House Democratic women stage brief “sit-in” at governor’s office

Monday, Jul 3, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* A bit of theater today…

* Here’s the video. Richard Goldberg served up some trademark snark

* And then…

GOP Reps. Barbara Wheeler, Keith Wheeler, Margo McDermed, Grant Wehrli, Tony McCombie, Lindsay Parkhurst, Jeanne Ives and Peter Breen showed up.

The group of anti-tax Republicans whipped out their own phones and apparently started asking the Democrats about their tax hike plan. The Democrats then returned to the floor. I’m hoping to find video of the latter exchange. If you see it somewhere, post a link in comments.

…Adding… From the Democratic women…

“We believe now is the time to end this state budget impasse and yesterday’s votes are an important step toward a solution. Our group today visited the Governor’s office to request a meeting with the Governor to ask him to approve this package.

We have made significant compromises and have seen bipartisan support for a balanced budget. Rather than issuing veto threats, we want to meet with the Governor to explain why this is the right solution and hope he will meet with us soon.”

The Koch’s, Uhlein, and Griffin want a Veto. So Rauner will Veto.

  2. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:08 pm:

Can’t we just drop the stunts and counter-stunts for a few days? Good grief.

  3. - Echo The Bunnyman - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:10 pm:

Madigan, The Democrats, Republicans, Uhlein, and Griffin want a Veto. Fixed it for you… Raising taxes without cuts hurts everyone. They are all culpable.

==started asking the Democrats about their tax hike plan==

I hope the Dems replied with questions about how the Republicans proposed to pay the backlog of bills without money. The Dems can answer “Read our bills.” could the Republicans do the same?

The question that needs to be repeated over and over is this: “Where is your bill?” If someone has a great idea, it needs to be in a bill. If it’s not in a bill, it’s meaningless.

    Governor Snowflake

Remember this federal budget showdown in 2013 and how a group of female senators got the job done. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/16/shutdown-women_n_4110268.html. I’ve been looking to see our IL female representatives do the same and so was sad to see Rodogno go. Stunts and counter-stunts? Sounds like a put down to me.

  7. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:18 pm:

4.95% is the GOP tax hike rate. Just keep saying this over and over Democrats. Talk about the cuts in your bill. Please don’t let Rauner win the messaging war again.

  8. - Passive Agressive - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:19 pm:

Guess the Governor must’ve been “out to lunch” and not available to meet.

  9. - Streator Curmudgeon - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:24 pm:

    A sit-in on overstuffed sofas.

How things have changed since the Sixties.

  10. - doggonit - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:24 pm:

I think the best outcome for Rauner politically is to veto the tax increase and be overriden. Saves face with base without owning collapse

  11. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:25 pm:

–Stunts and counter-stunts? Sounds like a put down to me.–

OK, take it that way if you like. It goes for both sides of the aisle. Less theatrics.

They should’ve thought about that before cutting off negotiations to what could’ve been a real agreement.

  13. - Revolver - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:27 pm:

I didn’t hear any snark, I just heard Rich stating facts to a group of showboaters.

  14. - Anonymous - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:29 pm:

    ==veto threats==

Threat seems like such a weak description. Veto guarantee sounds much more accurate.

  15. - Glengarry - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:30 pm:

Goldberg gets paid quite a bit for talking point rebuttals. That’s not exactly snark. He’s overrated and overpaid.

  16. - California Guy - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:31 pm:

Isn’t everybody going to miss these political stunts! Don’t feel sorry when these folks (reps and dems alike) spend their 4th of July in meetings!

  17. - Salvo - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:33 pm:

What are the “significant compromises” these Dem legislators have made? Not passing an even bigger tax hike?

  18. - Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:35 pm:

If you are going to pull a silly stunt, you look really silly leaving when somebody does the same thing to you. They should have called their male counterparts and filled the office up. Then pull out there phones and said, “where is your budget? What is the alternative to this? The governor called for a tax hike and this is the rate he wanted.”

  19. - Pot calling kettle - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:38 pm:

==They should’ve thought about that before cutting off negotiations to what could’ve been a real agreement. ==

If you’ve been paying attention, Rauner has not been willing to negotiate for quite some time. Back when he was negotiatin’, it became clear he wasn’t doing so in good faith when he pulled the Republicans in the senate off of the negotiated bills when it became clear they would pass.

Last week, when the leaders were meeting on the 3rd floor, Rauner was cooling his heels in his office.

The only person who cut off negotiations was Rauner.

  20. - DuPage - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:40 pm:

Wasted effort. They need to realize Rauner does not care.

  21. - Amalia - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:40 pm:

ah, but who is the Patty Murray of SF?

  22. - tobias846 - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

I think doggonit is right. A veto followed by a quick override would be an excellent face-saver for Rauner. Politically that might be better for him than trading a tax hike for a property tax freeze.

Maybe that’s what he secretly wants, but I doubt it. I don’t think he’s capable of that kind of eleven-dimensional chess stuff.

  23. - UISer - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:57 pm:

As if everything the Governor does isn’t political theater.

  24. - CookR - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 12:58 pm:

If the 15 GOP yes votes are “Profiles in Courage” what are the Dem no votes?

  25. - Dandy Edward - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:00 pm:

What good is a tax increase if you do not fix the problem that got us into this mess? We spend too much. 2/3 billion of budget savings in 2018 is not the answer. You need to fix the root of the problem which is pensions, property taxes etc. People will still be leaving the state.

  26. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:10 pm:

    – Raising taxes without cuts…–

That statement requires complete and willful ignorance. Or it’s just a lie, easily refuted.

    Which do you prefer?

Dandy - This budget actually spends approximately $3 billion less than our currently spending clip under the Gov’s oversight.

    There were cuts.

  29. - Down-State is still Down-state - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:24 pm:

I don’t see how the down state people that were elected to have a solution were voting no against this. Convenient for Stuart to be voting no when it doesn’t matter. What’s it like for her to be Madigan’s lap dog. When does the fix of the real problem start? will it be allowed?

  30. - Shemp - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:25 pm:

High level discourse going on right there.

  31. - Western IL - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:26 pm:

You know what would be really awesome? IF Republican men staged a brief sit-it @ Madigan’s office. But I suppose that would be sexism, straight up, yes? ;)

  32. - Annonin' - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 1:31 pm:

Yikes did nGoldie not have a femail $uper$tar to roll out…verrrrrrry bad. And where was Gov. “Happy” Junk?

  33. - Oy - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 2:01 pm:

Margo McDermed … classy as always.

  34. - WorkingMom - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

Why didn’t they meet with the Gov long ago? Pulling the ‘woman’ card out now, after spiking taxes without serious reforms is a meaningless stunt. They don’t come with clean hands…all voted for the Speaker and no doubt have their Madigan clocks in a very special place.

  35. - JS Mill - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 3:38 pm:

Grant Wherli- GOP tough guy and Twitter troll.

    He is such a twerp.

=Raising taxes without cuts hurts everyone.=

    Paying the bills helps everyone.

And, cutting has been going on for the last five years. If you want go look at the transportation reimbursements for schools. Higher ed has received huge cuts.\

    Social services were zeroed out.

Those are real cuts. And they have hurt far more than they have helped.

  36. - VanillaMan - Monday, Jul 3, 17 @ 4:41 pm:

==What good is a tax increase if you do not fix the problem that got us into this mess?==

    Good question.

    Here’s the answer:
It’s not 2014 anymore, which means that for three years things went from bad to worse, eating up and destroying the means to do what you voted Rauner to do. Rauner took us from bad to worse. Rauner needed to find a way to get his reforms passed, but chose the wrong way. Instead of working with experienced veterans who were ready to sell his agenda, Rauner thought he could do what worked for him in his world. So he went head to head with the vast majority party and attacked them, burned every bipartisan compromise, and repeatedly gambled with what was left of our resources. Rauner screwed up and refused to fix his mistakes.

Trust me. No one, not Former Governor Lingle, Edgar, Ryan or Thompson told him to trash everyone holding office so that they’d support his Agenda. No one with any experience in office told him to play a game of chicken at the expense of everyone. Rauner failed all on his own.

So you see, we’re out of options because Rauner wouldn’t respect how government works, passes legislation or judicate. Bruce thought he could just change Illinois without working for change.

    We lose because Rauner failed.

    That’s why.

Who was the rep who thought the current income tax rate was 3.95% and the tax rate passed did not increase by 32%?
