Rauner says terror attack here “just a matter of time” so “we’ve got to be ready”

Thursday, Mar 23, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* CBS 2

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said Wednesday that an attack by terrorists in the state is “just a matter of time.”

Rauner made his remarks a few hours after the rampage outside Parliament in London, which killed four and injured nearly two dozen. British authorities believe that attack was an act of terrorism.

“My view? It’s just a matter of time,” Rauner said at a meeting of the Illinois Terror Task Force in Springfield. “There’s a lot of bad people around. And we’ve got to be ready. And that’s what you guys do, and I want to say, thank you.” […]

Past plots involving Chicago include the aborted attack on the Willis Tower; the explosive copier cartridges destined for Chicago but intercepted in Yemen; and the underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who flew to Detroit on Christmas 2009, because airfares to Chicago were too high.

“There is no domestic correlation or link to Chicago as of yet but we are continuing to monitor the situation,” Chicago Police Department.

“No credible threats on the local level,” Cook County Homeland Security.

“FBI Chicago has no credible threats to the Chicago area at this time. We continue to work with our local, state, and Federal partners to address any potential, credible threat to the area.”

“Cook County Courthouses were placed on heightened security today and will remain in place for the foreseeable future,” Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Be vigilant, be safe.

Rauner and his administration ought to look at the damage they are doing daily to the State and it’s populace, rather than some abstract threat.

What’s going on daily is the real danger.

==and the underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who flew to Detroit on Christmas 2009, because airfares to Chicago were too high==

It looks like we can keep Illinois safe through higher airport taxes.

  4. - Spliff - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:27 am:

Most terror attacks in this country are carried out by angry/crazy white men with guns so we are at risk in Illinois …

“There’s a lot of bad people around. And we’ve got to be ready.”

Didn’t Rauner graduate from Dartmouth? Trump graduated from Wharton?

Do these gentlemen speak like this to curry some sort of favor among the uneducated or is this how they actually speak?

  6. - Jocko - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:31 am:

If Bruce isn’t careful, his effort at cratering Illinois’s economy might fall under category of domestic terrorism.

  7. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:34 am:

No logical person buries their head in the sand and pretends this only happens somewhere else and no one will ever be affected here. That being said, living life to our fullest capability and leaving the authorities in charge of monitoring our threats is what we can and should do.

  8. - Ill a noyed - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:35 am:

I find that the Rep. Party is doing more to hurt America than any other org. in the world. Trumpcare and Rauner’s destruction of social services and higher edu are just two of the latest examples.

  9. - Honeybear - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:37 am:

Here we go. Republicans love them some fear. Activates the crap out of them. Isis, viruses, BLM riots, and soon to be tried, union thugs. We’re not going to give him the satisfaction.

This is just juicing up the base.

  10. - wordslinger - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:39 am:

    Matter of time?

What the heck does he think is going on in Austin, West Garfield Park, Lawndale, Englewood, East St. Louis, Harvey, etc?

Time is now, governor. They’re citizens too and the terror theyre experiencing deserves some attention from the chief executive of the state.

  11. - Streator Curmudgeon - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:40 am:

Not an unreasonable statement by Rauner.

Fight clean and protect yourself at all times.

  12. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:44 am:

You are still more likely to be killed in a car accident or from heart disease than from terrorism.

  13. - Swift - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:45 am:

“we’ve got to be ready”, why are we ready for a rare terrorist attack but can’t seem to deal with gun violence in Chicago? The Governor seems to always receive a pass on Chicago violence. I don’t know if it is a race thing, though I suspect it is, but something happens half a world away and there are more sheriffs at the courthouse, yet the killed and injured in London is the same as a normal weekend in Chicago.

In a related story Isis has claimed responsibility for rauner and apparently the Russians have hacked my voice recognition software but what else is new?

  18. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:57 am:

I’m not discounting by any means the true threat of terrorist attack from ‘outside’ - but if you live in a dangerous neighborhood, you try your best to live with the terror that could cut you down at any time. That’s pervasive, lingering terror versus an event. There’s more to be gained by acting as protector of ‘the people’ as a high level politician, than seriously trying to reduce the everyday terrorism noted above.

  19. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:58 am:

It’s rare that I agree with Bruce on something. In fact, I can only think of one previous occasion, but he’s right on this one.

  20. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 10:59 am:

Now I get it, Rauner’s plan to prevent attacks on college campuses is to eliminate the colleges.
    Brilliant counter-terrorism move.
We’ve been looking at this wrong all along.

  21. - Gruntled University Employee - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 11:06 am:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you’re more afraid of a Terrorist Attack than a heart attack…You’ve been duped.

  22. - John Galt - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 11:22 am:

Kudos to Richard M. Daley for bulldozing Miegs Field since its existence was clearly a terrorist threat to downtown Chicago.

It is disturbing and odd that with the violent crime rate in Chicago—–that everyone who doesn’t live in Illinois keeps asking me about with very wide eyes (how can you live there?)—
how does one explain the lack of concern and action by our leaders? Then again, there seems to be a lack of concern and action about just about everything in this state. As I hear from ones who live in other states, “Our people in this state would never put up with that”

  25. - Last Bull Moose - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 11:49 am:

Fear comes partly from a lack of control. I can shift the odds on a heart attack. I cut the odds on getting shot by choosing my hunting partners.

When I watched the Twin Towers burn across Long Island Sound, there was no control.

  26. - jon r - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 11:52 am:

Shooting in WISCONSIN kills just as many ,barely any mention on news. I more afraid of some guy shooting up a work place than terrorism

  27. - A-nonny-nonny - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 11:53 am:

Does that mean that the bioterrorism response equipment st DPH can finally be fixed?

  28. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 12:07 pm:

With Rauner as governor, how could we tell?

this is a story about domestic terrorism. Silence on domestic terrorism from Trump. let’s not make that mistake in our state.

ISIS isn’t coming to CHIRAQ!!!! they might get shot!

  31. - James Knell - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

They are shooting a movie at UIC called “Captive State”… perfect for Illinois, huh? I am WAY more worried about n the state budget than ISIS.

  32. - a mom - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 5:21 pm:

If an attack occurred today, they’d pass that $25M emergency security bill before tomorrow. So if it’s just a matter of time, why wait? Act now and prevent.

  33. - wordslinger - Thursday, Mar 23, 17 @ 7:11 pm:

Some nut just killed a cop and three others in Wausua.

Perhaps we should put in some extreme vetting and suspend any travel by Cheeseheads until we can figure out what’s going on up there.

Because that Cheesehead terrorist just left a bigger body count than any traveler from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, or any refugee from anywhere ever has here, combined.

History will show this generation of Americans refugee ban to be the equivalent of turning back the Jews of the SS St. Louis to the Nazi death camps, and the forcing of the Nisei into concentration camps.

That doesn’t make American great again to this first-generation Yankee.
