Question of the day

Thursday, Apr 6, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Paul Sassone at Pioneer Press is not a fan of Gov. Rauner’s new TV ads

The entire tone of these Fix Illinois commercials seems meant to create the impression that Rauner is a newcomer to Illinois’ problems instead of one of the major problem creators for the last couple of years.

He’s not some new guy with great, new solutions running for office. He is the hard-line governor of the state that won’t pass a budget.

So, these dress-up commercials seem more that a bit disingenuous.

Maybe the Democrats should counter the governor’s commercials with commercials of their own.

Let’s see, Rauner dressed up as Norm the carpenter from “This Old House” (minus the protuberant stomach possessed by all real carpenters).

Who could Madigan dress up as for his TV commercial?

* The Question: Who could Madigan dress up as for his own TV commercial? Explain.

The phoniness of Rauner’s ads are the point that Rauner is trying to portray that the last 2 years and the last 3 budgets didn’t exist.

… that all the damage that’s occurred never happened…

… that vetoes and stopgaps, ultimatums and trench warfare isn’t occurring.

I said since jump street, looking like you’re not actually the governor now is even more phony than the lack of accomplishments being blamed on Madigan and Democrats.

No one is calling Rauner out, politically.

    Not. A. Peep.

  2. - Streator Curmudgeon - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 12:19 pm:

Madigan could dress up as an old West sleight of hand artist at a folding table.

“Put you bet down! Is the Pension Payments Pea under the left shell, the right shell, or the center shell?

“It should have been paid when it was due, where it went is anybody’s clue!”

Can DEMS escape the vertical integration of Rauners media control OW? The only way my local Labor folks get something out is through social media. Almost all the local papers are controlled. The last time I saw something favorable for labor was from a St. Louis TV station after a one of our local Rally’s.

For example. Last night we had around 120 union folks and a some local citizens and environmentalists protesting Rauner at the Republican Lincoln dinner. This is all we got. Look at the tone of it.
    http://altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=240860#.WOZ4r4grLcs

So if social media is just about it for getting the word of dissent out. I have to wonder how DEMS can be more successful. I’m not challenging you at all OW. I’m learning by your response AND frustrated that no matter what my local folks do it seems we can’t get a foothold on mass media. It’s only social media where we do well right now.

Madigan is your old neighbor who sits on the porch and keeps to himself until your kid tosses his football into Madigan’s yard.

But he doesn’t stand up and shout “get off my lawn” or shake his fist at the kids.

    He just stares at them.

Then the legend among the neighborhood kids begins to spread.

And pretty soon everyone is afraid of old man Madigan, but it’s all a legend. He never actually did anything.

  7. - @misterjayem - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 12:30 pm:

“Who could Madigan dress up as for his own TV commercial?”

Chance the Rapper seems rather popular these days — and MC MJM droppin’ science would be only slightly more absurd than Bruce the Blue-Collar Billionaire droppin’ Gs.

  29. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 2:39 pm:

Mike Madigan doesn’t dress up in costumes. People dress up as him.

There once was a street named for Madigan, but the name was changed for public safety because nobody crosses Mike Madigan and lives.

Mike Madigan has a diary. It’s called the Illinois Compiled Statutes.

Mike Madigan makes fire by rubbing 2 ice cubes together.

Mike Madigan doesn’t cheat death. He wins fair and square.

Sorry, not relevant to the question I suppose. So I say Madigan as Montgomery Burns.

  43. - dbk - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 5:30 pm:

I hate to say it, but the first character who popped into mind was Lurch, of Addams Family fame. After all, they’re nearly the same … height.

  44. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 6:17 pm:

The Rauner duct tape ads were unbearable during March Madness.

Enough with the fake log cabin and fake flannel as if he’s running for top lumberjack of Illinois and not already our chief executive officer of three years now and a billionaire.

Was watching those ads with someone who voted for him in 2014 who remarked on what a punchable face he has in those commercials. So smug.

  45. - Tired of it all - Thursday, Apr 6, 17 @ 6:21 pm:

Madrigal should dress up as Rauner with flannel shirt and all. Then step inside a car tagged Illinois and proceed to drive it off a cliff saying, ” under my leadership, this is where Illinois is heading”.
