* Last week…

The governor signed the bill the very next day. Why 21 stars? We were the 21st state, so that’s how the flag would’ve looked after we were admitted in 1818.

* Today…

* I asked the bill’s sponsor Rep. Tim Butler if he had a photo…

    Luckily, Madigan had an original from his first term.

    (Footnote: the 21-star was the U.S. flag from July 4, 1819 to July 4, 1820, when the 23-star was adopted when Alabama and Maine were admitted to the Union).

    Nice, but someday I’d like to see a 52 star flag, for Puerto Rico and Washington DC.

    This is great. We need to remember that some things are suppose to be bigger than partisan bickering. The bicentennial of Illinois is one of those things.

    The symbolism there, the history of this state is there with flag, 21 stars strong… and not even a civil war and the strifes thereafter, we’re still here.

    Oh, to be twenty-one again.

  8. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 7, 18 @ 1:58 pm:

    To be fair the legislative delay is consistent with the flags history. The 21 star flag was in use from July 4, 1819 to July 3, 1820 which means they waited nearly 7 months after Illinois’ admission.

    ==Sometimes I think we botched our bicentennial celebration. ==

    Ya think?

    We’re going to run out of spots on the flag pole. US Flag. State Flag. Bicentennial Flag. 21 star flag.

    “Well, let’s run it up the flag pole, see if anyone salutes… “

    Sorry. This Bicentennial celebration has not been very exciting.

    Good thing we were governing better back then or there might be 29 territories that never became stars.

  28. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Aug 7, 18 @ 5:20 pm:

    Those complaining about two senators per state, regardless of population need to remember that without equal representation in the senate, there wouldn’t be a reason for any territory to become a state. No one would be voluntarily willing to let people living in distant large cities rule over them as though they were colonies.

    Huh? Who do you think runs federal territories, then and now? Were you under the impression that they were/are independent?

    97% of Puerto Ricans voted for statehood in June of 2017, so yes that is a long time to hold one’s breath.

    No, that’s the big flag.
