Late morning/early afternoon precinct reports

* Pic from a couple of pals who are doing GOTV today. “Do we knock on the door to ask?” one texted. I told them to go for it. “I gotta know the reason behind that”…

So one of them did…

Alas, there was no answer at the door.

* I’m thinking he may be exaggerating a bit here…

* Yikes…

* Interesting…

* The Tribune is doing some live election day updates from various polling places. Here’s one from early this morning

Before daylight there was a line of voters at a precinct at Naperville’s Safety Town, a miniaturized town with tiny buildings and street signs. Several dozen voters shuffled in and out within the first hour, including Elizabeth Dubiel.

“I’m trying to change the momentum of the way things are right now. This is the first midterm I’ve ever voted in. In my whole, I’ve probably voted like three times.”

Her first time voting was for former President Barack Obama. Since then, Dubiel said, she became uninspired with the lack of diversity on the ballot.

“In the past there wasn’t too many women on the ballot. I felt like my vote wasn’t heard, like my vote didn’t count.”

* The Sun-Times is also doing live updates

Despite the hope of Democrats for a “Blue Wave,” there were still ticket-splitters out there — even in Chicago.

Diana Brogan, 51, who works in account sales, was one of them. She calls herself a Democrat, but Rauner got her vote for governor.

She called herself a Democrat who voted Republican for governor.

“We need to change it up a little,” Brogan, 51, said after voting at John James Audubon Elementary School, 3500 N. Hoyne Ave. “Rauner is doing an OK job. Madigan needs to move on . . . I feel like the Democrats are controlling too much and not getting anything done.”

* What are you seeing out there? How’s the weather? How’s turnout? How was lunch?

…Adding… Rauner campaign…

This morning, Governor Bruce Rauner and First Lady Diana Rauner voted in Winnetka. After voting, Governor Rauner made the following remarks to the media:

“We just voted. One of the most important elections in Illinois history. Thanks for coming out. Everyone get out and vote, it’s our duty as Americans, it’s our duty as citizens to have our voices heard. We want everyone’s voices heard, let’s get out and vote.”

“I’d like to build on the success we’ve had in our first term. More education funding, want to expand that. Job growth, had great success growing the economy, want to create even more jobs. Would like to bring down our property taxes by getting the mandates off from Springfield and free up our school districts and communities to run themselves as they see fit. And very importantly, I hope we can finally get term limits on our elected officials in my second term.

…Adding… That’s a lot of stops…

Northside of Chicago, my precinct opened 45 minutes late. I voted at 10:30 and was #146. In 2014 the precinct turned out 350 total. I’d say it’s running ahead of that pace.

  2. - Because I said so.... - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:35 am:

    Gotta love the Blago sign!

  3. - Chi Native - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:35 am:

Approximately 400 voters so far at Spfld Bible Church (Capital 4/5/53)…pretty steady day

  4. - Cler dcn - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:38 am:

No wait at 11:15 in Normal but lots of wind and chilly. Have no idea about turn out based on this.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:40 am:

Tom Cross has a brat, mustard and relish, with a “blue” sport drink.

Told me to leave him alone. Again.

    - Matts -, I need more help with my golf game now then I can explain, texting or no texting.

    To the update…

“Kendall” - Heavier than expected absentees, married with constant flow of voters.

  6. - Stark - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:44 am:

Would take Rod over Rauner pretty much every time if you forced me to choose.

  7. - Tom From IL - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:46 am:

I was #226 at my polling place in Naperville at 9:20am. There was light rain and a line started to form at the polling place.
I voted all Dems but gave Rauner my vote for Gov.

  8. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:50 am:

@Stark: would take George over any of these candidates. Aahh, the good old days

  9. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:51 am:

Tiny farm town east of springfield, was #60 at about 9:45. Plenty of signs for both dem and republican candidates near the polling place , but oddly there were 37 Jesse White signs. Had some extras to get rid of I guess?

  10. - Illinoisvoter - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:53 am:

First line ever in Wheaton. Had to find chairs for some of the older voters. Thought they must have added a precinct but no.

  11. - Been there, done that - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:55 am:

Rauner - “I’d like to build on the success we’ve had in our first term.” WTH?! Did I miss something? What success?

  12. - Ok - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:57 am:

Why did the Rauners vote in Winnetka and not in Lakeshore East?

  13. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:58 am:

So according to Roskam it is a bad thing to admire someone who started a national effort to prevent teenage suicides (It Gets Better Project)?

What a poor choice of closing arguments. Good riddance.

  14. - FPJ - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

No wait at Sayre Academy in the 29 Ward, but almost all of the booths were taken at 11:30 AM. Full parking lot, too. Certainly a higher turnout than the primary.

  15. - GOPgal - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:06 pm:

I’ve voted R every single primary in Chicago for 30 years and I’ve received ZERO contact from Rauner campaign. No phone calls, not 1 piece of mail. Hard R friends have told me the same. #StickaFork #HesDone

  16. - Ok - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

    “That’s a lot of stops…”

If you track it, its the Chicago red line trail… South to North.

If they were to end it at Howard, we could call it “The Full Red Line”

  17. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:09 pm:

I will go soon with someone who needs help voting. I just saw on the news that Rauner went home while Pritzker is doing multiple campaign stops at places like Chicago train stations.

  18. - a drop in - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:15 pm:

“… there were 37 Jesse White signs. Had some extras to get rid of I guess?”

Sound like someone got paid by the sign placement. Heard that has happened before.

  19. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:18 pm:

I’d say a little heavier turnout than usual - but friends/family told me the lines for early voting last weekend were brutal.

  20. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:21 pm:

That house with the Blago and Rauner signs….. I’m guessing they didn’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters.

    Too scary, even for Halloween.

Who holds onto a Blago sign, after all these years? What’s in the crawlspace, you think?

  21. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:24 pm:

===Sound like someone got paid by the sign placement. Heard that has happened before.==

Maybe? Equal number of JB/Rauner/McCann, Raoul/Harold signs, then a veritable sea of Jesse White signs. Somebody tell Jesse they’re wasting his money out here

  22. - Cheer Leader - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:25 pm:

Was hoping Bruce would say “Yay Voting”

  23. - nona - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:34 pm:

Some precincts in Old Town are projecting 70% turnout.

  24. - Annonin' - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:34 pm:

This might be a good time to translate GovJunk theory about fewer mandatesand lower prop. taxes. He thinks schools will dump “mandates” like special ed and then cuts taxes. Seriously
    TTFN GovJunk

  25. - Jibba - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:40 pm:

6 million phone calls? How many answers is a better measure. I think I got about 1 million robocalls and answered/listened to none.

  26. - Annonin' - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:41 pm:

BTW why did GovJunk and missue vote from their new crib in SPI. Harley off to the polls. Breakfast at the greasy spoon. Drop some “G”s, stroll along the converted parkin’ lot to Obed’s
    Missed a big event there

  27. - Molly Maguire - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:43 pm:

    GOP: “sex is filthy”

  28. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:43 pm:

–14 stops on the schedule for ⁦@JBPritzker⁩ and/or ⁦@JulianaforLG⁩ on #ElectionDay, especially focused on energizing African American voters–

The Cook County GOP types I had beers with last night were banking on low AA turnout.

They were also counting on Harold to get 56% and drag Rauner over the goal line on her coattails.

They were drinking much Jameson with their beers.

  29. - Molly Maguire - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:45 pm:

Dan Proft provided Bruce with those numbers, and has invoiced him. Better cash the check today.

  30. - XDNR - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:45 pm:

As a self proclaimed Democrat I’m sure Diana voted for Pritzker calling it just a business decision.

  31. - TominChicago - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:56 pm:

wordslinger - has there ever been an election where a down ballot candidate’s coattails pulled out an election for the top of the ticket? And there is no way that Harold carries Cook County.

  32. - Anon221 - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:57 pm:

An awful lot of “like” and “hope” in Rauner’s Winnetka message, but not much “will”;)

  33. - Just Warmups for February - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

Did Michael Sacks vote in Highland Park or Chicago?

  34. - Anon324 - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:01 pm:

That has to be a record for Bruce in terms of number of words without mentioning Madigan by name.

  35. - Stumpy's bunker - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:02 pm:

It’s Katy-bar-the-door at Riverton KC Hall (outside of Springfield), where 6 precincts vote. 403 votes in Clearlake 6 by 11:30. 703 votes for entire day midterms 2014.

  36. - StreatorVoter - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:03 pm:

Bruce Precinct 09, I was asked for driver’s license. Had never been asked at any previous elections. Called the county clerk to say I had been asked and if I understood correctly that that was illegal. Person I spoke to said it was an election judge preference as it was sometimes difficult with name spellings but that she would call them and tell them they shouldn’t do that.

I think it really was because they were adjusting from paper books of voters to the electronic machine and legitimately struggling with spelling. It’s a small town and the election judges are respected and appreciated.

  37. - muon - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:05 pm:

In western DuPage I voted at 12:30 after a 15 min wait. The line was due to a shortage of 3 judges at a consolidated 4 precinct location. So it didn’t seem so busy in the polling room.

At that time I was voter 561 out of about 2700 total registered in the 4 precincts.

  38. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:09 pm:

=I want to build on the success we’ve had=

Can we afford any more success?

  39. - bamatthews - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:25 pm:

Apparently there is quite a line at Illinois State University. One student reports she called the (Republican) County Clerk’s office and was told:

“Well people in Bloomington wait 3 hours and they’re not complaining”

“Voters should be more responsible, they had 44 days to vote”

“Well Kathy is doing everything she can so I don’t know what to tell you.”

  40. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:25 pm:

“… there were 37 Jesse White signs. Had some extras to get rid of I guess?”

Didn’t see a scraggly looking man with a beard named Frank setting them did you (”Shameless” reference, for those that don’t watch the show)

  41. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:32 pm:

Not my district, but Roskam just made me like his successor even more.

  42. - DuPage Dave - Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:55 pm:

It will be good to see Roskam in the rear view mirror. Let us never forget the he accused disabled war veteran Tammy Duckworth of following a “cut and run” strategy in Iraq.
