Senger agrees Rauner is “lesser of two evils”

Thursday, Aug 16, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Finke

Republican candidates and officials kept up their relentless attacks on the unpopular Madigan and their efforts to link Pritzker to him in the minds of voters. Darlene Senger, the Republican candidate for comptroller, said Republicans were robbed of the comptroller’s office. She said Comptroller Susana Mendoza is a “Madigan mouthpiece.”

She also said Madigan, the head of the state Democratic Party has been weakened by accusations of misconduct leveled against some of his associates.

“That fortress Madigan built is cracking and I’m going to kick the hell out of it,” she said.

Rauner still faces criticism from social conservatives for signing House Bill 40, which expands public funding of abortions in the state.

Senger, who said she opposes the law, said voters will have to examine the alternatives to Rauner. Asked by a reporter if that made Rauner essentially the lesser of two evils, Senger said, “That’s pretty much what it is. What choice do you have?”

Oh my. And she was so close to getting some Raunerbucks with that Madigan rhetoric.

She just closed any chance of getting money from Rauner.

  2. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:13 am:

With McCann to his right and JB to his left, Rauner is trapped. Friendless, he might come in third. He better pay attention because Ives voters are not going to vote for him.

===“That’s pretty much what it is. What choice do you have?”===

    Not a good sound bite.

    I’d blame Tammy Duckworth.

  4. - Real - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:15 am:

Stop trying to convince yourself Senger. Rauner is not the lesser evil. When vets die under Rauner’s watch and you say lets pin this on Duckworth then you are not in any position to judge who is the lesser evil when you just showed everyone that you are evil.

  5. - Jibba - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:16 am:

That dratted General Public and his sneaky elections “robbing” the Republicans again.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:17 am:

===“That’s pretty much what it is. What choice do you have?”===

Ask the families of the 13 who died in Quincy…

  7. - Montrose - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:22 am:

Rauner has a new tagline - The Lesser of Two Evils. He can just coast to a win now.

  8. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:23 am:

===“That’s pretty much what it is. What choice do you have?”===

“No, that is me saying something positive.”

    - Fake Darlene Senger

  9. - Demoralized - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:25 am:

The Republicans were “robbed” of the office? Really. Not a big fan of the voters making a choice, huh?

==I’m going to kick the hell out of it,==

I’m not sure what that means.

  10. - Real - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:27 am:

The voters were robbed when we gave Munger and Dunkin one of those term limits that Rauner likes to talk about and Rauner put them back on the taxpayer dime.

    – Asked by a reporter if that made Rauner essentially the lesser of two evils, Senger said, “That’s pretty much what it is. What choice do you have?”–

For crying out loud, Rauner gave her a fat, six-figure, do-nothing patronage gig, and that’s the best she can muster?

Good to be loved, huh, Bruce?

For the low, low price of $100M+, you too, can buy the ILGOP and get that kind of loyalty and respect.

“Yay, lesser of two evils, yay.”

  12. - Norseman - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:31 am:

Looking forward to saying, “Senger who?”

  13. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:36 am:

    noun: evil
    1. profound immorality, wickedness, and depravity, especially when regarded as a supernatural force.

Why are we regarding either as evil in the context of a governor’s race?

  14. - Frank talks - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:38 am:

Ah the great stateswoman Darlene Senger, the eloquence, the skills, it’s just amazing she wasn’t able to beat Foster for Congress.

    Ooh. No soup for you.

    “What choice do you have?”

Rauner got into a game of Chicken with Madigan, a game Rauner lost from the beginning. As Sun Tzu instructs all of us, first win the war and then fight. Don’t cave at the last minute, after having caused so much damage.

Rauner is most definitely not a conservative, social or otherwise. He purposely allowed debt and deficit to explode. He got few if any reforms passed, that he demanded. He fought a long budget war that he started and lost, in which he caved and let his vetoes be immediately overridden.

The sentiment is very clear for the Republican faithful: What choice do they have? I’d say McCann should get some votes out of this, just as a protest.

  18. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:49 am:

Word is right, I’m pretty angry if I’m Rauner. That comment could have come from Ives. Not only did he give Senger the cushy six-figure state job, but he also engineered her getting the spot on ticket and has pretty much funded her entire campaign to this point. She would never have gotten the nomination for Comptroller without him. This is how she repays him, a “lesser of two evils” comment?

I wonder if she’ll issue a clarification before or after getting a threatening phone call from Hackler or someone like him?

  19. - DarkDante - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:58 am:

Whenever I see imbicilic attacks associating good politicians (Mendoza) as mere puppets of Madigan, I am reminded of a rewritten Dr. Strangelove quote I first saw here:

“I can no longer sit back and allow Madigan infiltration, Madigan indoctrination, Madigan subversion and the international Madigan conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.”

Meh. What choice does Rauner have? Statewide woman candidate with some strong bona fides….
He may not like it. And it may not be the happiest transfer he’s ever done. But, I’ll bet he does it.
    What choice does he have?

  22. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 11:37 am:

Darlene Senger will set the all time record for the largest plurality loss in Illinois history in a statewide race.

  23. - John Deere Green - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 11:43 am:

==Statewide woman candidate with some strong bona fides….==

Can you elaborate? Seems her single achievement by her own words was managing to win a state rep district that was drawn in 2001 for a Republican. Democrats had no business being anywhere close to competitive in that Republican district, 2008 wave or not, and Senger managed to eke out a win by 650 votes in a three-way race with a Green on the ballot. Not exactly an electoral juggernaut.

  24. - JS Mill - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 11:51 am:

“GOP Comptroller Candidate Calls Bruce Rauner Evil”

Now that is a headline I can get behind.

Rauner’s new slogan “It could always be worse (banned punctuation)”

====Darlene Senger will set the all time record for the largest plurality loss in Illinois history in a statewide race.====
Not that I think nor want her to win I think you need to look at some of Jesse Whites vote differences over his foes in past years.

  27. - wordslinger - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

–Darlene Senger will set the all time record for the largest plurality loss in Illinois history in a statewide race.–

    That’s a tall order.

    Senate, 2004:

    Obama — 3.6M

    Keyes — 1.4M

  28. - wordslinger - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 12:02 pm:

    –What choice does he have?–

    Give her nothing.

==Not that I think nor want her to win I think you need to look at some of Jesse Whites vote differences over his foes in past years.==

I think poor Stu Umholtz may be the current record holder. Minus-48% to Lisa Madigan in 2006. Ouch.

  30. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 12:06 pm:

    Again,

Can you name all three… the GOP SoS, Comptroller, and Treasurer nominees?

And you know what? It’s not an accident they aren’t considered strong, and you know what? It helps ramp down turnout that the GOP ticket is terribly weak, and you know what? Rauner needs terrible turnout being so underwater abd double digits behind, and you know what? Rauner told us he’d like to see Harold win so she can procecute his enemies, so you know what? Raunerbucks were going to be sparse before this comment.

  31. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 1:00 pm:

Maybe senger is upset that here sign wasn’t on the Republican party booth at the state fair last week. Senger who?

  32. - wordslinger - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 1:08 pm:

–Darlene Senger will set the all time record for the largest plurality loss in Illinois history in a statewide race.–

    In 2004, Obama beat Keyes by 2.2M votes — 3.6M to 1.4M.

I suspect Keyes record is safe.

  33. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 1:41 pm:

    Democrat wave. Popular Mendoza.

I still say the largest plurality loss in IL history.

  34. - wordslinger - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 2:51 pm:

–I still say the largest plurality loss in IL history.–

    2004 IL Senate Race:

    Obama — 3.6 million, 70%

    Keyes — 1.4 million, 27%

I think Keyes’ record is safe.

  35. - wordslinger - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 2:52 pm:

Obama beat Keyes by 2.2 million votes in 2004.

  36. - SAP - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 2:56 pm:

I don’t think the word “wingman” means what Darlene Senger thinks it means.

  37. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 3:23 pm:

I don’t recall Tammy Duckworth calling a political opponent or ally “evil”. Maybe Senger could learn from her.

  38. - What's in a name? - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 3:45 pm:

On November 7, 2018, Bruce Rauner wakes up and turns to Diana, “God, I hope that was a nightmare. I dreamt I was Governor. Can you believe that. Mike Madigan beat me at everything. I was humiliated.” Diana, “It was a nightmare but its over now.”

  39. - M - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 5:08 pm:

Madigan is not running for office against Rauner, JB is running against Rauner, but people would never know that from all of the anti-Madigan smear ads by Rauner.

I say JB is without a doubt the lesser of the two evils.

  40. - Lincoln Lad - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 8:43 pm:

I live in Senger’s district (when she was in the General Assembly). As a constituent, I reached out to her office three times and never got a response. She might be the worst politician ever. Glad to see her get drubbed as a sacrificial lamb.

  41. - Huh? - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 8:58 pm:

“Rauner essentially the lesser of two evils”
So voting for lesser of 2 evils is still voting for evil. No thank you. Will try to vote for good.

  42. - DuPage Bard - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 10:31 pm:

And there’s Darlene in a nutshell. She was horrible in DuPage could barely answer questions.

  43. - Cosgrove - Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 11:45 pm:

Rich, If HB 40 had excluded the Medicaid provision of the bill, you and I both know that every single legislator who voted NO on HB 40 would have still voted NO, because they want abortion to be illegal in Illinois. The Medicaid provision is just a smokescreen. Why not ask Breen et al that question or at least stop providing them cover with the Medicaid excuse.
