Preckwinkle withdraws motion seeking $17 million in damages from IRMA

Tuesday, Aug 8, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Background is here. Press release…

It was always our intention to protect the revenue that finances the County’s critical public health and public safety services. Now that the Appellate Court has rejected the emergency motion that would again prevent us from collecting the sweetened beverage tax, we believe we should move forward cooperatively and in good faith with the County’s retail industry. As a result, the County has determined that withdrawing its petition for damages would serve the public interest.

How much of that $17 Million gets donated to Richard Boykin now?

  2. - blue dog dem - Tuesday, Aug 8, 17 @ 4:36 pm:

Is this the definition of ‘backpedal’?

  3. - Sue - Tuesday, Aug 8, 17 @ 4:39 pm:

Prekwinkel can read the polling numbers. This idiotic tax is sinking her faster then an iceberg sunk the titanic

  4. - Anon - Tuesday, Aug 8, 17 @ 4:40 pm:

This is worse than a backpedal. You can get whiplash from that kind of turn around. Finally, someone is giving her good legal advice.

Maybe trying to cut losses on SLAPP damages?

  7. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Tuesday, Aug 8, 17 @ 5:03 pm:

Hilarious! Maybe her protege Kim Foxx dissuaded her from this?

Regardless, I hope IRMA appeals and go Richard Boykin!

IRMA, I’m sure you will do your homework. Chuy Garcia voted for the tax, so he has damaged himself even in the Mayor’s race. Preckwinkle has damaged herself with middle class African Americans (hear the caller on the show). Reflexively backing someone like Boykin is not what you will do I’m sure. More analysis needed. Is there an African American elected from another arena? Or someone currently not in office who would make a great candidate? Or a recognized business figure who can play to going in and fixing County government? (Probably, unfortunately, racial issues will play big with this race.) There are also votes to be had from Dems who find her criminal justice policies scary. She needs to go.

Kinda hard to un-ring that bell. Trump-like behavior from the County Board President….cross her and you get sued.

    I’m with - Amalia -.

Boykin’s the best you’ll get. No one else will give up their seat for this & everyone else is either close to Preckwinkle or a machine creature.

Frankly if want Preckwinkle’s feet held to the fire, you’re lucky to have Boykin seriously considering this.

Maybe the law has been changed, but it used to be you could run for both Board Prez and a Commissioner seat at the same time.

She’s asking for a Boston Tea Party-type uprising

How on earth did she misread this whole thing so badly and then also handle it so poorly?

A tax is a tax is a tax. The president did not over step her authority to do what she thought was appropriate. Now she was wrong. Suing people that were excerising their rights to protest was a losing scenario from the beginning. The courts have sided with her. So let the people vote with their feet…or their cross county pocket books.

  15. - Arock - Wednesday, Aug 9, 17 @ 8:02 am:

This type of attitude toward people fighting for the right thing to happen shows how much out of touch people for big government have become. They think they have the right to come up with any tax they want to keep the power of big government in control. Just look what has happened in Chicago the last year and will continue to happen with increase in taxes and fees and they can’t provide the basic services that government is responsible for adequately.
