Pritzker campaign finally responds to Tribune property tax series

Wednesday, Jun 14, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’ve seen the responses by the ILGOP, the governor and most of the Democratic gubernatorial candidates to the Tribune’s property tax appeals series. But, curiously enough, JB Pritzker has been silent. Perhaps it was because of his own issues on this topic, or perhaps he’s still laying low after the release of the Blagojevich audio tapes.

Anyway, I asked for a response and here’s what the Pritzker people sent me…

“The property tax system in Cook County is flawed. We need to look at ways to make sure that every county across our state is investing in and upgrading its technology to assist in evaluating the millions of properties being assessed. We also need to continue simplifying and making it easier for residents to appeal assessment inaccuracies even without the help of a professional. Residents need to know their rights when it comes to asking for a reassessment, and educating homeowners should be a priority. When studies show inequality, it’s the government’s job to put in place remedies that ensure every resident is being treated fairly under the system.”

Your thoughts on this response?

a lot of deflection away from his foibles.

  2. - Keyrock - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:36 am:

Boy, is that weak. It almost reads like:
“Above all else, we must protect the business and political interests of my supporters, Joe Berrios, Mike Madigan, and Ed Burke.”

  3. - Perrid - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:37 am:

Pretty timid. Basically says “IF this study is correct, then someone should do something.”

  4. - phocion - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:38 am:

Watered down drivel clearly written by a committee, or a political science undergrad intern. Meaningless, clueless, tone deaf. Lame.

  5. - Ed O'Bradovich - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:39 am:

The system seemed to work well for him.

  6. - Oneman - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:40 am:

Think there is some political gain here if you promote just making the damn statements easier to read and understand.

  7. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:41 am:

weak. not event to the point of the people running things and benefitting mightily from it. and, more importantly, tech mentioned first? and then appeals and educating? and inequality mildly mentioned last? the Tribune series talks about vast inequality. it’s not just the poor, though things hurt them the most, but everyone vs. the very wealthy. Pritzker does not get this incredibly important matter.

  8. - Follow the constitution - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:42 am:

Illinois needs leadership that will finally follow the constitution and fund education like the infrastructure it is. If the state funded our schools appropriately property taxes would not be an issue.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:43 am:

The Prizker Comm Crew, and the Campaign Crew, to be fair, really lack in rapid response(s) and it’s a glaring hole, here in this specific response, that a bland response that coulda been done days ago took so long because to the obvious lacking that Pritzker’s Crew has in understanding the messaging and oppo response and how crippling it is for a campaign.

The lacking in rapid response to an oppo hit paralyzed the campaign, and it shows the Pritzker Campaign can be stalled, easily, with oppo dumps.

    Do better.

  10. - RaunerNeedsToGo - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:43 am:

New tech won’t help if the assessor chooses not to use it. Weak.

  11. - Oneman - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:54 am:

    RaunerNeedsToGo…

Seems to me forced standardized state statement format would be a good start and fairly easy to implement.

  12. - Tollway Tommy - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 10:54 am:

I wish the process was as easy as buying a mansion in the Gold Coast and depreciating its value…

  13. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:01 am:

Limp. “The system is flawed (but thankfully wasn’t fixed before I could squeeze it) 🤗

  14. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:05 am:

    Tollway Tommy for the win.

  15. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:05 am:

How about increasing the accuracy up front and reducing the inequity that way, so that people don’t have to actively appeal to get the right assessment in the first place? Yes, it would throw a lot of property tax appeal lawyers off the gravy train, but too bad.

  16. - Sheesh! - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:14 am:

    @Tollway Tommy:

Why is it that I think if someone in the bungalow belt removed the toilets in a second house next door to his or her primary residence that the Assessor would not reduce the assessments by a dollar?

  17. - walker - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:37 am:

Ron: Agree. How about also adding a random audit process, so that “corrections” are not solely generated by homeowner appeals?

  18. - JoeMaddon - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:55 am:

    Really weak statement…

I continue to be unimpressed with the massive Pritzker comms crew.

  19. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 11:58 am:

Good idea walker. Anything that doesn’t involve the homeowner having to take an affirmative, time consuming and potentially expensive act to fix what should have been done correctly already would be a good move. Too much reliance on fixing things after the fact.

  20. - Sheesh! - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 12:16 pm:

This is the most nondescript campaign statement that I have ever read. Totally lame.

Seriously, I am beginning to believe that Pritzker can be defeated in the primary, endorsements or not.

  21. - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 12:25 pm:

I agree with OW and JoeMaddon here. The Pritzker comms shop is unimpressive.

  22. - O.B. - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 1:33 pm:

To Tollway Tommy : Right om the money

  23. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 3:27 pm:

i haven’t seen other democrats response other than Kennedy.

  24. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jun 14, 17 @ 8:40 pm:

This statement proves once again that all the money in the world can’t necessarily buy quality messaging. Especially if the person most needing the effective messaging has already been, to quote Shakespeare, “hoist with his owne petar”.
