Question of the day

Friday, Mar 24, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Dan Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC is spending $141,000 on cable TV ads blasting Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin. Here’s the 30-second version of the ad

* The Question: Your rating of the ad?

  1. - A guy - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

It starts out effective and then takes a turn to “over the top” Local Mayors are generally pretty well known and generally well liked in a community. This ad puts too much icing on the cake.
In the realm of Pass/Fail, it’s right on the line. I don’t do the letter grades, but if I did this would be closer to an F than a D+.

  2. - VanillaMan - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

That’s an ad from a guy who owes every client he works with, $150,000 a year!

  3. - Negative ads everyone hates but they work - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

    Facts?
We don’t need no stinking facts

Pretty sure property tax increase was school related

But people will hear it enough to believe it.

But I must have missed the madigan connection in it

  4. - wordslinger - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:16 pm:

Step up in class for Proft.

How did they land these guys to produce it?

  5. - Stan - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

For people who are familiar with the race this ad is effective. The mayor is catching a lot of heat in Orland Park. This is a big issue. This ad will Do the job intended.

  6. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:40 pm:

Should have pointed out what the huge salary increase will mean over the life of his pension that will be picked up by the state and not Orland Park

  7. - Southwest Suburbanite - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:44 pm:

Stan’s right…this is a big issue. McLaughlin is ditching the city manager form of government and making himself the full time mayor for mucho bucks — just in time to spike his pension.

Interesting that Proft is involved. I don’t think this is a re-run of the Chapa LaVia take down. McLaughlin can’t be easily connected to Madigan. In fact, he’s feuded with the Speaker frequently.

McLaughlin should win, regardless of this issue and ad.

  8. - Southwest Suburbanite - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:46 pm:

    - Lucky Pierre -

You’re right, the piece should be more focused on that. Maybe that’ll be ad #2?

  9. - Ward Heeler - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:49 pm:

OMG! Is he still in office? I remember when he tried to run statewide years ago.

  10. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:53 pm:

After 20 years, he would have collected about $2.6 million in pension payments, from the higher salary, compared with roughly $770,000 as calculated under the current salary.

For a few extra years work at the higher salary

That is the message. Profit failed to tie this into the biggest problem this state has and only one party is trying to fix it

Anyone still think we don’t need pension reform in this state?

  11. - wordslinger - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:54 pm:

–Should have pointed out what the huge salary increase will mean over the life of his pension that will be picked up by the state and not Orland Park–

Except for the part about the state picking it up being untrue, since its an IMRF pension.

Not that untruth is necessarily a deal-breaker for either Proft or you.

  12. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:55 pm:

C, but the issues are an albatross for McLaughlin. There is a good argument he has been there long enough (20 years or so?) and run up some gigantic debts for municipal projects. The schools are in good shape, though the high schools there are in a district that covers a number of municipalities.

  13. - wordslinger - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:58 pm:

It’s an IMRF pension. That state doesn’t pick it up, despite what the delusional pension expert here is saying.

  14. - Inspector Gadget - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 3:59 pm:

The ad is ok. I’m sure Proft has more coming they just reported a 100k media by for Pekau who is running against McLaughlin. Wouldn’t be surprised if Rauner dosen’t also get involved. The pay raise and pension boost is right up his agenda. Orland township is Republican and Trump won there so Rauner might play good in that race.

  15. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:02 pm:

    -Orland township is Republican-

    But its leadership isn’t.

  16. - Orland Parker - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:04 pm:

He ran against JBT for Treasurer years ago. He ran a dirty negative campaign also. For that reason also I hope he loses.

  17. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:06 pm:

    https://www.illinoispolicy.org/5-facts-show-imrf-is-just-as-unsustainable-as-every-other-illinois-pension-fund/

Do you defend the pension chicanery Mc Laughlin is pulling Wordslinger?

  18. - Inspector Gadget - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:17 pm:

-Orland Parker- Also running on same ticket with McLaughlin is the former GOP committeeman from Orland Township Jim Dodge, whom by coincidence also ran for office against JBT. He voted for the raise and pension boost. Nothing like those good old hard R’s being all for pension reform huh!!

  19. - wordslinger - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:21 pm:

    LOL, LP, dazzling pivot.

“Chicanery” is a synonym for “deceit,” as in your lame attempt at it in claiming that the state would pick up his pension costs.

I notice you’re not defending that.

As to the mayor, I’ll leave it to the voters in Orland Park as it’s no skin off my nose.

  20. - ILGOV2018 - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:27 pm:

It happened in the local Berwyn Democratic primary. Even though Proft wasn’t involved directly, they used his tactics to try and unseat the popular incumbent Mayor. People who were tied to Proft in the past were instrumental in the opposition’s campaign. All you have to do is imply (actually lie) and people will believe it because they are too lazy to look up the facts.

  21. - Roman - Friday, Mar 24, 17 @ 4:37 pm:

I’m too distracted by the announcer’s voice to evaluate….that’s Gene Honda, PA voice of the Sox and Hawks. Waiting for him to say: “Chicago goal scored by…..”
