Negative mailers land in House Democratic districts

Wednesday, Jun 28, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) just sent me a photo of a mail piece that landed in her district yesterday…

* She also sent me this text…

I just voted to freeze property taxes. Regardless if I liked the bill or not I took the vote in order to compromise with the Governor on his non budgetary demands. The 46th district and the entire state of Illinois desperately need a budget. It is time for the Governor to stop spending his money on mail and do his job.

Rauner does NOT want a budget.

    No way. No how.

    Nope.

Try if ya like to convince me different…

  2. - HistProf - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:58 pm:

Those are pretty straightforward . . .um . . lies. Tell me again why we accept this as respectable political discourse?

  3. - illini97 - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:58 pm:

Received the same for Katie Stuart. Apparently if it weren’t for her 6 months in the legislature, Illinois would be a glorious bastion of economic prosperity.

We haven’t had a budget in two years. Rep. Stuart has been around for six months. Speaker Madigan has been around for 30 years. No budget in two years.

Well, who came into office two years ago?
    a)Rep. Stuart
    b)Speaker Madigan
    c)Governor Rauner

  4. - OpenYourEyes - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:01 pm:

This should be proof that Gov Rauner doesn’t want a budget. That flier states “Property Tax Freeze = Stopped”. They just voted on it again less than 1 hour ago.

Only 1 Republican voted for it.

  5. - John Rawlss - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:02 pm:

Deb, you didnt vote for a prop tax freeze. Exempting all sorts of things is FAKE reform. All the Madigan dems are SHAM politicians

  6. - Saluki - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

Who is this “paid for by”?

  7. - Redraider - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:06 pm:

Well said OW, this special session that the Governor called was to lure Democrats out of their districts in order for him to send attack ads to their constituents without response. It is nothing more than a 10 day taxpayers financed commercial from a Governor that has never moved beyond campaign mode.

  8. - Redraider - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:10 pm:

Well, why not Bruce Rauner is the SHAM Governor

  9. - godhelpusall - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

Rauner is calling their bluff. He’s making them stay until he gets a balanced budget on his desk. I personally called the Speaker and the Gov. today to make it known I want a budget done and signed.

  10. - LTSW - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:18 pm:

Rauner has no plan if they do put a balanced budget on his desk. I think these mailers prove it.

  11. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:25 pm:

    Says Rep. Conroy:
” Regardless if I liked the bill or not I took the vote in order to compromise with the Governor on his non budgetary demands”.

I’m pretty sure she didn’t like the bill and even more sure that’s not why she voted for it.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:27 pm:

===and even more sure that’s not why she voted for it.===

    Really, how so?

  13. - Atsuishin - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:37 pm:

Tell how can you call the dems bill a tax freeze if it will continue to allow tax increases? Chicago, the primate city, is not reformed at all! I would hate to find out what Madigan thinks balanced is. glad I don’t have to. Im safe from any tax increases here in Texas.

  14. - Franklin Delano Bluth - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:43 pm:

    @ Illini97

Your comment is one of the best and most succinct rebuttals to these ILGOP lies I’ve seen.

  15. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:45 pm:

===Negative mailers land in House Democratic districts===

Interesting use of the passive voice in that headline. Do we know which Rauner-funded entity mailed these attack ads?

  16. - Stewed Prunes - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:51 pm:

    Rauner attack mailings = BAD
    Madigan attack mailings = GOOD

Seriously, does anyone remember when Madigan was the minority leader for two years (1995-97) and his operation mailed pieces almost nonstop into swing districts until he regained the majority?

  17. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:53 pm:

===does anyone remember when Madigan was the minority leader for two years (1995-97)===

Irish Alzheimers: you forget everything except grudges.

It’s been two decades, let it go man.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:53 pm:

    - Stewed Prunes -

In the past 229 years, no other state had gone without a budget for 2 years…

… you wanna compare “now” to 1995?

    You don’t want a budget.

Just say you don’t and you can forgo all the typing…

  19. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 3:56 pm:

Willy, humor me for once. You really think Rep. Conroy voted for this to compromise with the Governor? Had nothing to do with saving face back home where property taxes (in her district) are especially out of whack?

Her and Reps like her is why this silly exercise of these votes are happening. On the positive side for her…this mailing won’t even leave a mark.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:02 pm:

===…humor me for once. You really think Rep. Conroy voted for this to compromise with the Governor? Had nothing to do with saving face back home where property taxes (in her district) are especially out of whack?===

She voted as she did, the “mailer” isn’t changing her mind, the ads aren’t changing any minds.

If that was the case, Rauner woulda had every bit of his Agenda passed and signed by now by this “unprecedented” uprise by “all” these Dems.

Rauner won’t take wins, 90% or anything above 50% it seems.

Humor ME… how can a 90% win not be “good enough”

How can a 50% win not be “good enough”

  21. - Mama - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:07 pm:

Ads like this proves Rauner does not want a budget.

  22. - Cable Line Beer Gardener - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:08 pm:

    A guy

Deb Conroy is well liked by her district-and she listens to her constituents. If she said she voted for the freeze as a compromise, I take that as her word. And I live in her district, and my property taxes are ‘out of whack’ because the State fails to adequately fund the schools in my district.

  23. - Free Set of Steak Knives - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:08 pm:

=== Had nothing to do with saving face back home where property taxes (in her district) are especially out of whack? ===

With all due respect, Rep. Conroy doesn’t need to save face back home. She represents DuPage County. Local property tax rates are the responsibility of the local elected officials, not Deb Conroy and Mike Madigan.

  24. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:11 pm:

Willy, that’s two questions and two arguments; I’m not defending not accepting 90%. Haven’t for quite some time.
I’m also not buying that she voted for this for the reason she stated.
I’m sick of the votes taken today. And I’m sick of the prolonged impasse.
We’re at a gunfight at the OK Corral and no one is responding to Draw. It’s High Noon. It’s hot. And nothing is being settled while this machismo standoff continues.
The side shows are more irritating than usual. Her dopey vote is a sideshow. Every vote today is a sideshow. The mail is a sideshow. It’s all stupid.
Meanwhile, not a soul who can actually do something about it (2 guys) feels an ounce of shame.
    That is the biggest shame.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:32 pm:

    ===Her dopey vote is a sideshow===

    And the mail is/was what?

The Madigan ads, airing this morning during the “Today” show are… what?

Here’s the “rub” to your both sides…

Rauner solely blows up 2 Grand Compronises, does robocalls, mailings, and Rauner claims… “I’m not focused on Politics”… while the State Raunerite Party, which are deathly afraid it seems of “Rauner” and “Republican” in the same sentence…

… all your “sick”… and your “both sides”….

Who exactly has been blowing all this up… governmentally?

  26. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:33 pm:

    Unity!

  27. - Piece of Work - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:49 pm:

So, we had a budget all of the other years other than the past 2.

How are the finances of the state? How does the pension funding stand? Why did the state need to increase the income tax rate 67% for 4 years, raking in $30 billion from taxpayers pockets?

    Where was MJM in the 70’s, 80″s, 90’s, 2000’s?

There was a budget in place, but nobody paid any attention to it and freely spent money they didn’t have and robbed $ from areas that were sacred.

Rauner was nowhere near state government all those years. Other current players were.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:53 pm:

    - Piece of Work -

I’ll make real, real simple for you.

    “Ready?”

No Budget for 2 years > “30 years” nonsense

If math is tough for ya, “>”, the alley-gait-or eats the bigger thing.

Having no budget for 2 years has been far worse than “30 years”

By nearly every measure Illinois is worse off with Rauner as governor.

Don’t take my word for it…

  29. - ILPundit - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 4:57 pm:

Everyone is missing a very important point here.

Direct mail campaigns, unlike most other political communications, take a lot of time to get to the mailbox. You have the design phase, printing phase, bulk mail preparation phase, and because they go out bulk-rate, it can take anywhere from 3-5 days from the time they are dropped at the post office to hit mailboxes.

More simply put, these mailers were almost certainly in the can before the very first day of Rauner’s special sessions.

Repeat after me folks: Governor. Rauner. Does. Not. Want. A. Budget. Period.

“To see what is front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle” — George Orwell

  30. - Michael Westen - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 5:16 pm:

“Seriously, does anyone remember when Madigan was the minority leader for two years (1995-97) and his operation mailed pieces almost nonstop into swing districts until he regained the majority?”

Forget about 1995-1997, I have it on good authority that in 1955-1957, Madigan stepped on a crack and broke his mother’s back! And, what’s more, he refused to come over when the other side yelled, “Red Rover, red rover, send Mikey on over.” What are you going to about that!

    HRO? Rauner?

It looks like some R’s in her neck of the woods DuPage County didn’t vote.

Would somebody tell Tim Schneider to knock it off?

  33. - realworld - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 7:37 pm:

    GO Governor

  34. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 7:40 pm:

    ===GO Governor===

Aw, his term ends in January of 2019. You’re being a bit harsh. He can stay put, just get a budget….

  35. - realworld - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 7:48 pm:

LOL Oswego I mean I support Him all the way.

  36. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 7:56 pm:

===I mean I support Him all the way.===

    “Him”?

    When did Rauner get Divine?

Hey, where ya following him, to Charleston when he closes EIU or to a random closed social service to tell them it was only a business decision, no hard feelings being fooled on that “honoring contract” thingy?

Maybe with His (Rauner’s) Grace we’ll survive His (Rauner’s) destruction?

    That’s fun.

  37. - Seymourkid - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 11:14 pm:

I live in Conroy’s district. We have been getting these about every 2 weeks since the fall of 2016. They say paid for by the Illinois Republican Party.

  38. - James Knell - Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 11:29 pm:

I guess all that unity speech at the start of the special session was a total joke. That took a whole week!

    Governor Junk?
    Governor Joke?
    Governor Rich Spoiled Bully?

Yeah, people in Villa Park love that kind of person. That’s why his candidate in the 46th, Home School Heidi dropped from 47.5% in 2014 to 41% in 2016.

    What does this even mean?

Do you even know what this means?

    Where is Rauner “going”?
