Question of the day

Thursday, Feb 28, 2019

* Oof…

* That encounter was a late spark for Lightfoot’s campaign

* And remember that progressive income tax hike Rep. Martwick introduced a couple of years ago?

A progressive income tax proposal introduced by state Rep. Robert Martwick, D-Chicago, would constitute a tax hike for a vast majority of Illinois taxpayers, starting with individuals earning as little as $17,300 (for a single filer with no dependents).

* Well, the Illinois Policy Institute is still making hay out of it

Congrats, you're rich!

Gov. Pritzker and Illinois politicians are selling a progressive income tax as a "tax on the rich."

But one proposal would hike income taxes on Illinoisans earning as little as $17,300 a year.

So congrats, you're rich!

Posted by Illinois Policy on Friday, February 22, 2019

As you can see, the video has received over a million views since Friday.

* The Question: Your birthday greeting to Rep. Martwick? Snark is heavily encouraged, of course.

Happy birthday, Representative. In case you were wondering, Lori Lightfoot once again slayed on Twitter at your expense. Enjoy (exclamation point).

Do you find this birthday card appealing?

  5. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:46 pm:

From the ILGOP: By all means, Rob, please start lots more “conversations.”

  6. - Liandro - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:46 pm:

    Savage.

  7. - OneMan - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:50 pm:

I’d have gotten you something but since you owned yourself so well recently it seems any gift would fall short.

  8. - OneMan - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:51 pm:

Happy Birthday to a man with such a great political sense that he could be an Illinois Republican.

  9. - Leigh John-Ella - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:53 pm:

    Happy Birthday.
It’s hard to get a gift for the man who thinks he has everything.

  10. - Steve - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 1:56 pm:

Happy Birthday Rob: a taxing personality can age you.

  11. - Responsa - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:00 pm:

Happy birthday. But standing on a box to tower over Lori was not a good look.

  12. - Perrid - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:02 pm:

Kinda off topic, but you should watch his facebook video he released last Oct. where he lays out the numbers and says under one (the latest?) proposal the cutoff for a tax increase would be people making about $65k a year. If those numbers hold up it wouldn’t be so bad.

  13. - wordslinger - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:02 pm:

Happy Birthday, Rob. My campaign has a special present for you — all expenses paid, six weeks in Papua New Guinea. You leave immediately. Love, Toni.

  14. - Regular democrat - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:06 pm:

Your pal john arena was soundly defeated by the good citizens of the 45th ward you are next count on it . Happy birthday

  15. - GetOverIt - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:09 pm:

She’s my hero…and I hope Martwick gets a primary opponent (fingers crossed)

  16. - Park District Alum - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:13 pm:

While I’m not defending Rep. Martwick’s poor decision to join Lightfoot’s press conference (he should have run this by a few people before proceeding…), I’m not sure Lori Lightfoot’s demonstrating qualities I’d like to see in a Mayor here.

At this point, they’re both wrong.

  17. - Flynn's Mom - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:13 pm:

Happy Birthday Rob. I got you a foot for your mouth.

  18. - OneMan - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:22 pm:

Happy birthday to the dude who put the splainin in mansplaining

  19. - Irishpirate - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:28 pm:

Martwick supported a CTU backed aldermanic challenger in the 46th Ward who came in third after spending 80K.

I thought it was a Polinia ethnic solidarity move on his part, but it was more a CTU/Preckwinkle move.

Thanks Bob please support the challenger in the runoff so I can assure the incumbent will hit 60 percent.

  20. - cdog - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:34 pm:

Happy Bday, Rob Martwick, “Exhibit A of the Broken and Corrupt Political System.”

    (mark 2:50 on video)

Wow, she called him out in that video. Bravo!

  21. - lake county democrat - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 2:45 pm:

Happy birthday Rob. Oh, and your 2019 assessment is ready. - Fritz Kaegi

  22. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 3:01 pm:

You are wholly unprepared to debate future Mayor Lightfoot.

  23. - West Wing - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 3:11 pm:

The Martwick blunder, along with the Sun-Times endorsement, helped spark late-campaign energy for Lori’s campaign. Also, voters undecided and fed up with politics-as-usual had an option with her.
She’s got to be considered the favorite given the mood of the electorate.

  24. - Bobio - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 3:15 pm:

Happy Birthday Rob and thanks for guaranteeing me moving from 7th to 2nd place in votes in your ward…Toni P.

  25. - wordslinger - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 3:28 pm:

–As you can see, the video has received over a million views since Friday.–

That seems very high to me, in such a short time.

About nine million Illinoisans are over the age of 18. One of every nine adults has seen it?

Maybe some just really like it a lot, and watch it over and over.

  26. - don the legend - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 4:28 pm:

WS. Just each Cap Fax follower watching it one time.

  27. - Turner - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 4:32 pm:

Lori Lightfoot is my new personal hero. I do not like her politics but love her style and principles.

  28. - Jen - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 4:41 pm:

Sorry, I got nothing in the was of snark. Just appalled at the way Martwick man-splained and talked over Lightfoot. He did himself no favors with that performance.

  29. - Shytown - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 4:47 pm:

All I can say is Lori Lightfoot’s team wins tweet of the week.

  30. - Prarie Pundit - Thursday, Feb 28, 19 @ 11:40 pm:

I had a different reaction to the tweet; while Martwick’s actions here were wildly inappropriate, the snarky tweet was unprofessional and mean-spirited. What happened to taking the high road? It’s gonna be a long month…
