Illinois is different than other states

Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* This is just one of many, many reasons why it’s generally considered political suicide to bungle a racial issue in statewide politics here…

Not to mention that it’s probably best not to mess with Jesse White.

* Meanwhile, a commenter posted a link to this cartoon the other day

That’s from the far-right World Net Daily website, but it’s the same guy who drew the now infamous CPS/TIF cartoon for the Illinois Policy Institute. Yeah. No issues at all.

    Wow. Just wow. No words.

  2. - Gooner - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:33 pm:

Any issues about the intent of that cartoon have been resolved. The other note is that few things say “out of touch” like white people suggesting that “cracker” is an insult. Has anybody used that one since about 1975?

One note about the chart. Jim Ryan went from leading voter getting to losing? Times can change quickly.

  3. - Bruce Please - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:35 pm:

Wow that guy is a piece of work.

    Really making Illinois proud, Bruce.

===Jim Ryan went from leading voter getting to losing? Times can change quickly. ===

Especially when the governor with the same last name is facing federal indictment and it was the first midterm under a Republican president.

  5. - Gooner - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:44 pm:

Thanks. I blanked on George’s legal problems at that time.

My recollection was more that Blagojevich ran a pretty good campaign painting Ryan as far right due to his role in some DuPage prosecutions.

But yes, absolutely. I had forgotten that doing so was made much easier by George’s problems.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Alls fair in love and politics. Speaking of the goose, DVRs is cooked. See ya in the funny papers.

    And a bit sexist? http://www.jillstanek.com/assets_c/2009/08/cartoon%208-16%20eric%20allie%20intrigue%20larger-5739.html

  8. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:53 pm:

I hasn’t seen this cartoon before. Eric Allie uses a lot of violent imagry in his cartoons. Even before the current fiasco, IPI should have figured out he would be trouble.

  9. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:53 pm:

    ===made much easier by George’s problems===

Both of ‘em, Ryan and Bush.

  10. - Anonish - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:54 pm:

    Well, points for consistency. /s

  11. - Perrid - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:55 pm:

Evidently someone accused Black Panthers of voter intimidation? First I heard of it.

  12. - PJ - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:56 pm:

The sheer gall it must take to draw that cartoon in a world where Republicans are almost transparent about their efforts to suppress minority turnout is jaw-dropping

  13. - phocion - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 12:59 pm:

The events summarized in the cartoon depiction did in fact occur. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Black_Panther_Party_voter_intimidation_case
But let’s not talk about that. It makes some people feel uncomfortable.
Gee, Rich, what’s next? Are you going to say Theo van Gogh got what was coming to him?

  14. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:00 pm:

In regard to the artist, that settles that. There is no explaining it away.

  15. - Northsider - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:05 pm:

    Perrid @ 12:55:

In 2008, two black guys outside a Philadelphia polling station, claiming to be from the New Black Panther Party, freaked out Fox “News” and its fellow travelers.

You may not have heard about it because the incident, like the whole “voter fraud” chimera, is a double nothingburger.

  16. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:06 pm:

Why not list the last ten election cycles? Or would that detract from the narrative?

  17. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:07 pm:

Yeah, I kind of have the same problem with this as I do with “blue-eyed white Jesus.” Why in he world is it assumed that Lady Justice is white?

  18. - Mouthy - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:08 pm:

I believe there were only two Panthers at one polling station but FOX News made it seem like about a 100K across the land. The cartoon fits that narrative…

  19. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:17 pm:

I think a couple of you completely miss the point. You, and the advisors for Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump. I would advise those of you defending these cartoons to stay away from politics. You wouldn’t help any candidate.

  20. - Moist von Lipwig - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:19 pm:

I have to admit I don’t understand Eric Allie’s sense of humor sometimes.

Seems like there were a few toons from different artists about that Black Panther incident. One here from Michael Ramirez

  23. - Downers Delight - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:27 pm:

    @ Rich

Bush picked up 2 Senate seats and 8 House seats in his first midterm as the 9/11 attacks favored Republicans that year.

I agree wholeheartedly about the link to George Ryan causing major problems and suggest that O’Malley or Wood could have beaten Blago, who was not a strong candidate. Probably not, given the recession and budget situation, but the race would have been much closer.

  24. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:28 pm:

===Bush picked up 2 Senate seats and 8 House seats in his first midterm===

This is an Illinois blog. Stay on topic. It doesn’t matter how many seats he picked up in other states.

  25. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:45 pm:

it’s interesting to note how cannily Rauner played race issues in ‘14, often wrong-footing Quinn. His comms shop is demonstrably worse at this now, and frankly, it started before the Purge.

  26. - Downers Delight - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:48 pm:

The point was supposed to be that (I think) Bush wasn’t as big of a drag on Republicans here in Illinois in 2002 (based on my recollection as well as election results elsewhere, sorry if that seemed off topic - I was just trying to offer what I believe as proof). It was pre-Iraq War, so his hatred hadn’t ramped up to the levels we saw in later years. My second paragraph states that George Ryan was the biggest drag by far, followed by the proclaimed $5 billion budget deficit.

I agree with your assessment (from the 12:35 post) that a first midterm is usually difficult for the President’s party. I disagree it had as big of an effect as you reference in your 12:53 post.

  27. - Anonish - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:53 pm:

    @ Anon 1:06
Maybe only went back to 1998 because that is how far back the State Board of Elections has data on its site?

  28. - idk - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 1:54 pm:

The comments on Maze and Charles’ show this morning are super interesting. I know the House stood against the toon, but from what I’ve seen on social media it seems like a lot of people from all different racial backgrounds aren’t really on board w/ the “unambiguously racist” angle that Rahm is pushing, and that a few news stories have more than implied.

    Show in question: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10155336158820342&id=504680341

  29. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:27 pm:

Phocion, that’s quite a leap to accuse Rich of thinking “Theo Van Gogh got what was coming to him.”

Such a leap. Are you in training for the Olympics?

Or do you just mainline Fox news steroids straight into a vein all day long?

  30. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:30 pm:

    ==did in fact occur===

So, Holder was standing there with a Black Panther who called the Statue of Liberty a cracker? Sounds totally plausible.

  31. - tmfbitu - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:30 pm:

The politically correct term is Saltine American.

  32. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:41 pm:

    ==Statue of Liberty==

    FYI - I think it’s Lady Justice

  33. - phocion - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:43 pm:

Rich, please do not cherry pick what I said. The events SUMMARIZED. I know it can’t be easy for a cartoonist to put Holder in the same frame as the black panthers who he declined to prosecute for voter intimidation if it were real time, but I’d give him some artistic license. Speaking of which, since when do we get to decide to have the government try to shut down speech? Everyone thinks it’s great that Rahm and Mitchell used their office to try to shut down the IPI cartoon. And now they want the Governor to do the same. Odd. I usually don’t see many complaints of cartoons depicting African Americans if it’s a message with which one agrees with. Let’s be real. This is a ginned up crapfest that’s designed to shut down a message. And, yes, Wordsmith. You can try to attack me all you want. The fact is it’s a very short rope from claiming a political cartoon is racist to inciting violence against the messenger. Whether it’s Theo or the martyred satirists at Charlie Hebdo, we should uphold freedom of speech over political correctness. Civic suicide is the alternative.

  35. - RIJ - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:45 pm:

“Cracker” is outdated? Then my use of “honkey” really dates me!

I read up on “honkey,” and found it interesting that the etymology traces back to “bohunk,” an derogatory term for immigrants from Bohemia, used by other whites.

Language and how it changes is a fascinating thing. Remember that know there is a synonym for “cheap” we no longer use because it simply sounds racist.

(”Cracker” referred in the 1780s to men that Great Britain shipped to the southern penal colonies. Again, it originated as a White to White class oriented pejorative. It acquired additional meanings over time, but I don’t have time for a full language lesson.)

Language is slippery, as politicians have used to their advantage (and salespeople and con artists. After all, if the meaning of “is” can become a debate…

  36. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:48 pm:

== to have the government try to shut down speech==

Is someone throwing them in jail? Who’s shutting down their free speech? Calling it out and criticizing it isn’t shutting it down. And it’s also “free speech” to try and shout down a message.

== I usually don’t see many complaints of cartoons depicting African Americans if it’s a message with which one agrees with==

Stop being a victim. These aren’t simply cartoons with African Americans in them. They are cartoons with obvious racial overtones. If you want to defend them that’s fine. But don’t try and sidestep the racism involved with the cartoons. Own up to the message and defend it.

  37. - RIJ - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 2:54 pm:

Yes, multiple degrees in English, and I wrote “know” instead of now. I’m a poor speller heavily reliant on spell check. OW will sympathize.

  38. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 3:01 pm:

    Phocion, harrumph, harrumph.

IPI can exercise their freedom of speech by publishing whatever they want. And others can exercise their freedom of speech by calling it racist.

And you’re free to say that there’s a “short rope” (whatever that means; you’re free to say it) between criticizing an IPI cartoon and the slaughter at Charlie Hebdo, and I’m free to say that you’re full of stuff.

    See how that works?

  39. - IllinoisBoi - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 3:45 pm:

==we should uphold freedom of speech over political correctness==

…And here I was thinking, fool that I am, that even “politically correct” speech is a species of “free speech.”

  40. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 3:49 pm:

IB, some of the whiners here believe “freedom of speech” means “freedom from criticism.”

  41. - Veil of Ignorance - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 4:02 pm:

I was actually a little unsure about the first IPI cartoon and honestly didn’t get chance to really think about it, but this 2nd one seems to confirm a pattern. Yikes.

  42. - Robert the 1st - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 4:04 pm:

    Moist von Lipwig-

    How about a not-safe-for-work warning next time…

  43. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 4:28 pm:

==I read up on “honkey,” and found it interesting that the etymology traces back to “bohunk,” an derogatory term for immigrants from Bohemia, used by other whites.==

Weird, I thought it was created by George Jefferson. (Hat-tip to Dave Chappelle)

  44. - Molly Maguire - Wednesday, Aug 23, 17 @ 4:38 pm:

I see you, Mr. Allie. I see you, IPI. I see you Rauner. I see you Maze Jackson.
