Rate James Marter’s new campaign video
Friday, Sep 20, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller * James Marter of Oswego has announced he’s running for Congress against US Rep. Lauren Underwood. First, though, he has to win a Republican primary against a host of opponents [fixed reference]. Illinois Review posted his kickoff video, and I thought you might want to rate it… Marter got thumped by US Rep. Adam Kinzinger in the 2018 GOP primary and scored less than 30 percent against Sen. Mark Kirk in the 2016 GOP primary. Hey, it’s Friday and it’s a slow news day so far. Have at it.

I mean…in a three-way race, who knows what will happen. Especially because everyone will be trying to win the “say the most outrageous thing” to get attention and Trumper votes.
- SAP - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 11:58 am:
Has he released a poll showing himself down by 9 points?
- OneMan - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 11:58 am:
Not sure going full Trump is the approach for the general election, might work for the primary.
I know both Jims in the race one of them outside of politics, I will say this is the sort to approach I would expect from him.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:00 pm:
We first need to consider that nothing happens in Illinois until Oswego has her say. It’s the unofficial motto of our hamlet.
To the rating;
Yikes.
You go from still photos to camera phone video to quick imagery stock photos to voice over thingies to a, I guess, a phony speech-y thingy where he’s not looking at the camera, and the lighting isn’t all that great?
I rate it… probably better than nothing, but there’s something to be said for nothing too.
I’ll look for him, maybe get a photo. Probably not. The Trump thing was disappointing, but ironically showing from the back, lol
- Rich Miller - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:01 pm:
Yeah, yeah, I messed up the reference. Let’s get back to the rating.

This might win the day.
- Cable Line Beer Gardener - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:09 pm:
I rate it terrible-why would he make the comment about politicians with a video of trump? Not knowing this politician I thought a first he wasn’t a trump supporter then he proclaimed his allegiance. And why does a politician in the upper section of the State of Illinois care so much about a border wall a thousand miles away? and no mention of farmers?

Not a great ad . Oswego Willy is still the man that made Oswego famous. This guy will have to step it up if he wants to be more famous than OW.
- Anonish - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:16 pm:
Is he trying to gain support with this ad?
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:17 pm:
Tom Cross and the sport of golf made Oswego famous.
The town’s legacy is far reaching, with leaders in… agriculture, industry, public service… Oswego doesn’t choose to lead, she leads because duty calls, and she answers.
I’m notorious, probably more infamous.
- Ice Scream - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:28 pm:
This guy is Oberweis, without the money. He runs for everything.
When he gives his ‘speech’ in the video, the lighting makes him look ghastly. They should fine tune that a bit.
Can’t wait to see his polling numbers…
- Grandson of Man - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 12:46 pm:
Kind of long but really Trumpy, for the GOP base that is far-gone in Trumpism. Okay for the primary. There are a few token minorities in there, but he’s going for the white GOP voter.

I never heard of Oswego until I started drag racing at the Oswego Dragway back in the late 60’s. Nowadays, I think of that town when I read comments from Willy.
- Media Pundi - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 1:00 pm:
I made it to the: 48 second mark before I had to turn off. Even Jim Oberweis could beat this guy…
- Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 1:16 pm:
Aside from all of the talking points that I disagree with, it is still a horrible ad. It looks like this was the work of someone with some spare time in a church basement sometime in the late 1980s.
- Mikey - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 1:35 pm:
This man should be embarrassed. This is the most asinine video I’ve seen in my entire life.
- John Lopez - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 1:35 pm:
A reminder of who all of the declared Republican candidates in IL-14 are, in alpha order: Anthony Catella, Ted Gradel, Catalina Lauf, Danny Malouf, James Marter, Jim Oberweis, Sue Rezin.
While Marter’s new video is not the pure amateur video of Anthony Catella and Danny Malouf, and definitely not the professional quality production videos of Ted Gradel and Catalina Lauf, it is somewhere in between, call it “semi-pro”, which kind of matches where Marter’s campaign stands at this moment.
As is written elsewhere, Marter is not a top-tier candidate in this race. Those are Oberweis, Gradel, Rezin and Lauf. Marter is on the cusp, provided his 3rd quarter fundraising is at least $100,000 or more. Otherwise, he falls into the lower tier with Malouf and Catella.
The video is OK, gives red meat conservatives something to inspire them. Will it inspire those viewers to reach out and donate to Marter’s campaign between now and September 30? We’ll know for certain by mid October, when those FEC reports are made public.

That dude is so stiff he makes Lurch look like John Travolta circa 1977.
- Professor - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 1:55 pm:
More of the same nonsense. So why should we vote for you? What makes you special - accomplishments, qualifications? Stick with your day job.
- Rick - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 2:01 pm:
Oberweis is certainly a professional at losing campaigns, but Marter is a close second. He gets trounced in every campaign he runs. People obviously feel uneasy about this guy.
- DuPage Bard - Friday, Sep 20, 19 @ 2:28 pm:
This is a bad video. It’s terrible. This shouldn’t make anyone proud. This is just plain bad.
Good luck

James Marter: I’m not saying OW is a friend of mine but you are no OW.
