Today’s quotable: “It’s not about you”

Thursday, Jun 29, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Remember this Bruce Rauner quote from the other day?

I’m giving speeches seven days a week, five, six times a day. I’m speaking at African American churches every Sunday morning, and I judge myself by how many standing ovations I get.

* Bernie followed up

Rauner’s public schedules do not list anywhere close to the number of speeches he claimed to give, and there is not always an African-American church on his weekend schedule.

He and his wife were at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Springfield on Sunday, but TERESA HALEY, a member there who happens to be president of the Illinois chapter and Springfield branch of the NAACP, said there was no speech. Rauner introduced himself and his wife when visitors were asked to say who they were, and he said something like, “It’s not about Democrat or Republican, it’s about coming together and worshiping Sunday morning,” Haley said. She said the Rauners seemed to enjoy the service.

She said Rauner “did walk around and introduce himself to several people.”

“No one gave him a standing ovation,” Haley said.

“When you go to church for fellowship and to praise God … it’s not about you,” she said.

The same could be said of his public service…”it’s not about you.”

  2. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:06 pm:

===“When you go to church for fellowship and to praise God … it’s not about you,” she said.===

Welp, the Church Tour has a lil different feel now, don’t it?

“Many Dems in the House and Senate tell me”

“Dozens of companies want to come here”

“Old ladies, Democrats, tell me to stay strong”

“I spoke with Speaker Madigan and President Cullerton”

    - Phony Bruce Rauner… day after day after day…

Now it’s standing ovations in churches.

    Dear Gov. Rauner.

    Matthew, Chapter 6…

It’s not about you. In those instances, it’s not about… you.

  3. - Rogue Roni - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:09 pm:

Was there every a question about him lying on this?

““When you go to church for fellowship and to praise God … it’s not about you,” she said.”

It is if you’re really rich and think you’re a god.

  5. - Huh? - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:12 pm:

“Rauner introduced himself and his wife when visitors were asked to say who they were …”

This made my day. Sort of puts a pin in his ego. The governor attending a church and being asked “who are you”.

  6. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:14 pm:

    You’ve been Bernied.

Rauner has always betrayed a messiah complex; only he can “save” the state.

But seriously, who lies about getting standing ovations in church? It’s creepy psycho on so many levels.

Did Blago say anything that crazy?

  7. - @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:14 pm:

    Matthew 21:11-13

Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!”

Our chief executive has more than a passing resemblance to the nation’s in his willingness to say anything if he thinks it will help his cause in the moment. There is a clinical term for that type of behavior. Most of us aren’t like that, but we’d do well to recognize that a few are and they’re really dangerous to our well being.

  9. - Anon221 - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:17 pm:

Now that his claim has at least one refutation, when does he trot the story out again??? Like OW listed, Rauner loves to tell stories. Some even resemble tall tales. Hope he’s been vaccinated for “Quinnochioitis”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a__QtNgI1LE

    Thos Jefferson. Sorry

===Was there every a question about him lying on this?===

Unlike “Honest Abe” Rauner will be remembered as “Dishonest Bruce”.

  13. - What's in a name? - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:26 pm:

What’s the difference between God and Bruce Rauner?

God doesn’t think he is Bruce Rauner.

  14. - Annonin' - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:30 pm:

And he lied about how many towns passed right to work…the real question is how he is tied up in the law suits…droppin’ some major moolah perhaps

  15. - Ole' Nelson - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:36 pm:

If meeting your goal requires you to be fake, phony, and lie, you should really question whether the goal is worth it. How can this guy stand himself? Money can’t buy class, obviously.

  16. - In A Minute - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:39 pm:

Its funny to see so many people get agitated parsing Rauner’s statements when the state has been on fire for 15 years and he is the only person willing to put forth workable ideas on how to put the fire out.

  17. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:49 pm:

    “Rauner proposes workable solutions?”
    So does everyone else.
Problem is we’re being destroyed daily, while he keeps proposing, but not governing.

  18. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

LOL, “parsing?” You obviously have no idea what that word means,

He’s peddling unambiguous, flat out, whack a doo whoppers.

  19. - Haha - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

In a Minute, he’s doing such a great job with those workable ideas too. The best way to negotiate change is to continually, publicly, bash the very people you have to negotiate with and claim zero fault for the much greater mess we’re in today.

  20. - titan - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:55 pm:

Most politicians understand that church is all about God … but they also think that they are God

  21. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:57 pm:

    ===Most===

You have other examples, in the majority, of politicians saying they get standing ovations in church.

    “Most”

So over 60 Illinois House members and 30 Illinois Senate members would say this?

    Hmm.

  22. - Romeo - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:07 pm:

Where could one find Rauner’s public schedule?

  23. - Really - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:12 pm:

What is his church go’n costume?

  24. - Free Set of Steak Knives - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:14 pm:

    Great journalism, a devastating piece.

Will Chicago t.v. stations be wise enough to start following the governor on Sundays?

  25. - zatoichi - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:19 pm:

He gives 35-42 speeches a week? That is solid mic time. I thought the budget took up all his time.

  26. - Chucktownian - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:25 pm:

    He exaggerates like Trump…

  27. - JS Mill - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:29 pm:

=Rauner has always betrayed a messiah complex; only he can “save” the state.

But seriously, who lies about getting standing ovations in church? It’s creepy psycho on so many levels.=

This is a prime example of the diva-like culture that surrounds CEO’s.

Years of lap dogs in the board room and otherwise, along with acquiescence to innumerable demands for benefits and compensation that would make Van Halen blush, creates a mindset of infallibility de-coupled from the real working world.

His actions border on personality disorder-level of sociopathy.

  28. - Curl of the Burl - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 1:48 pm:

Free - meh. Bernie “happened” to find a politically active Democrat who is a member of the church Governor & Mrs. Rauner attended. That is pretty typical of Bernie’s columns.

Governor Rauner attended my church the day before Memorial Day. He was very friendly to anyone who came up to him. No one lectured him and he was not blurting out braggadocios statements. He was, of course, wearing cowboy jeans and motorcycle boots. That was a bit silly considering most of us wear t-shirts and jeans but whatever.

  29. - 80%IsAGoodDeal - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 2:30 pm:

    - @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 12:14 pm: “Matthew 21:11-13″

    This is a good one!

  30. - Chicago 20 - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

    - Curl

    Did Rauner give a speech?
    How many standing ovations?

  31. - Curl of the Burl - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

20 - no. He has attended at least twice, and both times no one has acknowledged his attendance nor has he been allowed to speak.

  32. - Cleric dcn - Thursday, Jun 29, 17 @ 4:36 pm:

Theresa Haley, that is best thing I have heard yet in response to something Rauner said. It is all about The Lord. I sure hope He can grace some of the leaders with wisdom.
