* Oops. I forgot to post a question. Illinois sports open thread, perhaps? Have at it.

  1. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:00 pm:

I remember for years dreaming about what it would be like for the Cubs to play meaningful baseball games in September.

Now it’s too stressful to watch.

Also, so long Hawk Harrelson. Now I can finally watch the Sox on TV. He gone, hopefully forever.

  2. - Huh? - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:00 pm:

How about those Cubs? Swan dive at the end of the season.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:01 pm:

    September Swoon?

The Cubs as a wild card might be better, coming at it like underdogs.

  4. - very old soil - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:02 pm:

    What 47th said

  5. - Pundent - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

Is it just me or have the Cubs suddenly forgotten how to score runs this month. They look tired. Doesn’t bode well for the playoffs.

  6. - Saluki - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

50 days till SIU Men’s Basketball plays Kentucky at Lexington.

  7. - ChrisB - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:07 pm:

Fun win for the Sox last night. I’ll miss Hawk, but I do like that HF is slowly taking over the Sox telecast.

Trubisky is trash, and will never be a franchise QB. But with this defense, the Bears will somehow stumble into the playoffs and lose in the first round. Calling it now.

  8. - South of I-80 Still - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:08 pm:

My question is who does everyone think is the top Illinois born athlete ?

Mine is a tie between Red Grange and Dick Butkus

  9. - Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:12 pm:

Cubs will win the division, mark it down. Down to the wire is what you usually get in a good division, not the JV squad playing in the AL Central.

  10. - pto - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:13 pm:

Just imagine if the Bears drafted Patrick Mahomes instead. Wouldn’t have even required the too-clever-by-half trade to move up.

  11. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:15 pm:

Saluki, most Illini fans have turned the page to basketball season, too. First practice was yesterday and team looks much more in tune with Underwood than last year.

  12. - Reality Check - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:18 pm:

Cubs fans are big Cards fans tonight.

  13. - Henry Francis - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:19 pm:

    I-80: it’s gotta be Jackie Joyner-Kersee

What team should you be more optimistic for in the upcoming season: Bulls or Hawks?

  14. - Yup! - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:19 pm:

NIU has still not fired Coach Rod Carey. Hopefully this is his last season, they will be lucky to have 3 wins.

  15. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:22 pm:

Lifelong Cubs fan … they’ve played good ball all year but they are making me nervous. Should still manage a wild card spot if they don’t take the Central Division.

Going to be interesting if it ends up Red Sox and Cubs, since we root for both teams.

  16. - Seats - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:25 pm:

Illini find out if they can keep EJ Liddell a top 50 senior basketball player in state on Monday. Set to announce between Illini, Ohio State, and Mizzou.

  17. - SSL - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:28 pm:

Cubs core is lacking leadership. In 2016 they wore opposing pitchers out by being disciplined and making every at bat a tough out.

Now it’s swing for the fences every time, regardless of the situation. Tough to watch.

  18. - DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:28 pm:

Illinois will not come off with a loss this weekend. And as to Cubs, 1969 a great year

  19. - City Zen - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:31 pm:

==The Cubs as a wild card might be better, coming at it like underdogs.==

A team with the 4th highest league payroll is no underdog.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

===A team with the 4th highest league payroll is no underdog.===

A team, not a division winner, is arguably an underdog. That’s why they’re called a wild card team.

  21. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:51 pm:

    ==I-80: it’s gotta be Jackie Joyner-Kersee==

I’d throw in Ken Norton for consideration as well

  22. - Amalia - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:53 pm:

fun watching Cubs fans nervous even if they will make the playoffs. Sox game last night was so interesting to watch 1) because they did a fantastic job honoring Jim Angio on his retirement from directing the games on tv. learned lots watching all that and 2) because the Sox dug deep to make sure Shields did not lose what could be his last game with them, and even his last game in baseball. the team loves Shields. Also the Palka Polka!!!

  23. - Steve Rogers - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 4:57 pm:

I’m actually kind of excited about Illini basketball this year. Last year I was cautiously optimistic, but this year, I feel a good second year with Underwood. Really looking forward to seeing a few of these freshman standouts.

  24. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 5:01 pm:

Go Brewers. I just hope my Fighting Illini beat Rutgers.

  25. - City Zen - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 5:10 pm:

==they did a fantastic job honoring Jim Angio on his retirement==

Crazy to think Jim Angio’s career dates back to White Sox games on Channel 44.

  26. - OneMan - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 5:22 pm:

NIU has still not fired Coach Rod Carey. Hopefully this is his last season, they will be lucky to have 3 wins.

You willing to put some $$ on that three-win prediction?

  27. - John Deere Green - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 5:35 pm:

==Cubs fans are big Cards fans tonight.==

Meh. If St. Louis loses tonight, Cubs clinch a WC spot.

  28. - Been There - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 5:43 pm:

===My question is who does everyone think is the top Illinois born athlete ?
Mine is a tie between Red Grange and Dick Butkus====
Can’t argue with those picks but will throw George Connor in the top three also. Probably one of the last players to play almost an entire game. Offense, defense and special teams

  29. - Cler dcn - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 6:01 pm:

Illinois State University football go Redbirds they are off to go season.

  30. - Amalia - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 6:03 pm:

@City Zen, good point. In the past 40 years of Angio’s work, the Sox have been all over the place media coverage wise.

  31. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 7:13 pm:

Really excited about the 2021 White Sox.

  32. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 8:50 pm:

At cubs pirate game. 6 to 2

  33. - Timmeh - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 9:29 pm:

Does talking about the “Timberbulls” upcoming demise count as Illinois centric sports news?

  34. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 10:18 pm:

All the Redbirds have left is a chance to play spoiler to the Cubs division title

  35. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 10:30 pm:

    Cubs melted. Tie in 9th

  36. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 26, 18 @ 11:12 pm:

Cubs managed a W in the 10th to hang on to 1st.

Regardless of the rest of the week, they will be in the post season.

  37. - Stuff - Thursday, Sep 27, 18 @ 8:35 am:

    - My question is who does everyone think is the top Illinois born athlete ? -

Not on the list…Chicago native Chris Chelios. One of the greatest American players of all time, Hockey Hall of Famer, multiple time olympian and Captain of Team USA. Had some Stanley Cups along the way too. Ended his professional career in Chicago at the astounding age of 48, playing in the minors. Just returned to the hometown to join the Hawks organization.
