Because… Madigan!
Tuesday, Jan 21, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller * Issued the day after the Senate elected Don Harmon as its new president…
Notice Himself didn’t say Senate President Harmon. Anyway, thoughts on this potentially “strong working relationship”?

Obviously, he means something corrupt.

Well, with the exception of “himself”, everyone and everything else is “temporary”.
- Say What? - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:37 pm:
The Senate President can take the lead on guitar and plays a little harp. The Speaker is more of a toe tapper . . . . . .a half beat behind, but disciplined.
- Give Me A Break - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:44 pm:
If Harmon allows popcorn on the Senate floor, all bets are off as to how the Speaker works with him, or IF he works with him.
- Century Club - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:49 pm:
I guess it’s better than “Noted.”
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:49 pm:
In so few words, much is being communicated.
While seeing Harmon as Senator, there is no acknowledgement of the congratulations, his elevation to President.
We knew for a year how the Cullerton/Madigan/Pritzker dynamic worked, didn’t, even how maneuvering worked.
Given how things transpired after the jubilation on the floor went, I don’t know how the Senate will go about it’s business, then engage as a super-majority with the House super-majority and Governor. I have no idea.
I know what I’m reading here…
- Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:53 pm:
Well at least the Speaker did not pledge to work in a “cooperative and professional“ manner with the new Senate President.
If he did you might have a reason to be very concerned.
- DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:54 pm:
Well is he President unless the House votes on it? /s
- sammiches - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 12:59 pm:
I believe the kids call what Representative Madigan did here “sonning”
- Commonsense in Illinois - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:00 pm:
HEY! He spelled Harmon’s name right…
- AJS - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:00 pm:
This is nothing new, as the Speaker has often called Senators Jones and Cullerton, the same as he did with Senator Harmon. Very rarely does he mention, whoever the Senate President, the name Senate President notwithstanding, who holds the office.

I hadn’t noticed REPRESENTATIVE Madigan’s disrespect to the new President until you pointed it out. Unbelievable.
- Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:31 pm:
I thought it right and proper that the Speaker acknowledged a former staffer had become a senator, personally.
- City Zen - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:32 pm:
State Senate President Harmon.
- low level - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:36 pm:
Harmon had just graduated high school when Madigan was in his 2nd year as Speaker. Has there ever been such a large age difference? The generational dynamics may prove interesting.
Madigan may figure he can roll Harmon if difficulty arises, thinking Don is just some kid. That wont work. Harmon may be a nice guy on the outside but underneath that lies a tough negotiator. We’ll see.
Might add it’s refreshing to have a bond counsel rather than the customary property tax appeals lawyer the Democratic Party is used to (Madigan, Hynes, Tully and more).
- dying HDO - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:37 pm:
ummmmmm . . . doesn’t harmon come from the speaker’s staff?
- low level - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:53 pm:
==Harmon come from Speaker’s Staff?==
Yes, Harmon was on tech review 25 years ago. Not sure how long he was on but its not like Madigan “sent” him.
- Sayitaintso - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 1:57 pm:
Madigan: “Congratulations to WhatsHisFace, and I’m sure we can work out all the problems I currrently foresee.”
- regular democrat - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 2:10 pm:
The both attended the same high school just 20 years apart. The Jesuit training will come in handy when forming a new partnership im sure.

===just 20 years apart===
Just? lol
- SouthSide Markie - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 2:22 pm:
The statement read like thin soup served luke warm.
- Billy Sunday - Tuesday, Jan 21, 20 @ 7:48 pm:
Im sure the speaker means no disrespect and will work just fine w Sen. Prez Harmon. As we know he is a former staffer of the Speaker…the speaker knows full well who will command the leadership meetings..
