money from the American people”

You could substitute “Chicago State” for “Trump” “the people of Illinois” for “the American people” and the tweet would be equally true, but I doubt the AG would want to engage in that discussion.

  15. - burbanite - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 5:44 pm:

Chicago State is actually accredited and when you are done you get a degree and it doesn’t cost 35 g. Trump University is not a University at all.

  16. - cannon649 - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 7:43 pm:

    Lisa will not run.

She have to deal with her father’s miss - never
