Rauner on ILGOP hits: “This is the job we’ve chosen”

Monday, Dec 5, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner was asked today about his recent calls to Democrats to tone down their rhetoric. But what about the BossMadigan.com site, which is run by the Illinois GOP that’s almost totally funded by the governor? Why not give that a rest for a while?

His response…

This is the job we’ve chosen. We’re in a field where politics is always going on. Partisan stuff. That’s on the side. We can keep that out. That’s not in the room when we’re negotiating. That’s its own process. I have nothing to do with it. I don’t spend my time thinking about it or focusing on it. We ought to be mature enough, thoughtful enough that we can put politics aside. Politics are always going on. That’s the world we live in. We should focus in the room on getting a compromise, doing the right thing for the long term for the people of Illinois… The political stuff, the partisan stuff, ignore it. That shouldn’t matter. That should not get in the way.

I have never heard someone speak out of both sides of their mouth as much as our governor. It’s disturbing and embarrassing.

“I have nothing to do with it.”

Coming soon to a Biss ad near you, with a soundtrack of cash registers.

    Wow… that’s worse than being on Kohl’s email list….

Ladies answer gentlemen, Governor Hyman Roth.

  7. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

If he can separate those two, he should have no problem separating the Turnaround Agenda from the budget. /s

  8. - Touré's Latte - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

When the ILGA is in session and the bills are flying, how many of these kinds of emails do you get each day? Hundreds? Thousands?

    Good grief!

  9. - Anon221 - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

Really??? Spin factor 10! Hey, I’ll hit you in the hall but not the classroom- that’s OK, right ole buddy???

  10. - Formerpol - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:07 pm:

And just what is untoward about those emails listed? They look pretty mild to me.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:08 pm:

Rauner is Hyman Roth? Oh boy.

“This (cough) is the job (cough) we’ve chosen…”

Roth loses to Michael, he may way to remember that.

===The political stuff, the partisan stuff, ignore it. That shouldn’t matter. That should not get in the way.===

… says the man who “may” have been involved in financing a documentary..,

… says the man who spent $2 million during session to help his own numbers AND ran ridiculous Ads against Madigan…

… says the man who held two caucuses hostage, not as partners with $20 million.

Rauner may be Hyman Roth, but Johnny Ola and Fredo trying to take Michael out only led to Roth losing… by being out-maneuvered… at a governmental hearing.

“Hail Mary, full of Grace… “

  12. - walker - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:08 pm:

This open attack messages and campaigning was not for all 24-months of a legislator’s term, until 2016. Never saw the Dems do it at the legislative level. It is a Rauner innovation.

  13. - Joe Schmoe - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:09 pm:

For years the Dem hit squads pretty much used this same tactic. What’s so different now?

  14. - 47th Ward - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:13 pm:

    ===Rauner is Hyman Roth?===

And Richard Goldberg is Johnny Ola.

  15. - Ahoy! - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:15 pm:

Madigan is not going to give it a rest so why would Rauner? We’re asking one person to do something the other side is not going to do, which is silly, reporters should know better.

  16. - ILGOV2018 - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:16 pm:

It’s like Rauner is living in the Bizzaro world!

The party that I bought is going to bash my opponents and especially Speaker Madigan, but they should ignore it when we sit down at the leaders meeting.

Give me a break! Are you kidding me?

  17. - John - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:16 pm:

GOP freaked out when Hillary stated she had both a public and private policy.

Rauner loves saying in public one thing and in private doing another.

Hopefully people start calling him out on it.

  18. - wordslinger - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:17 pm:

    Channeling Hyman Roth?

“Your father did business with Hyman Roth, your father respected Hyman Roth, but your father never trusted Hyman Roth.”

  19. - Rabid - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:20 pm:

Budget without reform is hypothetically partisan

  20. - Honeybear - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:20 pm:

Governor Rauner and his administration are so perfidious.

  21. - RNUG - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:22 pm:

(with apologies in advance to Rich, but it needs to be said bluntly)

== That’s not in the room when we’re negotiating. ==

    The hell it’s not.

  22. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:23 pm:

How fun it would be to spend $45 million a year on something you don’t think about.

  23. - Huh? - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:26 pm:

Do as I say, not as I do.

It is OK for 1.4% to continually beat up the Democratic party, but Madigan has to be “mature” and refrain from bad mouthing anyone.

And one wonders how anybody will ever come up with a budget for Illinois.

  24. - northsider (the original) - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:27 pm:

“We have now what we have always needed, real partnership with the government.”

  25. - Thoughts Matter - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:28 pm:

Governor- pot calling the kettle black. You can’t ask other people to stop doing what you won’t stop doing. Politics and partisan can go on without the stuff you and yours have done the last two years. It’s like a non-violent version of the Hatfield-McCoys.

  26. - JS Mill - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:29 pm:

=For years the Dem hit squads pretty much used this same tactic. What’s so different now? =

Nothing. The ILGOP didn’t keep it out of the room.

The governor is hysterical, I mean the stones and the arrogance it takes to say some of this stuff is pure Ivy league Paternalism.

  27. - Illinois O'Malley - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:29 pm:

The attacks gives Tronc and Katrina something to write about instead of the lack of Rauner to propose a balanced budget.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:32 pm:

    - RNUG - is all over it.

    To the Post,

    HBO - “Dad’s Home State”, Season 2, Episode 58

Bruce locks himself in a room watching “Godfather II” 18 hours straight, tries to figure out where Hyman Roth lost. Diana plans for December holiday trip, calls to see if Work needs more money donated before she goes. Diana’s State Employee makes sure Staff holiday gifts are bought and distributed. Lance tweets pictures of Snow covered Marijuana plants to Rep. Lang, “ck” sends an email on how great AFSCME has had it under Bruce. Goldberg writes a letter to Francis Ford Coppola. Comedy, 71 minutes.

  29. - Huh? - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:32 pm:

“My strong recommendation is that we tone down the rhetoric … Heated rhetoric doesn’t help. Getting emotional doesn’t help. Pointing fingers doesn’t help. Let’s stay mature. Let’s stay thoughtful. Let’s stay positive.”

How does this recent 1.4% quote mesh with the above quotes? What changed in the last day or so?

How could 1.4% whipsaw so fast from “tone it down” to “alls fair in war, and this is war”.

How does 1.4% hold these 2 mutually opposing concepts in his head?

  30. - DuPage Bard - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:34 pm:

The Dems better figure out their messaging soon.
Rauner bails out power companies and suppresses voter rights.
Hope no people of color thought they really mattered in this mans Illinois.
Now tie that into Union hatred you have a recipe for 18 success.
    See was that so difficult?

    It’s called IOKIFYAAR

  32. - IllinoisBoi - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:39 pm:

“I have nothing to do with it.”

And that, my friends, is Rauner’s core philosophy for governing.

  33. - Henry Francis - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 3:46 pm:

    ===Rauner is Hyman Roth?===

And Richard Goldberg is Johnny Ola.

    Would that make Dunkin Fredo?

He pulled this stuff during the campaign about his private sector track record.

Not a whole lot of respect for the intelligence of the citizenry.

Does the term ‘gobbledegook’ mean anything in this era?

  38. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:30 pm:

I am beginning to think it will take a Federal lawsuit like the one that invalidated the partisan maps in Wisconsin to break the impasse.

That would at least be one item off the Turnaround agenda.

For the first time in 12 years there is divided government in Springfield but the Speaker refuses to accept reality. You can’t say no to everything for the next two years like he has done for the past two years.

  39. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:32 pm:

    ===Speaker refuses to accept reality.===

When Rauner can count to 60 and 30, get back to everyone, lol

  40. - wordslinger - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:40 pm:

–I am beginning to think it will take a Federal lawsuit like the one that invalidated the partisan maps in Wisconsin to break the impasse.–

Yeah, well, the GOP did that in 2011. Two suits, one for the GA districts and one for the Congressional districts. They got tossed.

Filing is kind of an automatic thing. Seriously, did you think that was a new idea?

  41. - Nick Name - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:43 pm:

The man leaves me speechless. Just, speechless.

  42. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:46 pm:

Rauner will continue to “not care” until Comptroller Mendoza…

Let’s just see how far Rauner is willing to move from Sgt. Schultz to Hyman Roth.

The two characters have ruined so much, why would Rauner be responsible now?

  43. - State Worker THX 1138 - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:53 pm:

Ugh. Two faced Mr. Moneybags strikes again…

  44. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 4:56 pm:

Yes the Feds overturning maps is a big deal.

Hard to believe the Maps in Wisconsin could be more unconstitutional than the Illinois maps

    Winners play hard.

  46. - Chicago 20 - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 5:13 pm:

So where is the follow up rebuttal from the reporter(s)?

    Where is the balanced reporting?

We have constant fake news stories and also false biased information reported in the mainstream media with no repercussions whatsoever.

The media is supposed to serve the public not the elite.

  47. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 6:01 pm:

    ===Winners play hard.===

… they just don’t lie about their intent.

Rauner fails because Rauner has no respect for anyone. So Illinois loses.

  48. - peon - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 6:03 pm:

This answer is an indictment of journalism and reporting in Illinois (present site excluded). How can anyone who spent $42M on an election feel safe saying this ?

  49. - Anonin' - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 6:06 pm:

    Lookin’ like Blagoof to us

  50. - Rich Miller - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 6:10 pm:

Anonin’ I think you lost an “n” somewhere. But, yeah, he said the same during a state of the state or budget address.

  51. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 6:40 pm:

Rauner has been running the Blago playbook with the money to finally make it real.

Rod wasn’t scary, Rod was dangerous.

Rauner isn’t dangerous, Rauner is reckless.

And being reckless, has ruined this state, and we all need to ignore the recklessness.

  52. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Dec 5, 16 @ 7:01 pm:

Rich maybe he’s droppin’ an “n” now since the dropped “g” is pretty well reserved for the Gov.

  55. - Chucktownian - Tuesday, Dec 6, 16 @ 10:05 am:

Time for Mendoza to shut it down. Then we’ll get this straightened out real quick.

  56. - Angry Chicagoan - Tuesday, Dec 6, 16 @ 12:05 pm:

@ Lucky PIerre, the Illinois maps distributed about 60 percent of the seats to the Democrats on about 60 percent of the vote. The Wisconsin maps distributed about 35 percent of the seats to the Democrats on 55 percent of the vote.
