After ugly split, Breen is back on board with Rauner

Wednesday, Mar 21, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) last year after Gov. Rauner signed HB40

In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him.

* Peter Breen today…

The people have spoken. They gave Gov. Bruce Rauner the edge. Gov. Rauner stated in the media that he’s heard the message, and I believe he has. Gov. Rauner is our party’s nominee, and I support him 100%. The Madigan machine would love nothing more than a rubber stamp like J.B. Pritzker in the governor’s mansion—Illinois can’t afford that

Lol, he probably needs to see a doctor for his whiplash.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

Turns out, Breen is a phony?

===In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him.===

So… you get enough votes. You can lie to Breen and Cardinal Cupich?

    That’s really great to know.

Don’t say your a character person then decide later you’re not.

    Pathetic.

“I can’t trust what he says.”
“He says you can trust him.”
“Oh, then I can trust him.”

Ok, Breen, but remember, Gov. Gaslight doesn’t want any f@%&!%$ surprises.

  5. - Roman - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:12 pm:

Spoken like a candidate who knows he’ll be targeted by the Dems in a district Hillary carried. He might not like Rauner, but he likes his cash.

  6. - truth - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:14 pm:

Probably realizes he’s gonna need some of that Rauner cash to fend off Terry Cosgrove in November.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:21 pm:

Breen woulda been better off holding his phony righteous indignation and just did what he was told…

… which is exactly who he is what he will do from now on.

    “I’m a conservative until I’m not… on principle”

Breen is no better than those he condemned.

    Some have character… some…

  8. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:24 pm:

Isn’t he part of Jim Durkin’s leadership team? Looks like he wants to keep that extra $tipend.

    Lol.

  9. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:29 pm:

So long Thomas More, hello Flipper.

  10. - DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:32 pm:

Even the French army held out for a week

  11. - A guy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:38 pm:

The alternative is….what? Jeanne Ives likely has done her party a great service in serving up a dish of humility that even this Governor couldn’t deny. The sooner they all get back together as an effective and focused caucus, the better.

This is a leader leading. If the Governor is smart, and whoever the staff of the season are right now are smart, they’ll seize on the opportunity to put Humpty back together again.

He can win his district without the Rauner cash. He’s already proven that. Cosgrove isn’t a new character there either.

  12. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:43 pm:

    ===This is a leader leading.===

Lol. This is a politician with his finger to the wind trying to find out which way the parade is headed so he can try to stay in front of it instead of being trampled by it.

This is the opposite of leading. This is following.

  14. - Flat Bed Ford - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:49 pm:

Breen has a big fight on his hands come November and clearly needs the Raunerbucks. Cash wins out over integrity. Perhaps a visit with the Cardinal Rep Breen? Penance and absolution for the righteous right.

  15. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:51 pm:

    –The alternative is….what?–

Not writing checks your tukkus can’t cover?

His previous position was unambiguous, a real Paul Scofeld monologue. Now he’s just another mushroom stroking the boss.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:51 pm:

    ===This is a leader leading.===

Breen is a phony. I guess if Rauner is a phony and some think he’s a leader, why not Breen?

There is nothing about Breen that speaks to leadership or leading or being a person of principle.

Breen is no better than when he chastised Rauner and now Breen is back where he was, a total lackey of Rauner, letting Rauner dictate his “core” because his righteous indignation made him think he has principles, unlike Rauner.

Well, now we know different. Breen told us all so.

  17. - Norseman - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:53 pm:

Breen is simply being consistent with his and most GOP politicians’ philosophy. Follow the money.

  18. - m - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:56 pm:

=Well, now we know different. Breen told us all so.=

Hope you save some venom for Biss and Kennedy when they support Pritzker.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

===Hope you save some venom for Biss and Kennedy when they support Pritzker.===

When Biss and/or Kennedy decide to support, then pull that support with righteous indignation, then weasel their way back to support… call me.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:01 pm:

    Actually, I shoulda known better.

Breen never left that leadership spot.

Breen, so righteous, but, “I’ll stay in my spot and bend my core beliefs”.

    Breen has no worries now.

Rauner’s EFTs will be arriving again soon.

  21. - jimk849 - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:06 pm:

Something new, this is proof you can change your dna at will. Even core beliefs.

  22. - Norseman - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:07 pm:

=== Hope you save some venom for Biss and Kennedy when they support Pritzker. ===

Apples and oranges. Breen’s pronouncement wasn’t within the context of an election campaign. He lost his cool after the HB 40 sig. Ives’ candidacy came later.

In the overall scheme of things, his hypocrisy doesn’t change anything. Breen is just doing what politicians do.

  23. - A guy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:08 pm:

==There is nothing about Breen that speaks to leadership or leading or being a person of principle.===

    You have no idea.

==His previous position was unambiguous, a real Paul Scofeld monologue.==

And he was as loyal a supporter to Rep. Ives as he could be. She fell short of victory. He’s supporting the winner of the primary and the Republican nominee. That’s suddenly novel?

Healing is a funny thing, isn’t it. You’re wounded, should you wait a week, a month, or a year to start healing or as soon as possible? He chastised the Gov in the strongest possible way. Supported his opponent enthusiastically and fully. The voters spoke. I’m sure he hopes with every shred of his being that the Gov got the message as he said he did. The sooner they get back together as a party, the longer they have to bring a united fight to the other side. This ain’t brain surgery.

For all the chat about purity tests around here, there sure is a lot of hypocrisy. Breen is a very popular guy on the homefront.

  24. - King Louis XVI - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:14 pm:

–Breen is a very popular guy on the homefront.–

    No he is not.

His legal crusades have taken him away from his district and has strayed from his voters.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:18 pm:

===The voters spoke. I’m sure he hopes with every shred of his being that the Gov got the message as he said he did===

    LOL

So his core beliefs are there just to send a message?

That’s more pathetic than I thought.

“My righteous indignation will only continue… if Ives wins.., then disregard my calling out Rauner’s character”

Breen is your garden variety politican, no better than who he thinks he’s so much better than, with a phony conservative bend that bends to Rauner’s dollars.

===The sooner they get back together as a party, the longer they have to bring a united fight to the other side. This ain’t brain surgery.===

Back to supporting Rauner - A Guy -?

===For all the chat about purity tests around here, there sure is a lot of hypocrisy.===

    Nah.

I can turn the other cheek. I don’t need lectures about core beliefs as a reason to abandon, but now it’s cool, my core will get over it.

Either Breen stands for what he thinks, as he lectures and points, or he’s no better than those he feels need his lecturing

    Leaders don’t do that.

===Breen is a very popular guy on the homefront.===

    Is popularity a core belief?

  26. - theCardinal - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:20 pm:

Wow GOP attempt unity something of an anomaly…Remember the ole days when the day after primary breakfast was held in the loop?

  27. - Baggs McCoy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:30 pm:

    OW,

The only way for the Republicans in this state to have any relevancy is to keep the Mansion and hope for a coin flip win to draw the map. They certainly are not going to ride a Proft insurgency. To gain the map is to try and gain seats. With seats you are closer to moving your agenda. You obviously know this. Breen knows this. A fractured republican party from now until November means they stay in the desert for decades.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 3:37 pm:

Raunerism and a Raunerite map isn’t a Republican ideal.

What do you think will happen?

History shows, Rauner will create a crisis, hold hostage a state, so now we are going to empower Rauner, yet again, bending Republican ideals because Raunerbucks are more important?

    Ok.

Then that makes Breen an utter fool that has no core but thinks his importants relies on telling people his core beliefs are important until they aren’t… or Breen is a phony and now we see his phoniness on full display… until he decides to lecture again about core beliefs.

Geez, Louise, even Oberweis knew better.

Oberweis was the point person against SSM, tried to dismiss Pat Brady because if it, then HB40 is signed, “we disagree, but”

Breen is who he is now. His next speech about character should be a laugh riot.

  29. - Osborne Smith III - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 4:13 pm:

In other words, Breen has no spine?

  30. - Leigh John-Ella - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 4:17 pm:

After all the turmoil, all the ups and downs, in the end, Peter Breen is keeping his baby.

  31. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 7:54 pm:

If you choose to appropriate the legacy of Thomas More, who put faith before king and lost his head over it, maybe you can stand up to Bruce Rauner on abortion and forego the floor leader chump change.

If not, who are your kidding?

  32. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 22, 18 @ 7:54 am:

Rep. Breen a very popular in his district and very visible there. Extremely well liked. I live there so I know.

===Rep. Breen a very popular in his district and very visible there. Extremely well liked.===

You can be well liked… and lack credibility and have your character questioned as it pertains to having righteous indignation and be no different than those you chastise.

    Happens all the time.

  34. - A guy - Thursday, Mar 22, 18 @ 9:47 am:

Willy, I really have no idea what kind of party would please you. If you’re with Leader Durkin, all day, every day, as you have said…Breen did the Leader a huge favor yesterday by stating that now the primary is over, he’s on board with the result and the party going forward. I doubt that Rep. Breen’s personal feelings toward the Governor have changed one iota. The only way that could happen is if the Governor demonstrates through actions and deeds (not words, we’ve been down that road), that he’s ready to sync up with the membership of his party in the caucuses. You seem to set the bar of respect at “keep working against the top of your ticket”. That’s contrary to everything a party exists for. He’s our nominee.

You asked if I’m supporting Rauner now? Over Pritzker? Absolutely. Jeanne Ives stated she’ll vote for him after a very difficult race. I’d expect every Democrat to support their nominee as well. Peter Breen will continue to hold the Governor accountable. I’m not certain that the Governor will be as gracious as the Representative. Check the records though. The Governor has not been a huge contributor to Breen. It’s minuscule in fact. He’s not chasing Rauner money. And, he’s raised more and given more in dues than he’s ever received from the party.
He’s a party guy and his led for his Leader. Go ask him. November is tough no matter what for the GOP. Your approach would make it even tougher. I’m not thrilled with our party’s choice for Governor, but I’m not going to resist the voters who made a choice. There are plenty of great GOP people on the ballot I’m excited to support.

What are you running for and what position to you hold? OR are you just the Arbiter of everyone else’s character? Good Grief.
