I think McCann has a right to answer or not answer. Just because you offer to interview does not mean everyone will comply. Maxwell get over yourself. The man doesn’t respect you as a journalist. Pretty simple to understand.
“Sam McCann
@mccann_sam
Not dodging. Simply declining. Not wasting another breath on you. You think the road to your future success is twisting fact into fiction. You are the epitome of the farce that modern day “journalism” has become. I have every right not to interview with you & I exercise that right”
I’m going to say I agree with McCanns right not to interview.
- Are Ya Kiddin' Me? - Wednesday, Oct 31, 18 @ 10:08 am:
I’m with Retired Ed @ 10:01…He declined the interview…Maxwell is wrong here and really should get over himself or maybe be a better reporter than he has shown.
There are plenty of reporters who take this goading approach to candidates, trying to get a story out of every encounter they have.
But not everything is news. Just because you have a camera doesn’t mean they have anything to say.
The better ones recognize the very real differences between their role as reporters and the campaign oppo trackers whose job is only to embarrass the candidate they’re stalking.
I still cannot begin to understand how people can regard the type of behavior exhibited by people like McCann and Trump as anything but whiny, petulant, and cowardly.
That anyone considers it becoming of a man has been the most disillusioning thing for me over the past 2 years.
A cheap shot at McCann. He doesn’t like you or doesn’t respect you, get over it. Part of the deal when you are a reporter. Maybe he had somewhere to be.
Sam needs some attention. Being thin-skinned about it isn’t all that great, but because of Trump, it looks less bad since his target audience includes those with issues with the media.
A twitter spat isn’t at all gubernatorial, maybe presidential, and definitely not great for a candidate not named Trump.
- Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Oct 31, 18 @ 10:25 am:
Just uttering the term “fake news” is DQing for me. Yes, he can decline to be interviewed, and yes the press is free to tell everyone he declined to answer their questions.
McCann screwed up by not working the line at the Trump rally in Murphysboro Saturday. Had a captive audience of around 10,000 for hours. I was there and didn’t see him. Apparently McCann was confined to just one small section. Meanwhile, Mike Bost had multiple people with clipboards and sign-up sheets working the mile long line HARD, and he’s not even statewide like Sam.
Don’t know why McCann isn’t better highlighting the lack of support for the President by Rauner & obviously Pritzker. It does give the impression McCann’s not seriously in this thing.
It’s not “goading” to be a journalist out asking questions of people who are running for public office. What do you want them to do, sit under their desks until someone calls a requests an interview request?
- allknowingmasterofraccoodom - Wednesday, Oct 31, 18 @ 10:41 am:
I have to say it again - people should keep their distance from McCann….as the political Karma comes crashing down on him in the next 60-90 days.
This election is a total circus, and McCann is just part of the show.
Ofcourse, it’s not a real campaign. Instead it’s a real campaign to hurt Rauner. It’s revenge for Rauner targeting McCann for standing up against the billionaire and standing up for working families. I applaud McCann for having a backbone when many in his party didn’t. Ensuring Rauner loses is the ballgame and deservingly so.
McCann is one of the few republicans that did his job in Springfield. By working for the people and not working for the party line or the governor. McCann is the type of politicians we need in Springfield. And to be targeting by an elitist like Rauner for standing up for workers should be condemned. It would be nice for Maxwell to do more stories on that.

A moron? That’s mean, false and not gubernatorial. However, springing an interview on him during an unplanned airport run-in and then calling him out for it is a little much.
Maybe McCann should have been politer / more diplomatic with the reporter but, having been to a number of Honor Flight events, Sam’s basic point was correct: the Honor Flight event was NOT the time for politics.
See ya Sam is full of Sam. He was a B- minus legislator at best and has torpedoed his own career on several occasions. Walking away from legit media solidifies the end of his politcal career, hope for your sake the deal you cut pays off.
But can he govern? I, and many voters I know have sworn off party politics and vowed to elect the best person for each office.
So being fairly certain Rauner can’t Govern the fact I actually passed economics so I know what more tax and spend(JB) will do to us, can McCann at least keep it on the rails or are we choosing from the least of the possible disasters.
Sam McCann definitely has the “right” to walk away from an interview. As someone who wants to hold the highest office in the state, it is irresponsible and childish for him to do so in this manner. He doesn’t “have” to talk to the press, but he should to maintain transparency and accountability. McCann’s inability to answer simple questions, that Maxwell said had been sent to him before, just shows he is not ready to be governor.
Next time, Maxwell, get a nice old lady to latch onto McCann’s hood ornament as he drives away, and get it a video. Worked wonders for Rostenkowski’s career, and he was a better politician than any of the candidates for governor.
Used to work at the State. Had McCann come up to me, grab my ID badge and say “I appreciate the working people” Sounds like someone full of himself and without the “working people” he shows what he really is….Nothing
