Bost victimized by fake news on prayer cards
Wednesday, Feb 21, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * Don’t just skim the caption, read it…
The prayer cards were collected a year ago. Bost delivered them to the White House ten months ago. He and President Trump took a photo together. The White House finally got around to sending Bost the pic the other day, which he then posted on Facebook. * But this false story has been circulated everywhere in the past few days…
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been sent that link. It’s totally false. * A Reddit post from a couple of days ago entitled “Rep Mike Bost delivers a bag of ‘thoughts and prayers’ to help with the Florida shooting” has produced over 1500 comments. And Raw Story got into the act with a story entitled “Constituents hammer GOP lawmaker for giving Trump a big bag of ‘prayer cards’ after school shooting.” * If you see something this insane posted on social media, take a few seconds to see if it’s true before launching into your own tirade or forwarding it to your friends.

Really dissapointing to see how much this blew up. Especially on reddit. Everyone was so willing to call Bost and Trump terrible and sickening names. I’d love for this to be clarified and straightened out.
- JohnnyPyleDriver - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:30 am:
I notice you went with the caption Mike Bost posted yesterday and not the one he had up from February 16th UNTIL yesterday, which simply read:
“Tracy and other ladies from Southern Illinois collected prayer cards, which I hand delivered to President Donald J. Trump!”
BOST posted that the day after the shooting. He’s the reason for the confusion

This is the type of thing that the Russian trolls and bots have been doing. I wonder if this specific instance can be traced back to Russian trolls.

- Fixer - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:35 am:
Rich, the original caption didn’t have anything regarding the time frame for when this was done. Not trying to excuse the vitriol in the comments on FB or Reddit, but his social media person should have include that information from the get go.
- BostConstituent - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:36 am:
Bost posted that picture the day after the shooting with this caption: “Tracy and other ladies from Southern Illinois collected prayer cards, which I hand delivered to President Donald J. Trump!”
The caption here at CapFax was added yesterday. You can view the edit history on Mike Bost’s facebook Page for yourself. If you wanna fault people for not seeing the green leaves on the trees, fine I guess, but to spin this as Bost being victimized is a long stretch. He created the confusion with his ill timed post
- Mouthy - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:41 am:
Rep Bost will be in my thoughts and prayers..
- Huh? - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:42 am:
The timing of the Facebook post makes it appear to be true. Given the recent news, Bost should have known better than to post the picture.
- Ahoy! - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:43 am:
I wish there would be a snopes app that filtered out this kind of stuff on social media.
Although on this Boost is more of a thoughts and prayers kind of guy and less of a man of action.

The only individual Democrats seem to hate more than Trump these days is God. Good plan.

If you believe that, you are probably drinking Russian bot-aid.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:47 am:
Bost is a big boy to the ways of all media. That Bad Opera he performed on the House floor generated the “fake news” (i.e. that it was spontaneous outrage, and not planned self-promotion) that made him.
He should have been smart enough to explain the pic clearly when he first posted it, given the timing.
I’m not familiar with the tradition. What’s the significance of gifting a ziploc bag of prayer cards?
I only pick them up at funerals. Are those all from funerals? What’s the point being made that they’re smiling about?

What? On a topic such as this you decide to post garbage like that?
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:53 am:
Chris, maybe you should leave God out of your chronic whiny victim schtick.

Only to people who can’t be bothered to read and instead insist on the usual knee jerk hysterical reactions that is par for the course on Facebook.
It clearly states “In April of last year”
- JohnnyPD - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:56 am:
Demoralized- that caption was added yesterday. Go check the edit history on his Facebook page to see the original caption which surely gives the impression it was in re: the Florida shooting
- Liandro - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 11:59 am:
The outrage machine has been running strong in all camps lately. Facebook can be the worst; friends on all sides of the spectrum post easily debunked nonsense. Ugh.
- Amalia - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 12:00 pm:
I don’t care when he collected and delivered the cards, Bost is with Trump, who is a serial abuser of women, and someone who will not truly call out Russia for attacking our country. A photo with Trump is not something to be proud of.
- King Louis XVI - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 12:08 pm:
Thoughts and prayers to Rep. Bost.

Giving prayer cards to the Beast-Child is a bad idea at any time.

As a Democrat who believes in the Holy Trinity, I consider it blasphemous to refer to G-d as an “individual.”
- Highland IL - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 12:12 pm:
Shimkus’ posting from that day was also not well thought out.

There are too many gullible people on all sides and FB makes it way too easy to expose yourself as an idiot. If you care about what people think of you, stop sharing unverified garbage.
I’m sending my thoughts and prayers to the dog that Mike Bost shot and killed.
See? You don’t need to make stuff up about Bost if you want to stick it to him with the truth. Somebody could make a really effective and viral meme just off that one incident. Lord knows people care more about how dogs are treated than people these days.
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 12:18 pm:
Also, Rep. Bost: Roland Burris called. He wants his vest back.
- Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 12:18 pm:
Maybe people who don’t understand how social media works should just stay off it.

It was a beagle. Locked in a pen. On someone else’s property.
Not exactly American B-A material.

On its face delivering a bag o prayers seems weird regardless of the occasion.

And ignorant political hacks who wear their alleged Christianity on a sleeve while having no concept of the Trinity, as was pointed out.
- Swift - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 1:47 pm:
Wait, people don’t care about facts? I’m shocked. I’m less shocked it appears to take almost a year to photoshop Trump.
Also, I believe prayers should not be kept in a Ziploc bag, a nice basket with a ribbon is more appropriate, or perhaps an ornamental bird cage. If Bost deserves any criticism it should be based on his prayer storage procedures.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 21, 18 @ 1:55 pm:
Phony social media, I can speak to that, lol
To the Post,
People want to read, what they want things to say…
Fake news buys into that premise perfectly.
“I want to read how callous someone, I may not like, is.”
The reason we see less bipartisanship and respect is because a select few want to promote and push what can divide us.
That’s the bots goal, isn’t it? Divide in thought where division can exist.
On “the tweeter” and “the Facebook”… or the “snapped chatter” or “the instant gram”… it’s others’ chance to find the ways to divide, under the guise of “free speech” as phony as a fake Facebook page.
I try to be smart when checking, doesn’t mean that it’s a one-stop process. Takes work. “If your mother says she loves you… “ work.

The outrage against Mike Bost for presenting prayers to Donald Trump just bolsters him here in God’s country. I saw he was already fundraising off of this liberal attack on Christianity. It’ll work

–I saw he was already fundraising off of this liberal attack on Christianity.–
Questioning Bost is an attack on Christianity? Wow, he’s big heat. First he was Moses, now he’s Paul?
Well, as long as you can raise funds on it….
