Kennedy, Pritzker, Biss say Sen. Silverstein should resign

Tuesday, Nov 7, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I told subscribers about these developments earlier today, but it’s now getting out into the twittersphere, so let’s talk about it…

JB Pritzker’s campaign told me yesterday that the candidate believes Silverstein should resign.

I would agree, especially if Silverstein propositioned a woman for sex, touched her inappropriately, or assaulted her — all things that unnamed other legislators and lobbyists have been accused of.

    LOL
    A Kennedy is saying this.

  3. - PJ - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 1:57 pm:

===Silverstein is still entitled to due process is he not?===

No, because this isn’t a court. They’re not calling for him to be prosecuted or convicted or thrown out of the legislature. They’re calling for him to make the entirely voluntary decision to step down from his elected post.

Vanilla Man, shame on you. Chris could be an outlier of the family.

    Everybody says “Ira who?”

    Can happen that quickly.

  6. - blue dog dem - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:10 pm:

Don’t know specifics, but when did jury verdict come in?

  7. - Just Observing - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:12 pm:

I’m not that big of a fan of Ira Silverstein — but I also don’t think he should resign. I think what he did was certainly immoral considering he’s married, arguably unprofessional, but I don’t think he sexually harassed her — it seemed very mutual. But I guess in this (social) media frenzied world, Pritzker, Kennedy, and Biss have no choice to say otherwise.

  8. - Just Me - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:15 pm:

They should be prepared to ask for many more resignations once the other accusations start to become public.

  9. - blue dog dem - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:18 pm:

If accused, is one automatically guilty?

  10. - Gooner - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:20 pm:

Nobody that I knew can stand Sen. Silverstein or his wife.

While I’m not calling the accusations into question, there does seem to be a lot of glee that the first to take a fall for this is one of the people most would like to see take a fall for anything.

  11. - PJ - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:21 pm:

===If accused, is one automatically guilty?===

The messages are out there. He admitted he sent them. It’s totally fair game for the candidates to look and them and, when asked, say that they think he should resign. You can disagree with that, but this isn’t about innocent or guilty. They’re not calling for him to be thrown in jail.

  12. - Texas Red - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:23 pm:

As the only JD in this group; I guess Pritzker doesn’t think much about the rule of law and innocent till proven guilty.

  13. - Dr. M - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:28 pm:

Silverstein might want to step down to avoid further embarrassment to his family, but until a formal investigation has found him guilty of (something), I think the Gov candidates should tread tactfully.

Adjudicating allegations of sexual harassment, assault, or misconduct isn’t up to the court of public opinion (or at least it shouldn’t be). Are the candidates telling us we should disperse Silverstein’s punishment because we’ve heard his awkward voicemail and read some out of context fb message banter? I’d rather hear their ideas for implementing better processes for adjudicating such allegations…

  14. - anon - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

@TexasRed it’s impressive that you checked everyone’s anonymous identity with the bar

  15. - PJ - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:05 pm:

===As the only JD in this group===

Someone needs to phone the Texas bar association and inform them one of their attorneys doesn’t understand the difference between expressing an opinion that someone should take a voluntary action (resignation) and calling for arrest and prosecution.

  16. - Texas Red - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:13 pm:

The JD is Pritzker’s …as in he’s the only attorney among the Dem candidates suggesting Silverstein should step down. My point is that an officer of court might have more respect for the rule of law

  17. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:16 pm:

–As the only JD in this group; I guess Pritzker doesn’t think much about the rule of law and innocent till proven guilty. –

What laws are you talking about? Have some criminal charges been filed?

What’s JD stand for in your context? Juvenile Delinquent? Just Dizzy?

  18. - Gooner - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

Texas Red, good lawyers never assume.

I’ve got one of the J.D.s too, and I don’t the slightest problem with J.B.’s conduct.

He can say what he wants. Welcome to America. That’s the way we do things.

  19. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

Perhaps Texas Red left a participle dangling and meant to say “Pritzker should know as the only JD in this group…”

    Alternatively, he/she is a fool.

  20. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 3:40 pm:

==As the only JD in this group;==

What’s this thing up on my wall, then?

==I guess Pritzker doesn’t think much about the rule of law and innocent till proven guilty.==

I guess you don’t, since you think a criminal conviction must precede a voluntary resignation.

  21. - Responsa - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 4:26 pm:

I din’t think any of the candidates needed to or should have weighed in. When asked by a reporter a good answer would have been, “I have my own opinions on the matter but quite honestly I think Sen. Silverstein is the only one who can decide what is the right thing for him to do.”

  22. - Regular democrat - Tuesday, Nov 7, 17 @ 7:22 pm:

There will be a huge outpouring of rabbis comi g to his aid real soon u can write the script from there
