Breen to be new House GOP floor leader

Thursday, Jul 27, 2017

* House Republican Leader Jim Durkin will announce this evening that Rep. Peter Breen will take over as his new floor leader.

Breen (R-Lombard) is an attorney who advocates for pro-life causes. He’s very sharp in floor debates, so this role should be a good fit. He’s from the Jeanne Ives ideological wing in the HGOP caucus, but doesn’t have the same personal abrasiveness as some of those folks. Even so, it’s going to be interesting watching this guy work. Smart, very conservative and quick-witted.

Former floor leader Steve Andersson was ousted after he helped lead the override of Gov. Rauner’s budget and tax hike vetoes. It’s pretty darned certain that Rep. Breen won’t ever be doing anything like that.

    – He’s from the Jeanne Ives ideological wing in the HGOP caucus –

I think it’s more of a claw than a wing

The IPI will take over as Floor Leadr(?)

Rich: please delete mine on Breen, and save me once again from appearing a fool.

  4. - My New Handle - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 6:17 pm:

Pro-life or anti-abortion? There is a world of difference.

  5. - JS Mill - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 6:50 pm:

    Well, this is fun.

  6. - baloneymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:00 pm:

    the Mooch wasn’t available

  7. - baloneymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:02 pm:

can they outsource the floor job and maybe Sandack could come back to the playground. that would be fun

  8. - Norseman - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:08 pm:

    Well said Michelle.

  9. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:11 pm:

ILGOP continues to Whig themselves. They’ll end up with 25% of the popular vote next year.

  10. - baloneymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:16 pm:

what do you like Henry, a claw or a wing…

  11. - A guy - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:18 pm:

He’ll surprise you. He’s a brilliant guy, extraordinarily affable, and would be a contender for among the most talented people under the dome. He’s liked by many on the other side, maybe even most.

As Rich says, very quick-witted and very experienced and thoughtful. He’ll surprise most of you.

  12. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:32 pm:

Good thing Bruce doesn’t have a social agenda.

  13. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 7:53 pm:

He’s from the Thomas More Society. Those folks aren’t smart. IPI types.

  14. - Central moderate - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 9:09 pm:

Oh, God. The GOP voice of God has come to the floor. Bad choice.

  15. - blue dog dem - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 9:16 pm:

As a former bleed blue Dem and now an independent, many of you are missing the ire towards the Democrats for abandoning the middle class. Its going to take some time, but this state is ripe for transition.

  16. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 9:19 pm:

    He’ll do an excellent job.

  17. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 9:24 pm:

Anderson’s departure, is akin to Comey being fired.

Rauner, just ain’t got a clue.

Blood in the streets of Chicago and he’s silent.

    Flooding and he’s silent.

He hasn’t got an ounce of what it takes to be a statesman. Sad.

His current campaign is a repeat… not an original thought.

  18. - cdog - Thursday, Jul 27, 17 @ 9:26 pm:

    Sounds like a good choice.

I agree with blue dog dem. I used to be way farther left, even donated to Dems, but they went off reservation during Obama’s last term. I went so far left I came all the way around to being much more libertarian and conservative.

It’s going to be an interesting few years.

  19. - NorthsideNoMore - Friday, Jul 28, 17 @ 1:03 am:

Breens very articulate and should be a formitable debater on the floor.

  20. - PDJT - Friday, Jul 28, 17 @ 7:47 am:

“Former floor leader Steve Andersson was ousted after he helped lead the override of Gov. Rauner’s budget and tax hike vetoes. It’s pretty darned certain that Rep. Breen won’t ever be doing anything like that.”

This should make it clear. Those who are willing to do what is best for the citizens of Illinois, and not willing to hold to the Crisis Creatin’ Governer’s plan (no matter what the cost), are not welcome in said governor’s republican party.

  21. - Anonymous - Friday, Jul 28, 17 @ 8:42 am:

Butler would have been a better choice.

  22. - Glen Ellyn Red - Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 4:28 pm:

Breen may not even get re-elected in his own district, where most are NOT Tea Party extremists.
