Rauner calls Madigan “a unified force of bad, of evil”

Friday, Mar 16, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Quincy Herald-Whig

“This guy Pritzker, he’s Madigan’s handpicked candidate,” Rauner said. “I know this guy. He’s done a lot of bad stuff. And I am going to blow him up and take him down in November. You watch.”

Rauner expressed confidence not only in his ability to win re-election but to see Republicans statewide capture enough House seats to gain a Republican majority and overthrow Madigan, whom Rauner characterized as “a unified force of bad, of evil” for the Democrats who control the General Assembly.

“We are going to blow the Democrats away, turning out the vote and taking Madigan and his corrupt machine down in November and putting a better future for our children and our grandchildren,” Rauner said.

“We’ve got an incredible opportunity. This is the chance of a lifetime. This election will determine the future of the state,” he said. “What’s at stake in November? Control of the (electoral) map. Control of the redistricting after the 2020 census. We have got to hold the governorship to have a voice against Madigan in the remap.”

“We are going to blow the Democrats away.” And then, “We have got to hold the governorship to have a voice against Madigan in the remap.”

That’s kinda contradictory, isn’t it? If he’s saying he’ll take away Madigan’s majority, then why bother saying seconds later that he needs to be reelected to fight Madigan’s new map?

Not really, he’s not predicting a win in the Senate is he?

… then Rauner should say the Cullerton map.

  6. - SSL - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:29 pm:

Assuming Pritzker wins the primary, Rauner’s only hope will be to keep disenfranchised Kennedy and Biss voters on the sidelines in the general. Not sure how he does that to any great extent. He keeps saying he will blow Pritzker up, and the only way that happens is if there are more tape snippets that would alienate a large group.

Rauner says a lot of things, so one never knows. If it comes down to Pritzker and Rauner, the state is in trouble regardless.

  7. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:31 pm:

“then Rauner should say the Cullerton map.”

Not really, Senator Cullerton is subservient to Speaker Madigan who controls the Democratic party in Illinois.

Unless you can name one instance since 2009 when the Senator has prevailed at anything over the objections of the Spealer.

Tough talk for a guy of wealth and privilege. He just doesn’t get it. You need votes in the house and the senate. Until you have the votes, you can’t impose your will. Someday, he’ll realize what an epic failure he was. He had an opportunity to accomplish some things but rode his Harley into Springfield and told everybody that would do anything he demanded. Oops, didn’t work.

  9. - Real - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

Forget a tape. The question is do you want a Governor that will bring progress and work for the people or one that will bring gridlock and destruction in his fight against workers?

He’s not a quick learner when it comes to this politics stuff, is he?

He is the only person in the state who thinks it’s possible for Republicans to win a majority in the Illinois House.

What color is the sky in Rauner’s world?

    Tragic.

    On Tuesday
Let the Scarecrow accidentally dump water across Rauner’s face, let ILGOP watch Bruce melt, then watch Lucky Pierre pick up Rauner’s broom and hand it to Ives.

  16. - VanillaMan - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:40 pm:

It sounds like his mask slipped.
Instead of shaking up Slringfield, Bruce wants to blow it up.

  19. - RIJ - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:44 pm:

Rauner certainly has an obsessive personality, doesn’t he? A shrill Trump lite.

  20. - SSL - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:44 pm:

= do you want a governor that will bring progress and work for the people=

That sounds good to me, but who is this magical candidate you speak of? Certainly it isn’t JB, who has spoken of more free healthcare and solving the opiod problem, while vaguely referring to the wealthy paying their fair share, even though he won’t tax retirement income.

JB doesn’t have a plan. Just speaks in generalities to appease as many as he can. I don’t see any depth at all. He’s not Rauner, nor is he a solution to what ails this state. You’ll be here in 5 years talking about the same issues.

What secret plan is Rauner going to use next year to get Madigan to capitulate? And, why hasn’t he unleashed this plan yet?

  26. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

Rauner will hold the state hostage for a Raunerite map.

It will crush what’s left of social services.

It will finally close a university or maybe 2

    Rauner will hurt Illinois.

I’ve seen this movie before. It’s about Raunerism or pain. No in between.

So sick of hearing anti-madigan propaganda, I’m actually start to like the guy.

Too bad Democrats love to hamstring themselves. Heard lots of them bash the speaker as well. How does that not help the Republicans?

  32. - dbk - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 1:16 pm:

I believe the gov’s mental health will benefit from losing the November election. Then he can move to the wide-open spaces of Montana, far, far away from you-know-who.

Think of it as therapeutic, both for the gov and for 13,000,000 beleaguered Illinoisans.

  33. - DeseDemDose - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 1:34 pm:

Madigan has played the unhinged Rauner like a fiddle. On top of it, most voters don’t even no who the hell Madigan is.

  35. - Demoralized - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 1:37 pm:

While I understand the Governor’s continual attacking of Madigan because he has nothing else to run on, I don’t get his inability to understand that even if Madigan goes away he’s not all of a sudden going to get to implement any of the policies he wants to implement.

  36. - Streator Curmudgeon - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 1:38 pm:

No, Hitler was evil. Stalin was evil. Mao was evil.

    Madigan is merely powerful.

“I don’t get his inability to understand that even if Madigan goes away he’s not all of a sudden going to get to implement any of the policies he wants to implement.”

I completely agree. He might get someone who’s less amenable to conservative interests. And that blows up any narrative that Rauner is pushing about Madigan stopping him, no pun intended.

  38. - JS Mill - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 2:25 pm:

Why does Rauner think a new speaker of the house (Democratic or repub) would give him permission to be governor? Everyone already knows he is not in charge.

  39. - Pundent - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 2:49 pm:

It sounds to me like Rauner is conceding that Madigan will still be speaker of the house come November. And it’s hard to envision this red wave that he suggests is coming. So assuming that he is re-elected what would be different?

  40. - GOP Extremist - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 2:55 pm:

Rauner is sounding awfully “Presidential” lately, in the most current sense of the word, that is.

  41. - zatoichi - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

Get the movie preview voice guy, some booming music, lots of political flash cuts, drone over Capitol, some flag shots and this text:

“This guy Pritzker, he’s Madigan’s handpicked candidate,” Rauner said. “I know this guy. He’s done a lot of bad stuff. And I am going to blow him up and take him down in November. You watch.”

Oldman, Denzel, Stallone, Arnold, Eastwood, Hackman. There is a complete movie.

  42. - don the legend - Friday, Mar 16, 18 @ 3:16 pm:

It’s easy to picture Rauner sitting a dimly lit room with his head bobbing and him muttering Madigan, Madigan Madigan.

Madigan needs to introduce a bill to tax hallucinagenic drugs. With the amount Rauner seems to be on, the State could balance the budget. /s?
