Question of the day

Wednesday, Jun 13, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* When I decided to do the Illinois vs. Missouri softball game tomorrow, I figured I might as well take Friday off, too. And then I thought, hey, maybe I should go somewhere cool and take off a few more days. And so the decision was made. After close of business today, I’ll be gone until at least next Thursday morning, but maybe not until the following Monday, depending how crazy it gets in my absence.

Hannah Meisel and Barton Lorimor will be handling blog duties while I’m away. Be nice to them, please.

* The Question: Your summer vacation plans?

  5. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

    Chuck. See you there.
Hitting the local town homecoming circuit. I love a picnic fish sandwich with pickles and ketchup. Taking in a bit of baseball heaven on the good old am radio.

Seems like perfect time to party at the Capt Fax Lakefront Compound. Go pontoonin’ around Lake SPI, skinny dip, charge on the Capt Fax Yacht Club account(What was the number). Travel Safe!

  9. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 3:08 pm:

Vacation plans: At least one quickie trip, to a place that has moved forward on certain social legislation and has great outdoor places nearby, for the beauty of nature. Just an inexpensive and quick flight away, in this gorgeous country.

===I’ll be gone until at least next Thursday morning, but maybe not until the following Monday===

Good. I’ll finally get some actual work done. Lol.

I am taking the family on a camping trip to the Sandhills region of western Nebraska. It’s part of a large family gathering (my wife is from Omaha). My idea of roughing it is staying in a hotel with no room service, so this should be interesting. At least the kids will have fun horse back riding, tubing on the Dismal river, plinking with the pellet gun, sleeping under the clearest sky you’ve ever seen.

One extra bonus: I get to play the Sand Hills Golf Club, ranked #9 on Golf Digest’s greatest golf courses in America. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

  11. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

  12. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

Already drove RT-66 this year to visit relatives. Just finished doing the annual IL RT-66 Motor Tour this past weekend. And I have to go to a car club national convention in a couple of weeks because I’m an officer / on the Board of Directors. Then in the Fall we have a trip scheduled to South Carolina with some friends. So that’s it for the year.

    ===polish the flair===

Remember, 15 pieces is the minimum, okay?

Now, you know it’s up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum. Or well, like Bruce, for example, has thirty seven pieces of flair, okay. And a terrific laugh.

  17. - Earnest - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 3:27 pm:

Five-day silent meditation retreat. It was a great adventure and unlike anything I’d ever done. I thought it a more prudent way to get some perspective on my life than buying a red convertible and trying to date 20 year-olds.

    “Your summer vacation plans?”

As always, my plan is to see some of our planet’s greatest musicians perform at some of the best venues in the world — and then sleep in my own bed.

    My God, I love Chicago‼

I’m off to Vienna tomorrow for a week of wallowing in architecture and design.

The rest of the summer, I’ll be home. But Chicago is full of things to do. I expect to be going to a ton of outdoor concerts, mostly classical and jazz.

@Honeybear, where will you be doing the FLW tour? I’m a guide at a couple of the Chicago area sites. Maybe we’ll see each other!

  36. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 4:59 pm:

Staying home, but this is the first year I have not made big plans for the kids. They have not signed up for a single camp. Instead, I will take extra time away from the office and we will hit the health club for tennis and swimming, we will work on learning to speak Greek, and we plan to spend a lot of time at The Modern Wing of the Art Institute.

  48. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 13, 18 @ 11:48 pm:

Loosey-goosey, but summer starts Friday in Grant Park sneaking in cold beers and stickey weed at Bluesfest.

After all these years, I’m Bond, James Bond, with the sneaky beer and dope.

Really, you bust your hump and stick around in this lousy climate all year, you’re a chump if you let anyone tell you how to enjoy decent weather.

That’s always worked for me, except for a couple of unfortunate exceptions. But, as a white male, I can always lawyer-up, so no worries.

    Mavis on Sunday.

Like Jubilee Showcase, out on the farm, when I was a baby.

–I hate to break it to you, but BluesFest was last weekend, at Millennium Park–

Huh. I guess the cold beers and sticky weed did the trick.

Note to self that when Rich posts two Questions of the Day on the same day, he’s overdue for his own vacation.
