* Heh…

To be clear, the bike was removed from Madigan’s apartment. And Mark told me it was a Democratic Party staffer, so it wasn’t on state time. Maxwell lives in the same building as Madigan during session.

    Harvest gold in Springfield.

  2. - NorthsideNoMore - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:35 pm:

“See the wheels are coming off in Springfield”

  3. - ILPundit - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:35 pm:

This is a metaphor for the DPI political strategy. Finally upgrading those computers with a 386 processor, and thinking about launching one of those newfangled “blogs”

  4. - Not again - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:36 pm:

Looks to be old enough to be made in Chicago. That would fetch a pretty good price at a vintage store on Milwaukee Ave.

  5. - ILPundit - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:36 pm:

Speakers staff removes old exercise bike in order to make room for exact replica.

  6. - Montrose - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:36 pm:

He also switched over to pink lady apples. He has practically become a Bernie Bro.

  7. - don the legend - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:37 pm:

Had the exact same one. Donated it to my high school in the late 80s if I recall correctly.

  8. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:37 pm:

Please alert the Lincoln Museum that Abe’s exercise bike has been discovered.

    Caption: “Going nowhere fast”

Had the exact same one. Donated it to my high school in the late 80s if I recall correctly.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:40 pm:

Madigan, after creating what would be called later as the “wheel”, made this contraption to show off his new invention next to “fire” and “tools”…

  11. - Sammiches - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:40 pm:

Not a caption, but sad to see a made in Chicago classic replaced by something from Wal-Mart. Reminds me of sitting in Elgin Senator Mike Noland’s office and noticing the clock was broken.

    MrJM wins.

  12. - Sammiches - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:46 pm:

Also not a caption, but check out ebay. That thing is legit worth more than a hundy.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:46 pm:

The Speaker, however, decided not to part with his “Jazzercise” VHS tapes…

  14. - dbk - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:47 pm:

American Pickers are on their way.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:48 pm:

The Speaker thought about a Peleton Bike but realized they used the intertubes and there’s an email option…

  16. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:49 pm:

The Speaker got a new bike… all for “Himself”

  17. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:49 pm:

No, there is no truth to the rumor that when you pedal the Speaker’s bike it plays the Miss Gulch music from the Wizard of Oz…

  18. - Donnie Elgin - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:51 pm:

I want to ride my bicycle, races are coming your way

  19. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:53 pm:

The bike is so old the wheel is solid, as wheel spokes were yet to be invented.

  20. - SpfdNewb - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:55 pm:

I think I bought one just like this at a garage sale for $10 a few years back.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:55 pm:

The bike is so old the numbers for miles are in Roman Numeral form.

  22. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:56 pm:

  23. - vote with your wallet - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:56 pm:

    Madigan shops at anti-union walmart?

  24. - Billy Sunday - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:57 pm:

Well, did the Speaker even use it? No pedals…

  25. - Jocko - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:57 pm:

Also available in ‘Unused: Like New’ condition is his Motorola flip phone, still in the box.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:58 pm:

There *was* a basket attached to put his cassette playing Walkman during his rides.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:58 pm:

Leave the cannoli, take the bike.

  28. - OneMan - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 12:59 pm:

Why did it only have one pedal? Because he only needed to exercise the right leg. The left leg got a workout in a different way.

  29. - All This - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:00 pm:

    == Madigan shops at anti-union walmart?==
There are union retailers? Could you tell us who they are?

  30. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:00 pm:

Don’t forget, if you’re on your bike, wear white…amen.

  31. - sewer thoughts - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:01 pm:

It’s not rust color, that’s pure rust.

  33. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:05 pm:

They took off the bell and handle steamers, the Speaker is sentimental that way.

  34. - GA Watcher - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:14 pm:

The Speaker will need a new bike if he’s going to serve another 35 years.

  35. - Rutro - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:17 pm:

    Well Bruce had a Harley.

  36. - bogey golfer - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:20 pm:

    The seat of power.

  38. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:24 pm:

-The bike is so old the wheel is solid, as wheel spokes were yet to be invented.-

Hopefully the new one has a place for his tobacco baseball cards.

  39. - Chucky Jay - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:34 pm:

This must be where the Feds hid the wire…toss it.

  40. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:34 pm:

=== Hopefully the new one has a place for his tobacco baseball cards.===

Ten for a nickel… gum too.

    :)

  42. - Just Another Anon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:57 pm:

    @ All This

Costcos are unionized (its store by store though).

  43. - OneMan - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 1:59 pm:

The image of him replacing it with a Peleton and talking about his preferred instructors is making me smile

  44. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:08 pm:

Habitat for Humanity will pick that up for free. You just have to call them.

  45. - Jake From Elwood - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:09 pm:

Wow, he blew the pedals off.
Did he replace it with one of those airdyne models that blows air around?

  46. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:10 pm:

What came first, extending the seat all the way on this or hiking his sweat pants up to keep them out of the chain?

  47. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:12 pm:

An upgrade from the one Fred Flintstone gave him that had a solid rock wheel.

  48. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:17 pm:

When he bought that, Ray Rayner was still on the air.

  49. - Henry Francis - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:19 pm:

MJM didn’t need no leather with patches to ride this hog.

  50. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:20 pm:

Is that silver thing on the dashboard a vote counter?

  51. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:21 pm:

That thing’s got more miles on it than Blago’s “I’m a victim” routine.

  52. - Just Me 2 - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:32 pm:

A better way to burn calories would be to walk some precincts. Just sayin…

  53. - Candy Dogood - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 2:56 pm:

This isn’t a caption, but my grandmother had that same bike in her living from my earliest memory. She passed in 1993.

Never thought Mike Madigan would make me think fondly of my grandmother.

  54. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 3:08 pm:

I just want to see the leather vest with all the patches that he wears while riding that bike. LOL

  55. - Ogden - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 3:34 pm:

The DOJ is really asking for a lot of late.

  56. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 3:41 pm:

Those handles will keep the suit jacket shoulders nicely square. Seat is perfect to keep the pants neat.

  57. - Ares - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 3:41 pm:

If that bike was Schwinn-made in Chicago, it’s very well-made, and should be snapped up asap.

  58. - Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 4:08 pm:

Picturing the Speaker on his cell phone on his new Peloton.

  59. - Louis G Atsaves - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 4:11 pm:

It’s a Schwinn and it’s the same color as my ancient 10 speed which I still pedal around in (during better weather). Now I’m starting to understand why some stare when I pedal past them on that bike.

  60. - flea - Wednesday, Feb 26, 20 @ 4:45 pm:

Nobody gets it…This is an old fashioned undercover surveillance and listening device. he has to get rid of it before the feds come on to it.

Peleton out of the question for the new one.

My Dad had the exact same one. Good memories of a low tech stationary bike.
