Two months before election day, governor travels to Nebraska

Tuesday, Sep 11, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I hope he’s out there to finally nail down some of those “thousands” of Japanese jobs he’s been promising since his Asian trip almost exactly a year ago…

Daily Public Schedule: Tuesday, September 11, 2018

What: Gov. Rauner attends the Midwest U.S.-Japan Conference, delivers remarks at the closing ceremony
Where: Grand Ballroom (2nd floor), Hilton Omaha, 1001 Cass Street, Omaha, NE 68102
Date: Tuesday, September 11, 2018
Time: 10:30am
Note: No additional media availability.

Or, maybe he’ll stop by the Ricketts family corporate headquarters and try to raise some campaign cash.

Or, maybe he’s just leaving the state to give a speech, which seems kinda odd considering the polling. Weird year.

…Adding… This announcement was reported by the Tribune today…

…Adding… Touché, Daniel…

…Adding… Make that 1,900 total jobs lost…

…Adding… Ouch…

Does he have a home there?

  2. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:15 am:

Scouting sites for the next wine club meeting?

  3. - illini - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:18 am:

Do you think he will be in his Carhartts or will it be one of his other costumes? Why shouldn’t other states have then privilege of experiencing him while he is in one of his mythical elements?

  4. - the Patriot - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:19 am:

This is brilliant. Not being seen or heard in IL and running Ads about Madigan is is his best shot.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:19 am:

With the mythology of Janus fresh, now is the time to give any type of speech anywhere, and to keep phony his national platform alive by any means, including speaking… in Nebraska, 8 or so weeks from Election Day.

  6. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:19 am:

Maybe he can have a chin-wag with Warren Buffett, who could explain the differences between a happy-warrior-investor capitalist and a cynical, pay-to-play bust-out grifter?

  7. - PublicServant - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:22 am:

I hope some reporters tag along to see whether he’s meeting with his Koch Brother Patrons.

  8. - Roman - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:22 am:

    == Weird year. ==

    Weird governor.

  9. - ChrisB - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:22 am:

Come on Rich. He’ll be a few blocks away from the old Conagra headquarters that Rauner had a hand in moving to Chicago.

    That’s gotta count for something.

  10. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:23 am:

At least he can visit a Lincoln County while he’s there.

  11. - A Jack - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:24 am:

Rauner is probably polling better in Nebraska than Illinois.

  12. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:24 am:

A bit unfair, Rich - there may be a few Nebraskans who fled Illinois but are still registered to vote here.

  13. - Anon - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:28 am:

Timing on the Takeda announcement = OUCH!

“Maybe he can have a chin-wag with Warren Buffett, who could explain the differences between a happy-warrior-investor capitalist and a cynical, pay-to-play bust-out grifter?”

Rauner doesn’t even have to leave the state. Pritzker could explain that to him as well.

  15. - Shark Sandwich - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:29 am:

Diana said she wanted a few things from Crate And Barrel, and he really misheard her.

  16. - Wow - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:29 am:

I’ve got it!! The flight is just to build up frequent flier miles so he can upgrade to business class when he and Mrs R make the permanent move to Italy

  17. - A Jack - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:30 am:

Perhaps Rauner is going to lecture Nebraskans on how uncompetitive they are with their graduated income tax rate.

  18. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:33 am:

“Wait, this isn’t Downstate Illinois? Cornfields sure do all look alike.”

  19. - anon - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:34 am:

What is the “Ricketts family corporate headquarters” supposed to mean?

  20. - Father Ted - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:34 am:

That Takeda office closure is a big deal. They built that headquarters building to suit maybe 10-12 years ago. It’s a beautiful building and a giant campus.
I have no idea what the market is for the area or those types of buildings and whether it will be difficult to get another tenant. Maybe Bruce is trying to woo Omaha Steaks, Union Pacific, Berkshire Hathaway or some other Nebraska-based company to move to Deerfield.

  21. - Montrose - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:39 am:

The movie Election was set in Omaha. Maybe he is hoping Tracy Flick is around to give him a few pointers.

  22. - Huh? - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:41 am:

Obviously, the Japanese pharma company is moving out because illinois doesn’t have term limits.

  23. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:46 am:

==What is the “Ricketts family corporate headquarters” supposed to mean?==

The home offices of TD Ameritrade, run by Joe Ricketts. He’s the really crazy patriarch of the family who gave the kids enough money to buy the Chicago cubs. If you need even more reasons to dislike the cubs, this guy is it.

  24. - City Zen - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 10:50 am:

Takeda leaving is a huge loss. These are the types of positions and income levels that support the rest of the state.

Interestingly, Mass is a flat income tax state which recently tried to implement a millionaires tax but the ballot initiative was deemed unconstitutional.

  25. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 11:08 am:

Takeda is moving to a state with higher income tax: 5.1%.

  26. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 11:16 am:

Hmmmm . . . If this was a trip to bring bidnesses to Illinois, you would think Intersect would be going since they are so laser focused on bidness and growin’ jobs.

But no mention of Intersect on this trip. Not on their website or twitter.

If no Intersect, then is this trip about bidness? Or politics? And if it is about politics, then the Guv traveling to another state 8 weeks before the election is telling.

  27. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 11:20 am:

–What is the “Ricketts family corporate headquarters” supposed to mean?–

Invest 20 seconds on the google and you’ll know. Seek and ye shall find.

It’s not a knock, by the way. Just a statement of fact. Pavlov did not ring the bell.

No worries. I’m sure many grievances large and small will present themselves to you before the day is done to fill the time. Have fun with them.

  28. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 11:53 am:

==* I hope he’s out there to finally nail down some of those “thousands” of Japanese jobs he’s been promising since his Asian trip almost exactly a year ago…==

    Get your facts straight, Miller.

It’s “tens of thousands of jobs”(i.e., at least 20K) and they’re already here, as the governor told us just a few weeks ago.

You know it’s true. Who would lie about such a thing?

    That would be insane.

What the hell kind of group holds the “closing ceremonies” at 10:30 a.m.? Was there an all night free for all?

  30. - Honeybear - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 12:30 pm:

I think it is the Koch Bro think tank folks
    Remember
Impasse decision is still hanging out there.
There’s a lot of gaming that one out.
I think the impasse decision with AFSCME
    Is going to come down
    Rauner will implement his contract
    That day
I can see him trying to force a strike or locking us out
Whatever makes him look the hero.
    No I think he’s meeting
With the big brains to run scenarios.
    It’s not a business trip
    It’s a conference visit

  31. - ChrisB - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 12:34 pm:

    @Shark

I see what you did there. Underrated comment of the year material.

  32. - anon2 - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 12:56 pm:

Deerfield is where Rauner grew up, so it’s more painful than a loss elsewhere.

  33. - Lt Guv - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:05 pm:

    Can he stay in Nebraska?

  34. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

Pretty rich for Senator Morrison complain about the Governor’s record advocating for the Illinois business community after all of her caucuses votes in the most unfriendly legislative session to the business community in Illinois history.

  35. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:22 pm:

The fact is that Julie Morrison and the Dems have failed to upgrade and make the Research and Development credit permanent. Many of the jobs that already moved are R & D because they turn the incentive it on and off. It’s a shame because we’re losing corporate research to other states.

  36. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:34 pm:

Madigan has so much diabolical power over people that he forced Rauner to attack him for four years and damage the state, instead of Rauner focusing on jobs.

  37. - Occam - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:37 pm:

Re: Senator Julie Morrison’s tweet blaming Rauner for Takeda leaving.

Is it not HER role, as a legislator, to write legislation that prevents busiensses from leaving the State?

Did she not vote to INCREASE income taxes at the corporate and individual level?

Has she not acted in concert over the years with the other democrats to create the worst business and economic climate of any state in the union?

Apparently, Senator Morrison is irony impaired.

  38. - Ripples Matter - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 1:42 pm:

The pharmaceutical industry has an extremely high employment multiplier effect at 5.7. So assuming the 1900 jobs figure, this would actually result in about 10,800 net jobs lost across a variety of sectors. This ripple effect would also lead to a loss of about $1 billion of personal income and $2 billion of value added across the economy.

  39. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 2:02 pm:

I was wondering I was having a good day.

Stay away Bruce. You’re a downer, Rauner.

  40. - anon - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 2:30 pm:

Lester Holt and wordslinger — Re the Ricketts “family corporate headquarters” line. I suggest you spend more than a few minutes on Google. The Rickets do not run TD Ameritrade. As shareholders (reported about 7%), one family member sits on the Board. But nice try.

  41. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 2:56 pm:

If Loser Biss’ campaign had been half as clever as his Tweets, perhaps he might have stood a chance.

  42. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 3:27 pm:

==Did she not vote to INCREASE income taxes ata the corporate and individual level?==

Takeda is moving to the Boston area. Massachusetts corporate income tax is 8%, Illinois corporate tax is 7%,and property taxes are higher in the Boston area due to higher property values.

Takeda isn’t moving because of the taxes.

  43. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 4:31 pm:

    –But nice try.–

My, you’re a delicate daisy. The Ricketts are into all sorts of things. The old man has the money, and he lives in Omaha.

Who knew someone would get offended by “family corporate headquarters?”

Why does that offend you, by the way? Where does it rank among the many things that have undoubtedly offended you today?

  44. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 4:53 pm:

===Why does that offend you, by the way?===

Could be Tom or Todd. lol

  45. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 5:43 pm:

Could be Tom or Todd. lol–

Tom and Todd need to concern themselves with the boys from Milwaukee right now, not what’s going on in Omaha.

  46. - Yu2 - Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 6:45 pm:

How much of a subsidy did IL give Takeda to come here, and are we owed any “claw-back?”
