It’s a tough time where the realities are so stark one can’t tell if it’s a sincere post or satire.

Agree that the downward slope is significantly less steep than the upward side. But it is downward trending and is the lowest new case total in 10 days. This is worth celebrating and very cautious optimism.

Much like the low count of deaths on Sunday didn’t reflect a downturn, neither does a single low day of cases. On the flip side the high count of deaths reported today only takes on meaning if there is a consistent number at this level or higher.
It is the nature of statistics to have fluctuations. If you look at the case count before today over the last week the range is from 1,173 to 1,672. Those were on consecutive days, so a drop of 206 in cases from yesterday could be entirely due to statistical fluctuations.

Lagging indicator. 3-4 weeks.

One day is not a trend.
We need like 14 days of that happening every day.

on what date were large nursing home deaths counted?

100% agree. But if you did a linear regression trend line on any day from 4/7 and on, you would see a negative slope. Not definitive but encouraging. Thus, cautious optimism.
-could be entirely due to statistical flucations-
Yes, one day could be. But the trend over the last 10 days is downward sloping. Cautiously optimistic that it continues. We need another week of data.

The record number of deaths is discouraging, but we can unfortunately probably expect to see the daily deaths continue to increase even as the new case growth rate decreases, given the lag between time of diagnosis and death. That does not mean that the social distancing measures aren’t working, though.
The Washington Post had a piece out about how the virus may attack other organ systems beyond just the respiratory system (heart, kidneys, nerves, etc.). No slam-dunk evidence of this (and if it is happening it looks like it’s only in a subset of severe COVID-19 cases), but something to keep an eye on, especially if we see a spike in deaths from cardiovascular problems or kidney failure.

These numbers are disappointing. I was forced to make a scary run to the grocery today. While everybody was social distancing, there were a decent amount without masks or gloves. Even the elderly. Sorry to see.
