Pawar says he’s raised $325K

Tuesday, Apr 4, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Pawar has already reported $235K in contributions of $1,000 and more, so this appears to show he raised close to $100K in small contributions…

The Ameya Pawar for Governor campaign today announced that more than 1,200 people from across the state donated more than $325,000 and joined the grassroots movement to fight for a New Deal for Illinois. Ameya Pawar, 47th Ward alderman and Democratic candidate for governor issued the following statement:

“These numbers are just one more sign that people are sick and tired of Donald Trump and Bruce Rauner’s agenda and are responding positively to our concrete plans to create jobs, fairly fund our schools, and bring sanity back to the Governor’s office. I knew this race wouldn’t be easy, but I believed in the power of everyday people rising up to demand accountability from our government.

“I’m not a billionaire, and I didn’t start with a million dollar war chest. I don’t have the benefit of having led SuperPACs while entrenched in Springfield politics. But the groundswell of support as we visit people across the state has made it clear that Illinois families are hungry to put a progressive fighter in the Governor’s office.”

Interesting little shot at Daniel Biss for that LIFT PAC of his. Will the two of them go after each other to prove that they’re the “real” progressives in the race? Could be.

Rich, I think your headline is flipped. He raised $235k not 325k.

Anon, he raised 325k, but 235k was in large contris.

    Got it. Thanks for clarifying.

Biss is running on not being a millionaire, which while I get it, I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t say that fact surprised me.

Pawar implies that he is millionaire by not saying it. “I’m not a billionaire, and I didn’t start with a million dollar war chest.” While a creative turn of phrase and interesting little shot, it implies to me that he is a millionaire.

If being a millionaire really is a ding to being the “real” progressive in the race (I’m still struggling with that), then this slip is something not to ignore.

    Take it easy.

Man, some of y’all today are wrapped tightly in the tinfoil.

Pawar got $25 from me. And, of note, I’ll announce that that is the first time I’ve ever donated to a political candidate. More to come, once I make some money.

Yea, that was a nasty shot by Pawar. Ya got this, and the Kennedy shots. And the Biss shots. Guys, it’s a long campaign and you’re running against Rauner. Try and behave.

It’s election day! Nerves are high. Apologies…

Anyone who wants to be in this game needs to write a $60 million check.

  11. - A Lady - Tuesday, Apr 4, 17 @ 6:32 pm:

Pawar isn’t a millionaire. He’s collects the lowest amount paid as an Alderman in Chicago by choice. He didn’t start with $1 million like Biss nor did he self-fund like Kennedy or Rauner. Or soon-to-be Pritzker. He has my vote and I will be contributing as a volunteer.

I think some of the buzz around which Dem candidate is the most progressive, most outsider, and least machine misses the mark on the key question. Who is the best person to fix our state’s problems? Obviously beating Rauner is part of that, but who has the best track record of success in delivering on progressive policies and has the best chance of success in Springfield? Some of these other litmus tests are unhelpful. To Pawar’s dig on Biss, I think that’s not a good look and he should tread carefully lest folks start reminding his younger supporters how aligned Pawar was with Mayor Emanuel for so many years…resulting in him actually leaving the Progressive Caucus. Eyes on the prize. Focus on Rauner.
