The least-asked question of the election season

Tuesday, Oct 9, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner at Crain’s Chicago Business the other day

In his interview with Crain’s, Rauner in painfully personal terms talked about how he’s lost 22 pounds and “a lot of hair,” often wakes at 3 a.m. and has lived a “very stressful” life for years.

He’s talked often about his striking weight loss.

* So, Tina Sfondeles asked the governor and JB Pritzker today about their health and how they handle stress

Rauner listed three ways he works to reduce stress: riding his motorcycle, swimming, as well as skating and rollerblading.

Pritzker listed his ways to decompress as having “great friends” and “great activities.” The billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist said he’s a “decent” tennis player, “although I have trouble I admit getting everywhere on the court — sometimes I miss shots,” Pritzker said. He said he also enjoys lakefront walks.

Pritzker also said he is constantly monitoring his weight.

“I think you know I’ve had a weight problem nearly my entire life. Like a lot of other people, I’m always struggling with it. There’s no doubt about it. I always monitor it because, you know, my father passed away when he was young of a heart problem, and I’m always concerned about it,” Pritzker said. “I have two young children that are teenagers. I want to be well for them. So I’m always constantly keeping an eye on it.”

… and Diana Rauner, according to Bruce, says this is the happiest Bruce has been in years.

    Yikes…

    I like that he’s a little overweight, it’s relatable.

I am stunned. I always thought Rauner kept in shape assisting County Deputies with evictions. They need help carrying stuff out of the house to the curb.

Researchin’ Italian real estate is probably relaxin’ him too.

  5. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 4:26 pm:

Rauner’s stressed because he can’t jam through his anti-union agenda and refuses to compromise. Would Rauner be so stressed if he passed his agenda? He’d be glowing like Pence after a brief tanning session.

Rauner claimed he rode his motorcycles with veterans, policemen, and firefighters. Funny that those are the occupations that seem to stir up patriotism and votes. Guess I am out of luck as a downstate part-time short-order cook in a middle eastern cuisine restaurant. No way I could be accepted into his riding group. Oh well Al continue be a lone wolf in my riding.

In all seriousness, I thought JB should have pointed out to the Sun Times board that Rauner flew all over the world to ride his Harley with other millionaires and billionaires and exotic locations. His leather vest wearing every man stick is about as phony as it gets.

Sorry for the double post and typos. I need an edit button. Shtick not stick.

    “Keeping an eye on it.”

Weird. The man is morbidly obese and should be doing more than keeping an eye on it.

I need to lose 22. I should have run for governor….

  11. - DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 4:44 pm:

I may not like Rauner and I am a Republican. And I may not like a lot of politicians, but at least they are out there trying to do whatever they think is best. So God Bless them. Some do care just separate the wheat from the chaff and as long as i am on cliches easier said than done.

  12. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 4:44 pm:

Republicans, to their credit, have mostly restrained themselves from attacking JB’s weight, and such attacks would almost certainly backfire. It does make him relatable, especially since he clearly thinks about his weight in terms of his family.

  13. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 4:47 pm:

Just a guess because I don’t know how tall JB is, but he appears at least 75 pounds overweight. He could afford to have personal trainers and chefs so it is very surprising, given a family history of heart issues, that he apparently does not consider health as a major issue.

Given Rauner’s experience, being governor will be perfect for Pritzker. Got a four-year course, a real tough one; turn him into a lean, mean, fightin’ machine.

  15. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 5:31 pm:

Not a fan of either really but I hate it that JB’s weight is even something to talk about. (I thought we only did that to women) It’s not like he’s clueless. And if anyone’s concern is that he isn’t healthy enough to be governor—- that he could have a health issue that would leave the state leaderless……………..I say, we’ve had a state with no leader for 4 years.

  16. - Rick - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 5:32 pm:

When Chris Christie first ran, the NYC, Newark and Trenton press were all over this issue and in ways not flattering to Christie.

  17. - SSL - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 7:44 pm:

People handle stress in different ways, but the stress of holding a major political office is a completely different animal. I’m sure JB is already a busy guy and his days probably don’t allow for much physical activity. Being governor isn’t going to help. For his own sake he needs to get very disciplined around diet and exercise. Get a personal trainer and chef.

Rauner’s stress level is about to go way down.

  18. - Huh? - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 8:06 pm:

I don’t care that 1.4% lost 22 pounds or his hair is falling out due to stress. The stress was self inflicted. He could have worked with the GA to solve the problems of the State. Instead, he went out of his way to inflict serious damage to the state, all the while blaming his problems on Madigan.

  19. - Maestro - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 10:21 pm:

As Eric Sevareid once commented when Richard Nixon made a similar complaint. “You are the one who chose to run… Nobody forced you to do this.” If it is so taxing on your health then step away.

  20. - Glengarry - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 3:03 am:

Rauner kept in shape grave digging because of the Quincy Massacre.

  21. - Rabid - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 9:22 am:

No rest for the wicked, home worth fightin for, your out of your weight class

  22. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 3:13 pm:

Can’t eat, can’t sleep, but never been happier. Hypermania?
