Rauner weekend roundup

Monday, Apr 10, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Heh…

* But he’s not really campaigning, according to the RGA

If you’ve been watching television lately, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Gov. Bruce Rauner on screen with a roll of duct tape and a message of blame for Democrats.

That’s because more than $95,115 worth of TV ads have been purchased in the television market that includes Decatur, part of a statewide ad campaign that Rauner says is unconnected to his 2018 gubernatorial hopes. […]

The ads began airing March 28 and are slated to continue at least through next week on WAND in Decatur and WCIA in Champaign, according to Federal Communications Commission documents obtained by the Herald & Review.

Those documents describe the ads as “non-candidate advertising” focusing on the issue of “Illinois governmental and fiscal reform,” meaning the expenditures are not required to be reported to the state’s election board.

…Adding… From the Southern Illinoisan

After an exhausting presidential election, many residents are apt to tune out political ads as soon as they appear, said Kent Redfield, an emeritus professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He said the TV spots likely won’t do much to improve Rauner’s polling numbers or shift the policy debate.

“The distinction between governing and campaigning seems to get blurrier and blurrier and this is another indication of that,” he said.

But, in addition to reiterating his message and appealing to his base of supporters, Redfield said the ads deliver an important message to Democrats considering their 2018 prospects.

“Part of it has nothing to do with the reaction of the average citizen,” Redfield said. “He’s doing it because he can do it and they’re trying to show that they’re in a position of strength vis-a-vis the Democrats.”

He’s not governing and he’s not campaigning, so what is he doing?

  2. - Fax Machine - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:01 am:

If he’s going to be running ads during Cubs games, he shouldn’t be touting his plan, he should just say some feel good “Go Cubs, Let’s Win 2″ because he needs to up his likeability, not bore people.

I’m kind of in the “any positive spot is positive” approach, but one need only look at Pat Quinn at the Blackhawks’ 2013 celebration to see the dangers for an unpopular Governor to try to invade Illinoisans’ sports.

Just one of the “boys” beer in hand. /s

The open skate was Saturday night so all he did on Friday night was to get his picture taken and leave.

“the expenditures are not required to be reported to the state’s election board.”

Ridiculous. They’re just making it up as they go along now.

Was the motorcycle jacket at the cleaners or was the seamstress adding more patches/flair?

  8. - Mr. K. - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:18 am:

He looks oddly lonely in these pictures.

They don’t do him any favors. He looks lost.

I don’t think Rainer is even worthy of snark anymore. It’s too easy, it’s too overdone, and oddly takes some of the heat off him. He is a very dislikable person because of his deeds. His homey, aw shucks I’m just a regular guy bit has become repulsive. He doesn’t seem to mind. He doesn’t have to.

  10. - Flynn's mom - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:28 am:

    This gets more surreal everyday.

  11. - working stiff - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:28 am:

    “non-candidate advertising”

sure looks like campaignin’ to me

  12. - Big Joe - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:34 am:

I know it won’t happen soon, but I truly wish that Bruce would just go away. He won’t do his job and present a balanced budget, so just GO AWAY already. Until that time I will just turn him off my TV at every turn. WORST governor in history!!

  13. - Annonin' - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:39 am:

Did he eat some fish or just slam?
He ran the DopeyDuct ads during the final 4 so he will probably inflict same on Cubs crowds.

  14. - Rogue Roni - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:39 am:

I thought I was safe from political ads on Hulu. I may have to pull the trigger and pay for ad free

  15. - Anon - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:40 am:

I wish he obtained a 3-year term limit on the office of governor.

  16. - Arock - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:40 am:

Big Joe- where has there been any balanced budget presented by anyone in Illinois in the last couple decades?

  17. - Nick Name - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 11:55 am:

“Those documents describe the ads as “non-candidate advertising” focusing on the issue of “Illinois governmental and fiscal reform,” meaning the expenditures are not required to be reported to the state’s election board.”

His lies are bad enough, but his lies about his lies are beyond infuriating.

  18. - Annonin' - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 12:07 pm:

    Mr/Ms Arock
Not sure anyone else claimed they submitted a balanced budget

  19. - El Conquistador - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 12:07 pm:

I’ve seen Brucie out and about wearing a couple of ridiculously contrived costumes of the “working man” drinking a Stag and it’s surreal.

Frankly, anyone that buys his schtick at this point has likely undergone a lobotomy earlier in life.

  20. - Former hillrod - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 12:09 pm:

Is the trash can van in the shop?

  21. - Keyrock - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 12:16 pm:

An ad like this could be effective:

Actor playing the Governor is in a closet. He’s looking through his 100 business suits, then checks out his jeans, his motorcycle costume, his cowboy outfit, his Carhartt, his pirate suit, and a clown outfit, etc.

He looks at the suits, and discusses his vulture capitalism and nursing home escapades. He talks about how much he likes wearing costumes to fool the people of Ill. Then he puts on the clown suit.

OW, can you write the rest? Maybe premiere it on Dad’s Home State?
Or has this already run and I missed the episode?

  22. - Ryan - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 1:02 pm:

    He drinking a Stag. Ha!

  23. - Give Me A Break - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 1:07 pm:

I’ve decided the Gov is really trying out to be a new member of the Village People given his wide array of outfits.

  24. - RR - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 1:09 pm:

Clearly Mackey is a liberal so the news guy that he tries to play is a joke. He works for NPR and yet has an opinion. The guy is not a news guy…he’s the liberal media.

  25. - Bill F. - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 2:13 pm:

The jacket, the camo hat, the bottle of Stag. It’s too much. Surely people beyond this website see through this ridiculous charade.

  26. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 3:11 pm:

After hockey, he went out and put his initials in the fresh concrete at the new warehouse. Problem was, couldn’t find any fresh concrete.

  27. - Molly Maguire - Monday, Apr 10, 17 @ 4:50 pm:

rockin’ the whole costume: jeans, camo hunting cap, Oakley sunglasses, Made in USA long-neck. what a phony.
