Rauner again claims deal is “very close”

Wednesday, Apr 19, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Kerry Lester

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner told a suburban business group today that state lawmakers are “very close” to a budget deal that would break a two-year stalemate.

He offered no details but called it “a big comprehensive package” and asked the crowd at a GOA Regional Business Association luncheon to “stay strong.”

Rauner, promoting his pro-business agenda in the speech in Elk Grove Village, called the suburbs “the backbone of Illinois prosperity.”

The GOA luncheon was one of three stops the governor is making in the suburbs today, with others at Maine East High School in Park Ridge and at a GOP dinner in Palatine.

The full audio is here.

* From John Patterson, spokesman for Illinois Senate President John Cullerton…

“We appreciate the governor’s optimism. Throughout all of this the Senate President has been working with Leader Radogno to do what’s best for the state, which is restore fiscal stability and stop the bleeding. Keep in mind, the governor’s own budget relies on the Senate’s success.”

* More from the event…

You are welcome to come to Texas anytime Governor, but if you think that a Texas based company is going to that hell hole you call a state, you got another thing coming.

    === they’re friends of mine … they’re impressed===

Well isn’t that nice, Bruce has friends that are impressed with his inability to govern.

  3. - Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:06 pm:

If he’d leave for Austin now and stay away, we’d have a better chance of gettin a budget.

  4. - RNUG - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:09 pm:

And it’s going to be hugely …

  5. - Living it daily - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:09 pm:

“how much I enjoy the process”?? what has he produced, a budget…. a balanced budget… a stop gap budget… what has he produced?

  6. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:11 pm:

What does he mean by “give me a little time?” Stripped of context, that could mean he’s telling people to stay away until he gets what he wants. Of course, it could be that they want to stay away and he’s urging them to reconsider, but either way, he’s not plugging for Illinois until he gets his agenda. It’s too bad the tweets didn’t say more.

  7. - cdog - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:11 pm:

    Rauner’s “claims” are worth nothing.

His credibility with delivering anything is negligible.

History will not be kind to this carnival barker.

    - Doug -

I’ll be in DFW for 5 days during Thanksgiving.

    Returning to Illinois…

===…and asked the crowd at a GOA Regional Business Association luncheon to “stay strong”.===

    Let’s be very clear;

Staying strong is thinking the destroying of social services and higher education… is part of a plan.

Not one other way to read that.

    Nope.

“If we get the grand bargain in the Senate done, I’m immediately going to Austin Texas.”
Does the House get a say?

  13. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

“How much I enjoy this…how much I enjoy this process…”

What is THIS? What does he enjoy - hurting vulnerable people and organizations?

  14. - Bigtwich - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:25 pm:

“If we get the grand bargain in the Senate done, I’m immediately going to Austin Texas.”

If he promises to stay that might get Madigan on board.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:25 pm:

Rauner does have 9 houses, one in Austin really isn’t all “that” important.

  16. - Deft Wing - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:26 pm:

  18. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:31 pm:

The deal can’t be “that” close, Rauner has yet to insert himself into crush it…

… that’s if I’m suppose to believe there is a deal, it is close, and Raunerites need to stay strong.

    Fiction is a tough lady.

  19. - Gruntled University Employee - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:32 pm:

    Dear Democratic Party of Illinois,

If you don’t hammer home, and I mean every hour of every day, the fact that Rauner enjoys destroying the social safety net and racking up dept that our great great great grandchildren will be paying off then you deserve to lose in 2018.

  20. - Winnin' - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:34 pm:

    What ‘Gruntled’ said.

===Other than blogging in you parents basement - Please give us anything that should be considered before reading your comments.===

The mere fact, twice, you engaged me, kinda undercuts your whole argument there.

    Good try thou, lol

  22. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:37 pm:

    It’s just getting weirder.

    – “I’ve got dozens of companies ready to come to Illinois. …I say give me a little time (for) changes I’m trying to make.”–

There it is again. Show of hands on who believes him?

–”A lot of governors around the country, they’re friends of mine … they’re impressed.”–

Wow — who does that sound like?

  23. - DeseDemDose - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:38 pm:

More bald face lies. What progress? Friends waiting to bring business? Governors around the country impressed? Name some names…

  24. - CrazyHorse - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:39 pm:

==”A lot of governors around the country, they’re friends of mine … they’re impressed.”==

Of course they are. As long as Bruce is in office they know they’re safe from winning the worst governor award. 49th place is way out of Bruce’s reach at this point.

  25. - Lovie - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:40 pm:

Is he on planet Earth? What’s he smoking or inhaling?

  26. - Skeptic - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:42 pm:

Of course “bargain is real close” comes from the same group who said “AFSCME is going on strike Sept. 1″ but whatever…

Rauner again claims deal is “very close”
This could be “Rauner again falsely claims deal is “very close” and it would be more accurate.”

I do not consider intentional, intellectual dishonesty to be a character trait that anyone should wish to emulate.

If Governor Gaslight were my 7 year old, he’d be in time out for lying….perpetually

  30. - Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 3:53 pm:

To be fair, the governor forgot to change his calendar and still thinks it’s mid February. Boy is he going to be disappointed when he gets to March 1 and realizes he killed the deal.

  31. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 4:03 pm:

So when the governor asserts that he’s personally lined up dozens of companies, how many are we talkin’?

24? 36? 48? More? All crazy excited about term limits that would kick in many, many years in the future, if ever?

And he lined them all up on the down low, without a whiff leaking to anyone, all those dozens?

He’s lucky that he’s rich and the governor. Because if he were a regular schmuck talking crazy like that on the street, they’d toss a net over him.

  32. - Winnin' - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 4:10 pm:

Governor Inept continues to try to make the case that he is ept.

    What “process?”

  34. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 4:34 pm:

Glad to have the gov explain how those pesky judges block things and just wont get on board. /s

    Always someone else’s fault

  35. - oldman - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 4:39 pm:

While I’m sure the businessmen were polite, I’m guessing they don’t believe one thing he says.

===.@GovRauner: “A lot of governors around the country, they’re friends of mine … they’re impressed.”===

LOL, I just spit out my coffee. I want names.

  37. - Jocko - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 4:58 pm:

Further down in Lester’s article, “Cogent Communications…has a $449,000 internet services contract with the state…But to date, it’s received only $30,000 of that money.”

Stay strong GOA Regional Business Association!

  38. - peon - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 5:10 pm:

The Governor makes the same claims about businesses he is talking to (and about to move here) in his Crains editorial board interview June 23rd last year. No-one calls him on this stuff.

  39. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 5:47 pm:

Just the usual drive-by analysis, peon.

  40. - Generic Drone - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 6:02 pm:

Rauner is “real close” to being re-elected.

  41. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 6:46 pm:

If Rauner does run for re-election, because, ya know he’s busy out in them there fields growin’ that there economy ya know, he will face a call out on his fabrications in the 2018 debates. Bet he won’t be able to remember company names then either.

  42. - Pundent - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 6:53 pm:

I think we can all agree that the state is in worse shape since Rauner took office. We can disagree on why or who is responsible. But for a leader to ANY leader to say “how much he enjoys this process” is beyond infuriating.

  43. - The Dude Abides - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 7:08 pm:

While Illinois burns the Governor is enjoying being incompetent at his job. He was at it again today making more empty promises.

  44. - XDNR - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 8:29 pm:

“Rauner says biggest surprise of working in Springfield is “how much I enjoy this. …how much I enjoy the process.” What process has he been involved with other than busting the “grand bargain”, the deliberate devastation to Higher Ed and Social Services resulting in layoffs, more students going to out of state institutions to seek educational opportunities, the 100K plus needy and poor citizens left without services; the multiple credit downgrades due to the $13 plus billion backlog of unpaid bills and resulting fiscal instability. But hey he is enjoying the process because he’s “win’in and “campaign’in” and the lame weak media is clueless.

  45. - Newsclown - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 9:38 pm:

I think he mentioned Austin because he wants to go to SXSW.
Governor Rauner is suffering from Dinning-Krueger syndrome.
His friends out West tell him: “Bless Your Heart”, and he doesn’t get what they really mean.

  46. - Newsclown - Wednesday, Apr 19, 17 @ 9:40 pm:

“I was gonna bring my budget but my dog Stella ate it”.

  47. - RNUG - Thursday, Apr 20, 17 @ 12:18 am:

Rauner is as close to getting a budget deal as I am to winning $100M in the Illinois Lottery … and I only buy 1 or 2 tickets a year.

  48. - Hit Em With the Hein - Thursday, Apr 20, 17 @ 8:26 am:

Man this guy really has a hankerin’ for some Franklin BBQ! How much you think he pays for someone else to stand in the line for him?
