*** UPDATED x1 - Fitzgerald responds *** Today’s lit drop

Thursday, Nov 1, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’m not sure I totally get the message here, but this Senate Republican mailer does get your attention…

The flip-side is here.

*** UPDATE *** Bridget Fitzgerald posted a Facebook video in response. Click here for that. Transcription

I’m out here canvassing door to door talking to voters directly about their biggest concerns. And one of their concerns is how partisan this campaign is and how partisan politics is overall. My opponent recently sent out a piece of mail that compared me to a piece of meat, and being the candidate that’s in this for positive reasons and trying to set a good example for young girls and children everywhere, I want to go on the record and say I don’t think it was right to compare me to a piece of meat, photoshop my head on somebody else’s body, and I can only hope that this will be the end of this type of communication the more we speak out about it. Please don’t compare people to meat. Thank you.

The photoshopped mailer she referred to is here.

Isn’t that a picture of 45s favorite nighttime snack?

  2. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:27 am:

John Curran is full of empty calories?

  3. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:27 am:

So vote for the one who will clog my arteries?

  4. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:29 am:

    John Curran, the glutton’s choice?

  5. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:30 am:

    John Curran’s not kosher?

  6. - Cromulent M. Biggens - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:31 am:

We got that and my better half said, “Bridget Fitzgerald looks like the healthier choice.”

  7. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:31 am:

    John Curran, the un-healthy choice?

  8. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:33 am:

I double dog dare John Curran to say he (1) approved this in advance or (2) blame the state party for sending out a lame piece without his prior knowledge.

  9. - Nwine - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:33 am:

    John Hein would choose Fitzgerald.

  10. - Nick Name - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:34 am:

John Curran: a heart attack on a plate.

  11. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:37 am:

Could have been better if the Fitzgerald burger looked identical, but was wrapped and frozen.

Instead you get wisenheimers focusing on the toppings.

  12. - Huh? - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:38 am:

In very fine print: “Please bear in mind that photo may be slightly different from actual item in terms of color, size and ingredients due to the lighting during photo shooting, political poofery, out-right lying or the printing of this ad.”

  13. - Almost the weekend - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:39 am:

I’m kind of confused how this is even a competitive race, Radogno has been there for a long time and Dems have absolutely no infrastructure to build off of in this district. This kind of reminds when Dems thought they could pick off Nybo, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on that race and it wasn’t even close. Maybe in two or four more years but I just don’t see it.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:40 am:

Woulda been stronger if they went…

    “Where’s the beef?”

Help with seniors too… a throwback.

This art.. it’s a confusing image.

  15. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:41 am:

If each beef patty represents a public pension then Fitzgerald’s burger is the one pension she might take as a state legislator while Curran’s burgers are the two public pensions he already has which allow him to cros about not taking a third.

  16. - Huh? - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:42 am:

McDonald’s cease and desist order for unauthorized use of Big Mac image in 3, 2, 1 …

  17. - Truthteller - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:43 am:

It looks like a burger, but it’s baloney.

  18. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:43 am:

    Crow about not cros about

As in “I already have TWO fat pensions; who needs a third.”

  19. - Moe Berg - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:43 am:

That should appeal to everyone from 16 year old boys who are still growing and need the calories, to college frat bros who are trying to recover from a bender, to later middle-aged dudes nostalgic for when they could eat such fare without the aid of antacids (and engage in other activities without the assistance of a little blue pill).

The Senate GOP, which has become even more male-dominated, is all-in on its core demo.

Maybe when they’re done with the 14th Amendment they can start to work on the 19th. In some quarters apparently the future is male.

  20. - Arsenal - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:44 am:

==I’m kind of confused how this is even a competitive race==

When the top of your ticket only has a 20% approval rating…

  21. - LakeviewJ - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:46 am:

The front side is pretty confusing, and the back side seems to be trying to shame her for being a woman without kids running against a man with a family??

  22. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:47 am:

Q: Why is this a competitive race?

A: Because Curran’s crew thinks this mail piece actually helps him.

  23. - Captain Obvious - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:54 am:

I would have gone empty bun for the Democrat.

  24. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:03 am:

    ===empty bun===

Lol. “How do you like your bun, Clark?”

  25. - AlfondoGonz - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:08 am:

Metaphor isn’t bad here. GOP policies are kind of like a McDonald’s; the wealthy taking advantage of the low and middle class by selling them artificially pumped up empty calories that give everyone diabetes and heart disease.

  26. - Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:08 am:

I cannot easily digest John Curran?

  27. - Wasntme - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:14 am:

This is probably the first time Fitzgerald has been called plain I’m sure

  28. - Just Observing - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:15 am:

    === John Curran’s not kosher? ===

Technically, the other burger still is not kosher either, unless it was made with kosher beef ;)

=== John Hein would choose Fitzgerald. ===

    LOL. #HitEmWithTheHein

  29. - Fav human - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:23 am:

He’s not the only one who uses that. I got one from a different R candidate.

  30. - Anon - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:27 am:

Wait, didn’t John Curran lose around 200 pounds by switching from the Supersized Big Macs to rice cakes?

  31. - Shamrockery - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:34 am:

Momma always said, never trust a fella with three buns.

  32. - Travel Guy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:41 am:

Here’s what republicans don’t understand: centrists would rather have a plain burger that tastes good than a flashy pile of crap. Their brand of burger only appeals to a limited audience, but sadly, that audience votes most reliably.

  33. - Super Anon - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:44 am:

I’m no ad man but there must be a better way to highlight the facts that Fitzgerald is a 30yr old who lives at home, has no real accomplishments in her life and is in the race only because her cousin is John Cullerton.

  34. - Siriusly - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:56 am:

I don’t know anything about either candidate. And this mailer does nothing to change that. Wasted money. But now I’m hungry.

  35. - Gus - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 10:58 am:

    Bridget Fitzgerald, the healthy choice!

  36. - anon2 - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 11:51 am:

The fact that Curran’s seat is so competitive, as well as other GOP seats in formerly solid red districts, should be a wake-up call to Republicans. You are steadily losing your suburban base, even in DuPage County and northwest Cook. Even if you hang on to some of these hotly contested seats this time, the future doesn’t look good. There just aren’t enough seats in rural Illinois to make up for the hemorrhaging from the ‘burbs.

  37. - wordslinger - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 11:55 am:

–He’s not the only one who uses that. I got one from a different R candidate.–

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the exact same concept, if not the same two images, in previous elections cycles.

Can’t remember who for. So, that’s a testimonial to effectiveness.

  38. - A guy - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 12:03 pm:

    He is tall.

  39. - Anonymous - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

==I’m kind of confused how this is even a competitive race, Radogno has been there for a long time and Dems have absolutely no infrastructure to build off of in this district.==

Casten and Pritzker have built the infrastructure. Fitzgerald is going to catch the run-off.

    Maybe they’re Veggie Burgers

  41. - Leatherneck - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 12:16 pm:

Looks like Curran knows the ins and outs of the “McDonald’s Secret Menu.”

“Coming soon to a neighbor’s grill near you.”

  43. - Union Thug Gramma - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 1:35 pm:

Hmm, in this time of the explosion of obesity and health issues, obviously Curran is, again, deaf when it comes to his constituency…but then, I’ve already voted for Bridget Fitgerald.

  44. - Leigh John-Ella - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 1:50 pm:

Does anyone really want to ponder John Curran’s secret sauce?

I opt for the simple, streamlined, efficient burger.

  45. - Uncle Merkin - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 2:17 pm:

    Gotta court the hungry vote.

  46. - Skeptic - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 2:40 pm:

So the Democrat is a lean, mean burger with no wasteful spending while the Republican burger is piled on with “pork”? I get it now.

  47. - Leatherneck - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:25 pm:

    - Leatherneck - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 1:21 pm:

“Coming soon to a neighbor’s grill near you.”
    ————

Or maybe even sooner to your local downstate Hardee’s restaurant. (And Carl’s Jr. out West). Considering what IMO seems to be their penchant for creating strange burgers.

  48. - DuPage Bard - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:33 pm:

Sad to think that the Senate GOP is so male dominated that they can only compare a woman candidate to a piece of meat. Ad to it they say that their meat is better, bigger and with more stuff. Women will never read in to that viewpoint would they?
Maybe McQueary was correct about these guys?

  49. - fdrdemocrat - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:49 pm:

Do you get fries and a shake with Fitzgerald?

  50. - anon - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 5:29 pm:

Perhaps the point is that one of the choices has short term appeal and later regret?

  51. - Dirty Red - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 5:39 pm:

If this passes as being worth sending out into the district, it’s no wonder the moderate vote is disengaged from the process. Maybe that’s an added advantage for the new SGOP.

  52. - btowntruth from forgottonia - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 6:00 pm:

    dogwhistle sexism in full effect.

  54. - West Side the Best Side - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 8:47 pm:

Stupid ad, but nobody was compared to a piece of meat.

  55. - Old timer - Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 9:23 pm:

Anyone remember the Where’s the Beef attack by Mondale against Hart in 1984 primary, which played off a Wendy’s commercial.

  56. - Missing something - Friday, Nov 2, 18 @ 8:24 am:

How is a picture of 2 hamburgers sexist?
