Question of the day

* ILGOP fundraising email…
Rich,
This isn’t new: Mike Madigan’s corrupt Democratic Machine has a grip on our state. For years, Madigan has taxed our families, exploited our workforce, and built a political empire with no means of control.
And his partnership with J.B. Pritzker now gives him endless funding to advance his liberal agenda at the expense of our state’s future.
So Rich: how much would you pay to fire Mike Madigan from office?
At the Illinois Republican Party, we’re fed up with Mike. And we’re taking action.
While we don’t have millions like Madigan and Pritzker, we have loyal supporters throughout the state who understand the value of donating to make a difference.
That’s why, this month, we’re offering t-shirts to prove it!
With a $25 contribution to our FIRE MIKE MADIGAN Fund, we’ll send you one of these great t-shirts to show that you’re part of the movement to fix our state.
Get a shirt today before they’re gone! We have a limited supply and lots of orders to fill.
Every dollar you chip in stops Madigan’s progress
And here it is…
* The Question: How much would you pay to fire Madigan from office?
- Pot calling kettle - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:28 pm:
This campaign approach has worked so well in the past…
I would pay nothing (for the t-shirt or to fire Madigan). It is a distraction.
- thechampaignlife - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:29 pm:
Or flip the question. How much have we paid by not “firing” him?
- DIstant watcher - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:31 pm:
Is this like a kickstarter thing? Like everybody bids money but if Madigan never gets fired the GOP can’t collect?
Cos if that’s true, the GOP won’t ever collect.
- Grandson of Man - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:32 pm:
Lol, Fire Madigan 100.whatever. If at first you don’t succeed, and second, and third, and fourth…
If I had it, I’d most certainly not spend the tens of millions of dollars Rauner whizzed away in his disastrous governorship and 2018 re-election campaign. He would have been much more helpful to the state by just paying his fair share of taxes.
- @misterjayem - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:32 pm:
“How much would you pay to fire Madigan from office?”
Depends… How big is the cannon?

- Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:33 pm:
Welp, Bruce and Diana Rauner paid out $132 million or so and that didn’t work too good.
Probably north of $195 million might work, so that works out to probably “infinity” amount of t-shirts.
- YourMove - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:34 pm:
I’ll pass.
- West Side the Best Side - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:35 pm:
Since the only people who can fire him are the House members from his position as Speaker and the voters of his district from his House membership, this must be a limited edition aimed at only those persons.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:35 pm:
Like the other t-shirt, I want one.
… but burning cash in my fireplace is more rewarding than handing that cash over to “them” to get one.
- Not a Superstar - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:36 pm:
A year of Anne Pramaggiore’s former salary.
- Former Suburban Republican Mayor - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:39 pm:
Well of course Madigan and the Democrats have brought us to this financial delemia, but the State Republicans have contributed to the mess. Unfortunately, the situation with the President will only more weaken the Republican Party in Illinois. There are many like me that will never vote for an Illinous State Senator or Representative if they support Trump, which will only help more Democrats get elected.
- twowaystreet - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:40 pm:
Whatever amount it would cost to ensure re-election for all democrats in the house and will probably need to commit at least 5 elections cycles for each one.
- Required - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:42 pm:
Good to see Bruce Rauner found a new job as a copywriter.
- Cornfield Cowboy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:43 pm:
$1,000,000 but since I’m $999,999 shy it looks like my $1 won’t even cover the cost of shipping the T-shirt.
- OneMan - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:50 pm:
I’d pay $25 to a different entity to do it, but as The Who put it “meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss”
- Red ghetto in a blue state - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:50 pm:
In Rodney Dangerfield voice, you get a free bowl of soup with that shirt.
- ChrisB - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:52 pm:
More like fire your creative agency.
The definition of insanity…
- Rabid - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:55 pm:
Pay no attention to nonsense. You taking him out in the primary, general or house?
- Keyrock - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:58 pm:
Rauner must have left a lot of these overstock items in the GOP warehouse. Wait awhile and the price will continue to go down.
- Dotnonymous - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:58 pm:
Mike Madigan is to Illinois as Kudzu is to the forest.
- SpfdNewb - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 1:59 pm:
“…as The Who put it ‘meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss’”
They also said “We won’t get fooled again”. Yet ILGOP still uses the same tactics to raise $. ChrisB and others here have said it best, “The definition of insanity is…”.
- Rabid - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:00 pm:
Forget sport betting, when can you wager on elections results?
- Grandson of Man - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:01 pm:
“Since the only people who can fire him are the House members from his position as Speaker and the voters of his district”
Yes. Too bad for them that GOP donors and voters don’t understand this and prefer instead to have angry delusion.
There is one model of success the ILGOP can look at, Gov. Baker of Massachusetts, a Republican with high approval numbers in a deep blue state. Former Ohio Gov. Kasich also seems like a pretty reasonable person and could be another model. But maybe the ILGOP doesn’t want to put in the work and just prefers easy loathing.
- Wensicia - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:02 pm:
After Rauner’s efforts to get rid of him, haven’t we paid enough already?
- Dotnonymous - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:02 pm:
Efforts to control kudzu infestations have included the following methods: cutting, grazing, digging, disking, prescribed burning and application of herbicides. Roots of mature plants grow too deeply to be affected by freezing
- Unpopular - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:05 pm:
$10
- Jimmy - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:09 pm:
Even though I would love to see happen I won’t be buying a shirt. My wife and I are leaving this messed up by Madigan state. Should be Indiana residents by Feb. we are both so excited to leave.
- A Well-Regulated Commenter - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:22 pm:
Dems should sell a version and donate proceeds to Moms Demand Action or Planned Parenthood
- SOIL M - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:23 pm:
To them, I would pay nothing since they dont have the ability to produce the end they are trying to sell. Perhaps they should focus on getting their own house in order and the first step is to accept responsibility for the failures of the last several election cycles when this was the only message they had. Until they can show that they are a better alternative they will keep selling the same worn put shirts.
Also, the only one who can answer how much it will cost to move Madigan out of office is Madigan himself. They would be better off asking him what his price tag is to retire. See is they can raise that amount and put it in a card, throw a retirement party, and wish him well.
- Streator Curmudgeon - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:29 pm:
“Every dollar you chip in stops Madigan’s progress.”
If that were true, Bruce chipped him all the way back to Timbuktu.
- bob j - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 2:52 pm:
It’s a pretty nice t-shirt
- {Sigh} - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:01 pm:
The IL GOP needs to fire whoever is recycling these fundraising schemes and get a real fundraiser. Other than “because Madigan” what does their platform even consist of? {Sigh} Is there fundraising person a “clout hire” /s
- train111 - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:07 pm:
Nothing to fire Madigan
But I’d sure consider paying to not have to endure the umpteenth retread of this coming out of the state GOP.
- don the legend - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:09 pm:
Continuing yesterday’s theme:
Mr. Miller, you can have my answer now, if you like. My final offer is this: nothing. Not even the fee for the t-shirt, which I would appreciate if you would put up personally.
- Downstate Dem - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:12 pm:
To Jimmy: Enjoy paying higher utilities in Indiana in addition to the higher license plate stickers, the county income tax, and the personal property tax you have to pay on your equipment and other items used in business. I almost forgot, the sales tax is 7%, not 6.25% as in Illinois.
- Enviro - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:16 pm:
No Sale
- Perrid - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 3:56 pm:
$0 to replace him with a Dem, maybe $-100 (note the negative sign) to replace him with a Republican
- revvedup - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 4:01 pm:
To Downstate Dem: License plate stickers go down with vehicle age, nobody I know in Indiana has utility costs like we do in Illinois, Indiana government isn’t broke, and the last Indiana governor that was indicted about 80-90 years ago. Corruption is rampant in Illinois also at all levels of government.
- LakeCo - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 4:23 pm:
My kid’s school does a no-fundraising fundraiser where they basically say “write us a check now and we won’t bother you with fundraisers throughout the year.”
Like Train111 said, I’d maybe pay the $25 to have the ILGOP finally shut up about Madigan already.
- JS Mill - Friday, Oct 18, 19 @ 4:24 pm:
Less than what I paid to fire Rauner.
