Question of the day

Thursday, Jan 17, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* WGN TV

A Winter Storm Watch for heavy snow is in effect beginning Friday afternoon along and north of Interstate-80 and Friday evening south of Interstate-80, continuing Friday night into Saturday morning creating dangerous travel conditions across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. System snow will then diminish from the northwest during the day and evening Saturday. Snowfall of 4 to 8-inches is expected along with blowing and drifting due to strengthening northwest winds gusting to 25 mph Friday night and well over 30 mph Saturday.

As the low pressure moves off to the east, much colder air will flow into our area, riding the strong northeast winds, producing lake-effect snow showers that will likely add several inches of snow along and inland of the Illinois Lake Michigan Shoreline later Saturday/Saturday night, swinging into northwest Indiana Sunday as winds become more north-northwesterly.

* SJ-R

Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday, 6:00 PM CST until Saturday, 6:00 PM CST. Source: U.S. National Weather Service

…WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH
SATURDAY AFTERNOON…

* WHAT…Heavy snow and blowing snow possible. Total snow
accumulations of 4 to 6 inches. Winds could gust as high as 35
mph.

* WHERE…Portions of central, east central and west central
Illinois.

* WHEN…From Friday evening through Saturday afternoon.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas
of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant
snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue
to monitor the latest forecasts.

* The Question: Your weekend plans?

Shovel, eat, beer, sleep, coffee, shovel, eat, read, basketball, shovel, beer, eat, read, movies, sleep, coffee, shovel, salt, eat, beer, football, sleep.

All in all, not a bad mid-January weekend at home.

  6. - stl boy - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:21 pm:

Staying home, hoping none of the forecast is true, hoping more appointments are made so I have something to read here on this great site. The scotch is a great second thought, though.

  7. - Boat captain - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:23 pm:

Enjoying playoff football on Sunday. Watching it snow and blow and be happy I don’t have to work out in it anymore.

My Weather Channel app says Spfld due for an inch or so on Saturday with 20-30mph winds. Three days ago it was 13″ snow. Forecasts change. We will see what the weekend brings.

  10. - Anyone Remember - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:26 pm:

Stay home, read David McCullough (Truman).

  11. - Give Me A Break - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:27 pm:

Watching my fellow Springfield residents run to the store and wipe out supplies of bread, milk and beer.

We usually do our grocery shopping on Friday nights. Last Friday it was a site to see. Springfield residents acting like they were about to become members of the Donner Party.

I know winter weather is serious but for the Love of Pete, Springfield residents panic like they have never seen snow.

And it local TV does not help. They will station a reporter on a highway overpass and do live shots telling their viewers the end of western civilization is upon us.

    Punisher Season 2 on Netflix

I will be joining the Chicago Area Boy Scouts in their Klondike Derby tomorrow. An all day outdoors event challenging teams of 5-9 Boys to complete nine essential Scout Skills against the clock. All their gear has to be carried on a sled they built and which they supply the (pulling) power. We have not had significant snow on the ground for the derby for some years so this is going to be one fun and challenging event. Go Troop 963.

  17. - don the legend - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:35 pm:

Give me a break= I assure you Springfield is not unique in this behavior.

Plan to stay in and get ready for my first cardiac treadmill test on Monday.

  19. - Gruntled University Employee - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:36 pm:

Since I live on the prairie where there’s nothing to block the wind, I’ll be trying to keep up with the storm with my snow blower

  20. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 3:36 pm:

I normally work Sundays, but I didn’t want to be off Friday, Saturday and Monday. So I have a 4 day weekend. I’m taking a class tomorrow morning downtown, I need to pick up a loaf of bread or maybe I’ll get flour and yeast and make it myself. I’m getting a haircut Monday.

BTW, I recommend “PriestDaddy” if you haven’t read it yet.

  38. - jabes - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 5:05 pm:

Walking to the Brown Line and heading to the pub to watch a Saturday morning soccer match being played in England. Go Aston Villa! (Concession to the weather is that I’ll leave home earlier and take the L, rather than getting a Lyft if the roads are bad.)

  39. - FormerParatrooper - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 5:08 pm:

Left today for El Paso Tx to work the weekend the head to Boston on Monday.

Stay safe everyone. Keep water, candles, batteries and food on hand. And bring in your dogs, cats, or whatever you have that hasn’t a proper area outside.

  40. - Six Degrees of Separation - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 5:14 pm:

Last I saw they were predicting 3 to 7 inches in my area. Meh, unless they lowballed it bad. Considering our Saturday night date options, lots of good suggestions above, especially the pizzas.

  41. - ChrisB - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 5:26 pm:

I had planned to go to DC to visit my sister, but with the weather and the shutdown, who knows now.

  42. - Henry Haupt - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 5:34 pm:

Have tickets to the St. Louis Blues game Saturday at 6pm. Watching the weather forecast but admit travel prospects looking less than sanguine.

Hibernating … and maybe digging out if my son can’t find time to bring the snowblower down.

  44. - @misterjayem - Thursday, Jan 17, 19 @ 7:29 pm:

If anyone is stuck inside without a plan, I recommend the six-episode first season of Netflix’s Derry Girls without hesitation or reservation.

    Brilliant.

–Lou Malnattis in Naperville. Menu suggestions?–

Try the veal. It’s the best in the city.

But watch out for dudes coming out of the bathroom.

It’s Lou Malnattis, ding-dong. What do you think is on the menu?

Kinda sad to beg for so much attention.
