Rate the first Illinois Supreme Court cable ad of the campaign

Wednesday, Sep 11, 2019

* Sun-Times

Lawyer Daniel Epstein is the first out of the gate with a TV ad set to begin airing Wednesday in the hotly contested race for a seat on the Illinois Supreme Court, six months before the candidates face off in the March primary. […]

“I think part of it is that it’s just time to kind of get our name out there,” Epstein said. “We’re doing a good job of telling a compelling story and this is part of it and we want to have supplementary materials when we go around to talk to people — we want that to be how people recognize us.”

The Supreme Court seat is a county-wide race, but Epstein’s ad will only air in the northern and western suburbs and North Side and West Side wards, for two weeks, two to three times a day. Epstein, who is from Evanston, is looking to solidify his base in those parts of the county and they’ve been the areas where he’s laid the most groundwork and where he expects to spend a lot of time, he said.

In other words, he’s gonna run as the white candidate. He’ll have company, however. And a couple-tree times a day for two weeks won’t get him much exposure, particularly if he doesn’t stay up.

* Anyway, click here to watch the ad and then explain your rating in comments.

Why is he walking in the weeds?

I rate it a “D”. Full of empty platitudes and no specifics. Also, I watched the ad three times and cannot for the life of me figure out why it was filmed in an empty train yard that has weeds overtaking the tracks and train cars with graffiti on them.

I rate it as a D+ Full Windsor and C- Half Windsor. He needs to pick which he is going for.

If the system isn’t broken, what is he planning on fixing?

  5. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 10:44 am:

For now, I’ll give it a C. Not a bad introductory spot, and far better than most SCOIL ads. While I agree the location does cause some head-scratching, it does work to drive attention him since the background is very static. It was also interesting to see the coat buttoning - a contrast to the normal rolling up of sleeves perhaps? It will be interesting to see subsequent offerings to see if he builds on the “we can fix it” theme.

ridiculous. especially when you consider that he is a mere few years out of law school and will be found not qualified by every bar association and he needs to convince of his qualifications. he has plenty of money, but who’s paying him to run?

  7. - DE - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 11:34 am:

He’s going to fix the broken judicial system by
    1) buttoning his suit
    2) stepping off the train tracks down which he has been walking fir 30 seconds

It’s a metaphor for the justice system that he is not here to tell us is broken. He IS here to tell us, however, that the justice system, just like the faulty DNA machines and apparently the train yard, can be fixed. By a single justice on the supreme court, no less.

“I want it to be filmed someplace… urban. But not, you know… too urban”

—he has plenty of money, but who’s paying him to run?

I believe most of that money is his own.

  11. - Alcap One - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 4:02 pm:

A-. I liked it. He gets his main message across in a few seconds. He thinks he can make a difference and is willing to risk most of his own money on a far shot. He’s an idealist who doesn’t know where he’s going but he’s on his way.

  12. - Boone's is Back - Wednesday, Sep 11, 19 @ 4:06 pm:

D- watch that ad on mute. He looks frazzled, is dressed awkwardly with his collar up, moves and talks quickly, and the imagery with the weeds (as noted above) doesn’t exactly send a great message. That’s with the sound off.

With the sound on it doesn’t get much better…

  13. - anon - Thursday, Sep 12, 19 @ 9:12 am:

Is this serious? From what I read, he graduated law school in 2015. Is the case he mentioned the only one he has ever worked on?
