* Woke up early this morning with a sore throat. Went back to bed. Woke up again with a sore throat. Had some tea. Didn’t feel much better. Checked my e-mail and various news sites for anything major. Saw nothing important. Going back to bed. Be nice to each other and keep it Illinois-centric, please. Thanks.

I feel like Norm when he looks into “Cheers” and sees not only is Sammy not behind the bar, “Cheers” is closed.

    Illinois-centric…

Gery/Jerry/Garry McCarthy was at a GOP fundraiser with Rauner and Durkin, et al… that’s interesting.

  2. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:42 am:

===McCarthy was at a GOP fundraiser with Rauner and Durkin, et al===

Wasn’t that the event at the Peninsula with special guest Reince Priebus? Some hotels in Chicago had the rats on the outside. Last night at the Peninsula, the rat was on the inside.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:45 am:

Who has a more confusing thought to having a constituency?

    Bruce Rauner
    Gary McCarthy

Both seem to be without one

  4. - Mr.Black - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:45 am:

Still thinking about Khalil Mack. I know it’s only been one game, but I haven’t been excited about the Bears in a while.

What’s your prediction on the state making good on the step issue by October 1st?

  6. - Give Me A Break - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:48 am:

So how about those Fighting Lovies? 2-0, this might be the high point of the season. Between injuries and suspensions, not sure I see another W on the schedule.

  7. - Because I said so.... - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:49 am:

Got an interesting phone survey last night about the Chicago mayoral race. Questions were all “if the election were today and the only 2 candidates were.” Mostly Mendoza vs some of the lesser known candidates and then Mendoza vs Preckwinkle and even a mention of Bill Daley.

  8. - Anon - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:49 am:

McCarthy had dog whistles hanging around his neck. He will run an ugly campaign.

  9. - don the legend - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:50 am:

Early voting starts in 12 days. Those candidates that are holding anything back thinking they have until November 6 are taking a huge risk.

Early voting is more popular than ever.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:50 am:

===So how about those Fighting Lovies? 2-0===

Yeah, the “number” is “0.5” in wins now.

Tough to go “over” but that “number” is too easy to stay under…

  11. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:53 am:

Does anyone think Rauner will have an
    October surprise?
I think the 4th District Appelate will rule
    Impasse
    For the Afscme contract
    Rauner will impose his contract
    That day
The pull the trick he used before
Having the court stall on the written ruling
Thus hampering our ability to take it to the
    IL SC
This will cause our bargaining team
    To contemplate a strike
This will give Rauner the boogie man to fight
    Madigans greedy stateworker union bosses
( which is ridiculous, he’s only hurting, actually hurting
Regular folks like me. I work for the poor disabled and elderly of this state every day. Yet Rauner hates people like me. )
    This is the October surprise
    I am fearing most
I can’t take a 120% increase in my healthcare costs
Which are already straining my budget
But I can totally see Rauner
    Being do callous and malicious

  12. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:54 am:

    ===Early voting starts in 12 days.===

I can’t wait to hear reports from the field about the Pritzker Crew and their offices and early voting… and the Rauner operations, and how they are going to go about their business with early voting.

Honestly, I’m geeked out waiting to see all this unfold. Can these offices gin up the turnout. The Pritzker Field Crew were stellar in March, can they repeat (especially downstate numbers that exceed expectation or historical numbers for a general election) March benchmarks?

  13. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Does this mean GovJunk is for McCarthy?
That sounds like another bungle. Is McCarthy familiar with GovJunk early release programs?

  14. - SOIL M - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Make that tea into a hot toddy and you will feel better when you get out of bed.

  15. - ItsMillerTime - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 9:59 am:

So what happened to the Bears offense at that last game? I understand that the defense can only do so much against Aaron Rogers but that doesn’t explain why we suddenly forgot to advance and score.

  16. - G'Kar - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:01 am:

Last week Time had an article about the movement to have a “Convention of the States” to amend the Federal constitution. In the third paragraph the author states that Illinois is one of the states that has voted in favor of calling such a convention. That made me go “huh?” I did the google thing and could not find anything confirming this. Is, as I suspect, the author wrong?

  17. - G'Kar - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:03 am:

And I have another question–is there a connection between Illinois Review and IPI? Again, I did the google thing and could not find an answer.

  20. - Tequila Mockingbird - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:10 am:

Rahm Emmanuel in the news a lot for an outgoing mayor. He is apparently seriously considering a “guaranteed income” pilot program to help his legacy. Like handing out free money to Chicagoans that do nothing to earn it as anything new.
$500 per month (no strings attached) to 1000 families. I’m sure they won’t spend it on drugs, Nike wear, or a new big flatscreen. It will all go towards food, school supplies, and rainy day fund.

Hey ILGA - Could you maybe, like just a little bit, pretend to care about people in Illinois nursing homes? I mean, at least think about them a tiny bit after you cash HCCI’s big check. No? Okay well it was worth a short.

    You’re on it.

I think Purdue allows “over” bets to happen now.

    They are categorically awful.

Try a product called “throat coat” (sic) - it has a different spelling, but I can’t think of it this morning. Usually found at GNC and some drug stores. Call around.

Lots of concern about the pay freeze. I know we have an election coming up but could some of you media types pretty please ask him about it once in a while? Maybe put him on the spot? We’ve been waiting so long. No snark intended.

  39. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:44 am:

I’d almost give UI a chance vs Northwestern, but the game is on the road. That would require them not only to get the suspended and injured guys back, but also to refine the run pass option, which appears to be the bane of Pat Fitzgerald’s existence.

  40. - Groucho - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:45 am:

I had a similar awakening; woke up this morning with a wine glass in my hand.

  41. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:45 am:

I was disappointed that the Bears didn’t run the ball during their last play of the game and at other times. They had a little time on the clock and two time outs. They needed a first down but had three incomplete passes. They also passed and missed on a 3rd and 2 and passed but didn’t execute on a 3rd and 1, in the 4th quarter. They have two good backs plus Trubisky looks like he can run.

  44. - 10th Ward - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 10:49 am:

@Mr Black–Mack can’t play QB so you better hope #2 plays better or the Bears will end up 8-8. He missed a wide open receiver in the endzone on that last drive.

Yep. They got too cute at critical junctures. If you can’t get 2 yards in 2 plays pounding the ball up the middle you deserve to lose.

I’ll be traveling down to St Louis next week. Going to stop near or in (depending on the recommendations) Springfield for a horseshoe breakfast. Never had one before. Trying to take Route 66 as much as possible on my Vespa. Where should I go?

–They also passed and missed on a 3rd and 2 and passed but didn’t execute on a 3rd and 1, in the 4th quarter. They have two good backs plus Trubisky looks like he can run.–

In short yardage situations, Brady and Big Ben routinely go no-huddle under center and run sneaks for first downs. Virtually impossible to defend when you don’t have time to make subs.

The book on Mitch is he has still has difficulty handling the snap and the footwork required for going under center. He was strictly a shotgun/option qb in college.

He has to master going under center. It opens up play-action options that freeze the safeties and would strengthen both the passing and running games.

One day hopefully in the not too distant future adults in Illinois will be able to go to stores and buy “medicinal” products, including beverages and edibles, that can ease our cold/flu symptoms.

  53. - Jibba - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 11:14 am:

Be sure to get a Route 66 map that shows all the alternatives. 66 changed a LOT over the years, especially around Springfield, and you can drive on the old 66, newer 66, bypass 66, and others. This is most useful when one of the routes is now gone, mostly under I-55.

And horseshoes are good any time of the day.

77% of incoming freshmen at UI are in-staters. A record, apparently, as per N-G. Possibly reacting the the pressure to admit more in-staters, but the large size of the class is likely due to the need for revenue as well. While many may still be going out of state, that is a lot of high performers staying in state, for college at least.

Some of his issues with the snap should be attributed to Cody Whitehair. Guy is awful at center, should be moved back to guard. The last two drives against the Packers, every snap was too high and Mitch had to reach way up to snag them out of the air.

Would that mean Illinois agrees to a Convention of the States only to discuss Citizens United? Or would this allow other amendments to be considered as well?

  73. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 12:03 pm:

    This is true.

The Cubs have the best record in the National League.

    This is also true.

The Cubs are probably the 5th or 6th best team, in all of baseball, (NY, BOS, CLE, OAK… Astros)

Tough times lay in wait for any NL Club.

I’m not predicting, but I am combining #2 and #3. I think, ideally, MJM would want to replace BFC with another woman. But, I’m not sure how interested he’d be in having any of the current women in leadership fill that role. I think Art Turner would be a great choice. No idea who’ll get it though.

The Mendoza-Chuy dynamic, both with races in November too.. they are playing three seperate games of chicken… one with voters, another with each other, and a third with the field outside Chuy to Mendoza and visa-versa.

Luis would like to be a kingmaker.

How do I know? His daughter running for Alderman?

  79. - Jibba - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 12:15 pm:

Indeed, OW. Sadly, the results seem mixed. Trib article today shows increases at UIC, UIUC, EIU, and freshmen enrollment at ISU and UIS (with overall declines), but major declines at SIUC, SIUE, WIU, and NIU. Different reasoning and solutions at each school, per administrators. Looks to me like survival of the largest.

I don’t really clutch my pearls over students leaving the state for education, because Illinois is one of the few mid-continent states that imports the college educated, mostly due to the vibrancy and economy of Chicago. However, we can’t run our colleges half full, so something must be done for that reason. Shutting one or more down might be a solution, but it is a bad precedent and an economic disaster for the local area. I prefer more state aid and exploring alternative ways of delivering education that are less costly. The first college that offers a degree in 3 years will see a major jump.

For a breakfast shoe, my vote is Parkway Cafe (get off at the 100 mile maker, west to Dirksen, north to the cafe, blue building on west side of street). Alternative is Charlie Parker’s on North Street, but I prefer Parkway.

Now if you were doing a lunch/dinner shoe, totalky different animal and different recommendations.

Does Tequila Mockingbird know that TV screens have been “flat” for over a decade now. You don’t need to specify that. Comes off a tad bit out-of-touch.

== We were imagining a Theo Epstein World Series this year, Red Sox vs. Cubs. I know it’s premature but it would be a sight, in the two old ball parks. ==

Would be interesting. I’m Cubs, wife is Red Sox.

  88. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 12:54 pm:

BTW … Parkway is on old Bypass 66.

Depending on the day, I might try to meet you.

If you haven’t planned which route south of Springfield, I recommend the original one that mostly follows the current RT-4. That way you can hit the brick loop south of Chatham. At one time, RT-66 from Springfield south was all brick for quite a distance. And RT-4 alignment takes you through more of the small towns.

When are polls coming out? I’d be curious to see if Rauner is within 10 points.

===I’m sure they won’t spend it on drugs, Nike wear, or a new big flatscreen===

Why not put more money in the pockets of suburbanites so we can spend it on wine, Eddie Bauer wear, and a new big flatscreen?

Or downstate, so they can spend it on opioids, Carharrt wear, and a new big semi-automatic rifle?

  93. - PublicServant - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 1:34 pm:

Thanks for the tips, guys. Now I’ve gotta make up my mind. That’ll be a first. I’ll let you know RNUG. I have to firm up plans on how early I can leave.

A cordial invite to all you northerners. If ya want a beautiful weekend road trip, c’mon down and travel the Shawnee Wine Trail.

“something not seen in quite a while. Hope.” Wasn’t that what they said when they got Jay Cutler?

“Oh yeah, I live in Illinois which used to be across the river from the Rams”.

Some people who lived by the Cuyahoga River could say the same thing.

Hopefully after McCarthy loses his bid for mayor he will finally say good bye to Chicago.

Hey PublicServant, I know it’s the one everyone talks about, but it’s tough to beat D’Arcy’s Pint for a horseshoe. I go down to the Metro-East quite frequently, and I generally time my trip so I’m heading through Springfield around lunchtime. I alternate my stops between D’Arcy’s and Magic Kitchen Thai food.

Mrs. Dr. Benton Cook ||| formally known as Dorthy Brown is picking up momentum in her bid for Mayor of Chicago.

  102. - PublicServant - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 3:25 pm:

Too many choices for the best horseshoe breakfast. I guess I’ll have to make multiple trips. RNUG, I’ll take your advice this trip and the brick loop sounds really cool. I’ll be there between 8-8:30 on Thursday the 20th. Looking forward to it. Bring Rich. I know he loves me.

  103. - revvedup - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 3:54 pm:

A big feel better to Rich. You might try the zinc lozenges (do not take on an empty stomach!), about 1000mg of vitamin C a day, and gargling with antiseptic mouthwash a few times a day (the alcohol in mouthwash may kill some of the infection, especially if you have abscesses on the tonsils).

Bears: Hope may return, and for love of Our Angel of the Goal Line, please fire Fuller!

  104. - SAP - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 4:59 pm:

pto: The flatscreen reference was definitely the part that was out of touch with that comment.

  105. - Jibba - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 5:00 pm:

All this talk about horseshoes makes me sad for the Norb Andy’s of my youth. And no, I won’t be so mean as got suggest Public Servant go looking for it.

    -Public Servant-

I’ll try to make it. If I do and it’s not raining, I’ll be driving a classic car with RT-66 Motor tour decals.

  107. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 12, 18 @ 7:25 pm:

    -Oublic Servant-,

Just north of Springfield you will be south bound on I-55 (it’s on top of the old Rt-66). To follow the old 66 / Bypass 66, take the Sherman exit, come south through Sherman, cross the Sangamon River Bridge, then at the next stop light, turn left (east) on Dirksen Parkway. Follow that under the viaduct, around the curve, and about the time you see Walmart on the left you will see Parkway Cafe on the right in a blue building just after the one stop light.

When you leave, we can guide you down one of three different alignments in Springfield and get you on RT-4.

Hey Fat Lady Sings, I assume you disagree with Oswego Willy on some issues. So show him you are right with your superior arguments. He is astute commentor, so winning a joust with him would be something to be proud of.
What does a string of insults prove? Even a toddler knows how to do that.

  109. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:38 am:

==I think the 4th District Appelate will rule Impasse.==

From the AFSCME website,”At the June 13 hearing, the court questioned why the labor board had changed, without justification, the way in which it defined an impasse. The appellate panel of three judges also questioned the state’s refusal to give the union information it needed to bargain (deemed an unfair labor practice by the labor board).”
Based on this I’m not sure why the 4th District Appelate Court would rule that there is an impasse.
