What’s with the secrecy?

Monday, Feb 27, 2017

* Tribune

Gov. Bruce Rauner let it slip that he’s planning to meet with Grammy winner Chance the Rapper this week, though his office declined to say when or where.

Rauner mentioned the planned meeting in passing at a Black History Month event at the Thompson Center on Friday. He was praising Dorothy Jean Tillman, a theater and performance artist who was given a young achievement award for her work as a children’s book author and ensemble member at the Harold Washington Cultural Center.

“I tell you, Dorothy Jean Tillman, this young lady, 10 years old, extraordinary talent. What an inspiration she is. I look forward to seeing her next week,” Rauner said. “She’s going to come when I’m getting together with Chance the Rapper, I think the middle of next week.” […]

Asked when and where the meeting will take place, the administration emailed back a short statement: “On background, the Governor will be meeting privately with Chance next week to discuss important issues affecting our state.”

* From this morning…

    Chance is no “ck”

Chance has “no chance” becoming a Superstar.

  4. - Echo The Bunnyman - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

Everything is a secret. Except offering a budget with billions in deficit.Maybe the Gov should meet with the leaders instead. Unless he is getting “rap”advice….

  5. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

Can’t wait to see the ensemble Rauner dons for this meeting.

  6. - DuPage Bard - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:26 pm:

The Gov’s office will try to downplay the meeting saying- good ideas were exchanged happy to have open dialogue blah blah.
Chance will say Gov committed to XYZ now I’m going to watch if he follows.
Difference between being based in politics and being famous.

  7. - A Jack - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:33 pm:

Maybe they are heading out for a secret ski trip.

  8. - Anon - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:33 pm:

I’m pretty sure the meeting will be record by Chance and made available to the public regardless of the Governor’s position on the matter.

  9. - Huh? - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:33 pm:

What’s with the secrecy? 1.4% doesn’t want anybody to know that he is going to slobber all over himself in adoration when he meets with a rap star.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:38 pm:

    HBO - “Dad’s Home State” - Season 3, Episode 11

Bruce looks for a costume to meet award winning musician, decides even he can’t pull off that costume. Diana starts tweeting on Bruce’s birthday, is told about the Twitter handle by her State Employee. Diana’s State Employee refuses to give the Diana’s Twitter password to both Bruce and Diana. Lance tweets pictures of Bruce skiing in Utah to Rep. Lang, “ck” uses the Rauner Word Jumble to “rhyme” a press release for Bruce and the award winning musician. Goldberg writes a letter to the Grammys. Special “secret” guest star. Comedy, 71 minutes.

Love the low-key power move saying “I’m eager to hear his ideas” like their roles are reversed.

  12. - Rogue Roni - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:40 pm:

Secrecy is the name of the game with this administration. The real story would be a hint of transparency.

  13. - Henry Francis - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:41 pm:

Cubs in ‘16 - not just the costume, but the phony dialect as well.

  14. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:49 pm:

No big deal. Chance gets to hear the (nothing new news) in person.

  15. - LizPhairTax - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:52 pm:

    @Cubs in ‘16

Fingers crossed for a classic Alderman Dorothy Tillman hat, but will settle for whatever he pulls together

  16. - JohnnyPyleDriver - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:52 pm:

Maybe to keep the supporters on either side from turning negative? I dunno just a guess.

Chance’s dad is Ken Bennett, who used to be some sort of deputy or assistant to Rahm Emmanuel. Not sure how, but perhaps that has something to do with it?

  17. - JohnnyPyleDriver - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 2:54 pm:

Wore my feelings on my sleeveless
My weed seedless, my trees leafless
I miss my diagonal grilled cheeses
And back when Mike Jackson was still Jesus
Before I believed in not believing in
Yeah, I inhaled, who believed in me not breathing in
Cigarette stained smile all covered in sin
My big homie died young; just turned older than him
I seen it happen, I seen it happen, I see it always
He still be screaming, I see his demons in empty hallways
I trip to make the fall shorter
Fall quarter was just a tall order
And I’m hungry, I’m just not that thirsty
As of late, all my verses seem not so verse-y
And all my words just mean controversy
Took the team up off my back, like “That’s not your jersey?”
Stressin’, pullin’ my hair out, hoping I don’t get picked
All this medicine in me hoping I don’t get sick
Making all of this money hoping I don’t get rich

Each is probably leery of being used as a prop by the other.

  21. - sal-says - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 3:16 pm:

Dearest Sorta-Gov Raunner: “On background, the Governor will be meeting with GA leadership next week to discuss important issues affecting our state.” Like after 3 years, presenting YOUR Constitutionally mandated BALANCED BUDGET.

There…fixed it for ya. Now DoYourJob!

  22. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 3:18 pm:

Well if they publicize the time and location, they both might get mobbed — albeit for different reasons.

  23. - Living it daily - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 3:28 pm:

-sal-says is right. instead of acting like he is hip, and has mainstream ideas> get back to Getting the Academy award for portraying a Elected Official doing his appointed job. Its not like the rapper is going to go to the Rep. side. for any ideas the Gov. needs he has the legislature to pound all day and night. squeeze the beast.

  24. - Precinct Captain - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 3:40 pm:

Will this be redacted on his calendar?

  25. - wordslinger - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 3:55 pm:

–Apparently, it’s not “that” secret, is it? lol –

So when and where is it, Robin Leach? Did the Kennedy’s let it slip at one of those touch football games up at Hyannis Port, where you talk about what they’re all “bred for?”

My guess is the governor just likes to limit and control all appearances because he’s not very good at thinkin’ and speakin’ on his feet.

  26. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 4:37 pm:

Candidate Rauner-”I’m gonna be the most transparent governor Illinois has ever seen!”

Ahh, the good ol’ days of campaigning.

  27. - @MisterJayEm - Monday, Feb 27, 17 @ 5:16 pm:

“I’m eager to hear his ideas.”

Oh, to once again be young and idealistic enough to believe Bruce Rauner might show up with ideas.

    Well, isn’t that special.

Bruce won’t meet with the President, as his ego, can’t take the tongue lashing he will receive.

He won’t meet with ASFCME, but sure can meet with a rapper.

    What?
