Gov. Rauner dodges questions about his “reputation for not telling the truth”

Wednesday, Apr 11, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner was asked yesterday by Bernie Schoenburg about recent allegations made by Sen. Sam McCann regarding the 2015 AFSCME arbitration bill vote

He said Rauner suggested he skip the vote if he wouldn’t vote no, but made it clear that there was “one way to make him angry,” which would be a “yes” vote.

“And he looked at me, and said, ‘I’ll destroy you and your family if you go through with this,’” McCann said.

“No, I did not say that,” Rauner told Bernie with a laugh. Schoenburg asked if McCann was lying. “There’s a lot of wild stuff goes on in politics, I’ll say that,” Rauner replied.

* Dave Dahl then jumped in

Dahl: Speaking of that. House Bill 40, Ives and Madigan are together and Swedish grandparents. I mean, you’ve got a reputation for not telling the truth. [Rauner laughs.] How can people cast a vote for you with all that stacked up against you?

Rauner: I’ve fought hard for the people of Illinois to create a better future. We need to grow more jobs, we need to bring down our property taxes, we need integrity in government with term limits. I’m fightin’ for the people and a better future for our people and our children and grandchildren…

Dahl: But what about being a man of your word? You’re taking on water there.

Rauner: People know that I’m a fighter on principles that will make us a better future. Lower taxes, more jobs and integrity in government through term limits.

* Meanwhile, here’s a fun little snippet that came in over the transom. It’s from Gov. Rauner’s speech last night to the Annual Innovations in Construction, Asphalt, and Transportation Conference in Peoria

* Transcript

And my kids were leavin’ Illinois. I’ve got six kids, they were leavin’ Illinois. I said ‘This is ridiculous.’ And my partners in my bidness said, ‘Bruce we gotta get out of here, we gotta leave.’ And I said: ‘I ain’t not leaving Illinois. I was born here. I’ve lived here my whole life. I’m not gonna run away. We’re gonna fix this, and that’s why I decided to run for governor.’

“I ain’t not leaving Illinois.” Man, does that Dartmouth/Harvard grad love talking like a hillbilly. Not to mention that it’s a double negative. Maybe those Italy reports were true? /snark

So McCann is telling the truth?

Kinda like when the Secretary of State never really denied what he called the President.

    That’s right. Exactly right.

===Tim Schneider is “head of the Rauner Party, not the Illinois Republican Party”===

    It’s Raunerite Party, Representative.

    Raunerite. Party.

Pathetic; He can’t even tell the truth when he is told they already know the answer. He reverts to talking points, and changes narrative. Most real Republicans can not vote for this guy. He is just to embarrassing. Time for a new face in the Governor’s office.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 11, 18 @ 1:16 pm:

The dishonesty that IS the Bruce Rauner brand is predicated that he thinks the people of Illinois are so … that whatever he (Bruce) says, they’ll believe it to be true.

    That or…

“I can fib. No one cares.”

Either way, it’s who Rauner is, costumes and all.

Why does Rauner think he can get away with his… stylings?

    As @StatehouseChick says… “Simple”

Let’s revisit those words of Mr. Breen…

===In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him.===

… and yet… today Mr. Breen supports Bruce Rauner.

Rep. McSweeney, who isn’t a phony, isn’t swayed.

So… Rauner will keep this up, because those like Mr. Breen, and their righteous indignation “always” come back from their principles.

    Right now,

    Rauner has no true constituency.

Rauner wants Independents, Democrats, even Republicans “tired of the status quo”

In reality, having no constituency and dodging Trump is far better than being “Trump’s favorite” anything.

Why give Rauner any semblance of a constituency… other than those like Mr. Breen.

Do to not merely a lack of accomplishments, but abject failure Rauner was facing a difficult re-election fight. Signing SB 40 sunk any hope he had to be successful. The true believers have turned their back upon him.

Dems are letting Rauner form the campaign of JB being Madigan’s handpicked candidate… JB offers a weak response to Rauner on the national guard issue telling Rauner to stand up to Trump. Labeling Rauner as Trumps fav would do a lot more damage and not be as dull as saying stand up to Trump.

Macro messaging to a micro response.

I hear ya. I’ve said “no quarter” myself many times…

I also realize Rauner can’t get his act together right now.

It’s best to let your opponent in the short term twist in the wind on their own.

Either way, there isn’t a wrong answer, Rauner is struggling with honesty and a constituency. Two things winnng campaigns have.

That was the governor’s speech at ICAT?!

    That’s an engineering conference.

It’s hosted by Bradley University’s engineering department.

    Here’s the lineup of speakers:

The real Trump supporters would already know Rauner is not Trumps fav. The label is to further turn off and dems or independent voter that might vote for Rauner over JB

  43. - Chris Widger - Wednesday, Apr 11, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

It just doesn’t matter what either campaign does. It’s math. Rauner cannot win because of Trump’s victory in 2016, which has caused a surge of Democratic interest. Every other factor (Democratic intransigence causing a budget crisis and causing even the popular elements of the Turnaround Agenda to die off; demographics evolving in this country in a way that will continue to favor liberal voting; Rauner’s inability or unwillingness to pursue a consistent path and to take small victories where available) all militate a massive Democratic victory this November.

Analyzing the campaign in any detail is like shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic, which is a particularly apt analogy because both parties generally support policies ensuring the state’s long-term crash and ruin.

  44. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 11, 18 @ 2:37 pm:

    (Sigh)

You think only the Trump supporters know Rauner’s Trunp status?

The same way the Trump supporters know, others know too.

I get your take, but why help Rauner?

Let Rauner twist… in April… with no constituency, low conservative support, and Ives letting her wounds to Rauner fester?

There’s time. This specific moment, it ain’t time.

  45. - Stumpy's bunker - Wednesday, Apr 11, 18 @ 2:39 pm:

So, are we to believe McCann was threatened?

I wish Rep’s Raymond Poe, Rich Brauer and Wayne Rosenthal were in a position to be honest at no expense to themselves: did they have to choose between the glue factory or greener pastures? Was the governor afraid they would represent their “union” constituency?

I believe the real answer to this would lend credibility to McCann’s claims.

The governor wants Governor’s representatives, not State representatives. This…This…is a subversion of the democratic process.

I find it very insulting - this abasement of the language doesn’t show respect for the voters you think you’re courting (I’m not sure who exactly he’s courting these days), it’s just embarrassing.

Also, “I ain’t not leaving Illinois”, syntactically, is a double negative - therefore, an affirmative = “I’m leaving Illinois.”

    Grrr.

==Just curious if you still feel that way or if over the last few weeks Munger made up less ground than you expected?===

Since we both (I dunno really about you, but I definitely know for a fact I …definitely don’t) have polls, publicly seen or discussed polls, and with Munger down 8 with 19% undecided, the silence in both camps right now makes me want to think had both sprinted away beyond what a POTUS universe could define, there might be a leak or three.

This might, now, mirror Frerichs-Cross in statewide closeness, and if that is my thought on this, then I have to then base that that on a perceived closing of that 8 point gap, which I thought would happen with Munger swamping Mendoza in Ads.

If Munger loses, if she does, given all these parameters now, the weeks and weeks and weeks of holding back dollars instead of building up a stronger name ID could be seen as a mitigating factor.

Mendoza, even in that poll, was underperforming both Duckworth and Clinton. That has been a challenge, maybe, in all this too?

    It may be a Frerichs-Cross finish===

    So… what happened?

The price might be higher than $100K now, as Greitens has some serious lawyering bills to pay. On the bright side, Greitens likely will have a lot of time on his hands in the very near future, so availability won’t be a problem (until the trial, anyway).

Word, he has much better numbers than Rauner

On the question, “Do you approve or disapprove of the job performance of Eric Greitens as governor?” a plurality of 47 percent said they disapprove. Forty-one percent said they approve and 12 percent said they aren’t sure. […]

Even among his fellow Republicans, just 63 percent say they approve of Greitens’ job performance, while 20 percent disapprove and 17 don’t know. Those are dismal numbers in hyperpartisan times, with incumbents typically able to count on in-party approval rates of 80 percent or more.
