Rauner campaign releases new version of TV ad that aired during primary

Wednesday, Jun 6, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Rauner Campaign Launches Updated Pritzker-Blagojevich Ad: “That’s The One I Would Want”

Today, the Rauner Campaign is launching the latest in the Pritzker-Blagojevich wiretap series: “That’s The One I Would Want.”

This new version of an earlier Pritzker-Blagojevich ad focuses on Pritzker’s prior donations to Blagojevich before asking for an appointment to the State Treasurer’s position. This wiretap clearly shows the corrupt relationship that Pritzker had developed with the now imprisoned, ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich.

This ad will join the one released yesterday, “Hilarious,” in a television rotation airing across the state.

Check out yesterday’s ad release HERE.

    I guess an ad bragging about signing a balanced budget would just remind everyone that it was his first signed budget in four years as governor.

  2. - The Dude Abides - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:18 am:

    Not bad, at least it’s much more brief than the similar ad they put up previously. Would it be enough for this Independent voter to forget the dismal failure of the last 3 and a half years and seriously consider giving Rauner 4 more years? For me it would not.

  3. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:21 am:

    Same old, same old from Rauner. Just a sound snippet and nothing to back it up, or a more in-depth conversation. Pritzker didn’t get the gig, nor was he charged with anything.

    D

    Pritzker should counter with Rauner giving CPS money after he clouted his kid into Payton Prep, and the money he gave PA Gov. Rendell after he got public employee pension business.

    Rauner got something for his money but Pritzker didn’t.

  4. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:24 am:

    It is Rauner’s guy, Trump, that is going to pardon Blagojevich. What will Rauner do when that happens?

  5. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:24 am:

    Good, but not enough to change anything. Blago sure sounds slimey on that tape.

  6. - OneMan - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:32 am:

    This stuff in heavy rotation is going to increase JBs negatives which is what Rauner needs to do.

  7. - Retired Educator - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:32 am:

    If Rauner thinks touching on this stuff will make me forget the last 3 plus years, he is wrong. Right now, I think anyone would do a better job then him. I don’t understand why he want to continue in a job he is do bad at. Must just be an ego thing.

  8. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:34 am:

    ==It is Rauner’s guy, Trump,==

    Welcome to the 1 person club that thinks Trump is Rauner’s guy. Oy.

    It’s both in their own voices. This whole thing comes down to about 6-7% in the middle. This is enough for a group like this to consider strongly.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:35 am:

    Two points;

    Rauner came out against a commutation of Blagojevich, will Rauner then criticize Trump if that happens?

    Rauner’s approval is at 26%. While this is attacking Pritzker, who is already under water, how does this make Rauner more likable?

    So… the Rauner Crew thinks an approval rating of 26% can be offset by “Brewskis” and trying to sink his opponent who is already under water himself?

    That’s one way to go… I guess.

  10. - Perrid - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:37 am:

    Heh. The $100,000 was donated 2 years before that conversation I believe, so it’s bit of a stretch, but the truth and details don’t matter to most folks, so it’s probably going to work. Rauner isn’t going to focus on the part of the conversation where Rod asked for $50k and JB turned him down.
    And anyone who doesn’t think that people throw their hat into the ring and ask for an appointment has their head in the sand.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:37 am:

    ===It is Rauner’s guy, Trump===

    Rauner has yet to disavow Trump.

    If Rauner did, I missed it, lol

  12. - Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:38 am:

    Rauner ran on an outsider business man that will fix things with a secret plan. Now running on I’m not as sleazy

  13. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:39 am:

    Obviously the consensus for partisan Democrats is the past three years would have been great if only Mike Madigan had unchecked power.

    This ad is not supposed to appeal to Democrats who love Mike Madigan and the status quo.

    It is targeted at those who are disgusted with the political establishment in Illinois for decades.

    By the way Bruce Rauner said he did not favor early release of Governor Blagoevich.

    Senator Dick Durbin is advocating for early release

    Tell me again how a corrupt, convicted former Democratic Governor who was very friendly with JB back in the news hurts Rauner

  14. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:43 am:

    JB initiating the conversation with Blago is what makes this one particularly lethal. The sheer number of different damaging ads that come from the wiretap chats–which will be “rotated”– as Rich pointed out, are what propels this ongoing narrative of who JB is. Rauner has problems of his own galore but the JB camp has never successfully mitigated the power of this type of ad. Grade B.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 9:47 am:

    ===Obviously the consensus for partisan Democrats is the past three years would have been great if only Mike Madigan had unchecked power.===

    Explain the bipartisan budget passed last year, then with bipartisan support, that budget was passed again over the Rauner vetoes. Good try, lol

    ===…Mike Madigan and the status quo.===

    Bruce Rauner signed a budget with the 32% tax increase and no reforms. You tell us all the time that’s the status quo, and now that’s Rauner too, lol

    ===Tell me again how a corrupt, convicted former Democratic Governor who was very friendly with JB back in the news hurts Rauner===

    FakeRealFakeDonaldJTrump - the failing Illinois governor Bruce Rauner, the worst Republican governor in America is against releasing Rod, who was railroaded by the crooked justice department. No wonder Bruce Rauner is losing, he never supported me. Sad.

    If you think Rauner doesn’t need Trumpers AND Ives’ supporters to win, then you may need reprogramming.

    That type of tweet, which should help, won’t. Rauner isn’t Kasich.

  16. - 19th ward guy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:11 am:

    Willy. At some point you’re going to have to give up the 26% approval poll. I know that will make your head explode but citing a poll 3 months old isn’t persuasive.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:14 am:

    ===…but citing a poll 3 months old isn’t persuasive.===

    It’s the most recent.

    You have better polling numbers, verified, have at it.

    Your concern that these numbers aren’t persuasive, I’d be more concerned what these numbers show, lol

  18. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:16 am:

    ===At some point you’re going to have to give up the 26% approval poll.===

    … when a new poll emerges I suppose.

  19. - 19th ward guy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:27 am:

    It’s not, but I wouldn’t want to ruin your narrative.

  20. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:29 am:

    ==This whole thing comes down to about 6-7% in the middle. ==

    Y’all have lost your minds. The upcoming gubernatorial election will in no way, shape or form be a contest unless J.B. murders someone on live TV. For Pete’s sake, there were 1.2 million votes cast in the dem primary - almost double the number of republican votes cast. Rauner would need, just to even compete with Pritzker, every single republican in Illinois to vote for him. And a large majority of independent voters. And some dem voters. Even if Rauner pulling off all of those things were remotely plausible, Rauner would still need a lot of other dems to stay home in November which ain’t happening with trump in office. He just barely won in 2014 by vastly outspending a dimwit in a year that dem turnout was way down, I don’t know how anyone can expect the guy to repeat that feat in this climate against a guy who has more money than he does. This isn’t Ohio or Iowa - closer to NY or California. Math is math.

  21. - 19th ward guy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:29 am:

    And taking the poll you’ve cited for the last 3 months as”verified” a term I’ve never heard in assessing the value of a poll.

  22. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:31 am:

    - 19th ward guy -

    Did I miss your take on the ad, or was your intent just to drive-by me?

    lol

    To the Post,

    What should be the plan is put these on heavy rotation on social media, and put the “Brewskis” type of message on the Tee-Vee so people can find a reason to like Bruce Rauner.

    It’s June. Building positives for an incumbent that’s 30+ points under water with paid media seems like a good plan. Rauner isn’t the challenger. Ask Pat Quinn.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:33 am:

    ===term I’ve never heard in assessing the value of a poll.===

    It ain’t antidotal, lol

    You keep tryin’… Rauner sits 26/60… approval/disapproval.

  24. - Langhorne - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:35 am:

    What a contrast. Rauner has so little to show for 3 yrs, he has to throw blago tapes, madigan, and lies at JB. But he is fairly good at it, and stays on message. JB has an arsenal of rauners failures to choose from, yet instead we get soft ads that barely lay a glove on Rauner. Someone tell me, in 20 words or less, what is JBs message? Progressive income tax?

  25. - ZC - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:45 am:

    The person who’s behind more, has every incentive to go nuclear-negative.

    The contrast in ad tones so far indicates what we all pretty much know, that right now Rauner’s behind and thus he’s throwing bombs.

    Will they work? After 2016 I am out of the predictions business.

  26. - Anon0091 - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 10:50 am:

    It’s worth remembering that all the commenters that say this is deadly for JB are the same folks who predicted the millions Rauner spent on these same ads in the primary would kill him. And yea, I know a General Election audience is different, but the truth is the Rod ads didn’t really have much of an impact in the primary and they haven’t stopped JB from being up double-digits now. Maybe these are more powerful than they appear, but I suspect Rauner just doesn’t have a lot of bullets in the chamber. Rod. Madigan. Taxes. Rinse. Repeat.

    This is why Rauner has base problems.

    Thanks.

    Dialogue from My Cousin Willy?

  30. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:07 am:

    ===Dialogue from My Cousin Willy==

    The original got Marisa Tomei an Oscar, so there’s that.

    My phone has an unusual dictionary at times, correcting or “correcting” at its own, and my, peril.

  31. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:08 am:

    ==Rauner has yet to embrace Trump or even say his name.==

    Partisans have to answer for their cohorts. That’s how it’s always been. That’s the basis of Rauner’s entire strategy, in fact.

  32. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:14 am:

    ==It’s not==

    What is?

  33. - People Over Parties - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:14 am:

    ===Rauner has yet to disavow Trump.===

    Darned if he does, darned if he doesn’t. There’s a line to walk, and it’s most practical in the context of a Republican running in Illinois to avoid Trump all together.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:16 am:

    ===…to avoid Trump all together===

    Rauner states Rod should not be released.

    Ok, so Trump releases Rod, what does Rauner do, ignore it happened?

  35. - People Over Parties - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:29 am:

    Rauner, at the bare minimum, can come out stating that he is against the pardon and leave it at that. The media coverage that would ensue about the release could solidify public views, whatever be, more than any dramatic denouncement would.

  36. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:33 am:

    ===Rauner, at the bare minimum, can come out stating that he is against the pardon and leave it at that==

    … then Trump tweets, now what?

    This premise that Rod being released helps Rauner is wishful thinking. It could backfire on both, but it will chip away more from Rauner as a base voter might wonder “I support Trump and Rauner doesn’t. Trump says so”

    It’s dicey.

  37. - People Over Parties - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:44 am:

    ===“I support Trump and Rauner doesn’t. Trump says so”===

    That would seem to rely on the assumption that Trump supporters like Trump more than they dislike Rod, enough to completely support a pardon, regardless of the person. But, I dunno how those Trump voters feel about Blago.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 11:45 am:

    ===That would seem to rely on the assumption that Trump supporters like Trump more than they dislike Rod, enough to completely support a pardon, regardless of the person. But, I dunno how those Trump voters feel about Blago.===

    (Sigh)

    Again…

    ===It’s dicey.===

  39. - Thomas Zane Stepp - Wednesday, Jun 6, 18 @ 1:29 pm:

    Looks to be a classic mud slinger. The goal of both Rauner and Pritzker is to draw attention away from themselves.
