The return of Radical Candor

Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I miss the wit, but not the circumstances…

* Yep…

* Best take…

* Emily was one of the early voices of opposition in the social services community…

* Good point…

* The former governor also spouted plenty of hyper-partisan conspiracy theories

“Keeping economy shut (is a) Trifecta for Dems: justification for income tax hike in November, justification for federal bailout of states, (and a) horrible economy for Trump’s re-election,” the former governor said.

But, as Scott Kennedy notes, at no time did Rauner mention Speaker Madigan.

==But, as Scott Kennedy notes, at no time did Rauner mention Speaker Madigan. ==

Then how do you know it was really him?

  2. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:22 am:

If you thought money bought happiness, or education translates to common sense, or going to a religious service makes you a moral person, let the former governor remind everyone how far off the mark that is. Thanks Bruce, for reminding us how bad things could be.

  3. - Lt Guv - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:25 am:

Because. . . oh forget it, just go away and stay gone.

  5. - Sweet Mama - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:29 am:

How can we miss him if he won’t go away? But in an ever changing, uncertain world, we do have Bruce who can be counted on to continually lie and cut down others with absolutely no attention to the truth or a suggestion for a better plan in an effort to completely tear down Illinois.

  6. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:32 am:

“When did policy goal shift from ‘flatten the curve” to “keep everyone safe?’”

Keeping your constituents safe? Why on Earth would you put in the effort for that???

The benefit of all of this is that now we all can experience the real Bruce, without a Comms team desperately trying to hold back the tide of his rambling opinions.

  7. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:32 am:

Rauner shut down the state when there was no pandemic.

  8. - Marquee - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:33 am:

I guess Rauner isn’t afraid to admit he’s pro-Trump now.

  9. - Moe Berg - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:33 am:

Since the pandemic, I’ve yet to hear a single person say, “I wish Bruce Rauner was still our governor.”

I’ve heard many say, “I wish Barack Obama was still our president.”

Also, if Bruce and Diana have done anything charitable to help people affected by this pandemic in the state that they allegedly loved so, so much, I haven’t read about it. But, possible I just missed it.

  12. - PublicServant - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:34 am:

Bruce “back like a bad rash” Rauner, looks good from a distance, but you can’t get far enough away…just sayin.

  13. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:34 am:

    Thank you, former Governor Rauner.

I was feeling down but seeing you crawl from under your rock made me appreciate the leadership of our current competent Governor.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:37 am:

Any man who flat out lies to a Cardinal to help his wife save face with her uber-left, costal, limousine liberal agenda, only to have Governor Pritzker bail out The Ounce of Prevention… Rauner is still heartless and soulless… but in Florida.

As Emily Miller and John Amdor pointed out (go read these tweets), Rauner cut Autism funding on World Autism Day, orchestrated the Good Friday Massacre, the cuts to social services, refused to fund social services, tried to close state universities… all to stop organized labor… and AfScammy.

Rauner clouted his denied, Winnetka living daughter over a worthy Chicago student, ran his business interests from the porch of the governor’s mansion while saying they were in a blind trust… wore phony costumes and had a “pree-tend” southern drawl, pitting regions against each other to divide Illinois.

Rauner’s mishandling of the Quincy Veterans Home, the firing of staff because his wife’s emails sought better messaging, not better governing… Rauner was finally snubbed, while in costume no less, when he drove HOURS to get downstate to be seen by Donald Trump… but even that phonieness by Rauner was rebuffed.

After losing by the largest margin any (alleged) Republican Governor in 100 years, not even getting 40%, Rauner says… Rauner admitted… he was such a failure, he tried to get 4 people to take his place, probably to save the humiliation. No one took him up on it.

In a global pandemic… the very last person I look to for honesty, integrity, ethics, morals… sympathy, empathy… or leadership… is Bruce Vincent Rauner.

    We voted accordingly.

    Go away.

  16. - Ok - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:39 am:

Suddenly, Republicans are worried about the deficit and debt when there is discussion of bailing out state and local government human services.

But writing billions of dollars in checks to businesses left and right was what “serious people” do.

$4 trillion for me, and none for thee.

  17. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:42 am:

In this time of crisis, expertise is important.

And if there’s anyone who knows about people suffering and dying in nursing homes, it’s Bruce Rauner.

    – MrJM

  18. - Teve Demotte - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:43 am:

Here we go again with all the political bickering, finger pointing, blaming. The left vs. the right. No middle ground. That’s why we as a country are in this mess to begin with. Over the last twenty years there have been multiple less virulent viruses that have effected populations across the world. Despite this, the federal government was not prepared to handle a virus of this magnitude. There was and is no infrastructure to deal with this from a fragmented health care system (fragmented research) to little to no rational supply chain to provide the necessary number of masks, ventilators, and testing kits in a timely manner. Governors are on their own. Rauner criticizing JB is not right. While I think JB has failed to marshal the state’s resources adequately and clearly is still struggling to get the logistics of testing exponentially increased week-over-week not to mention his science and data on when the virus was going to peak is all over the place, Rauner should offer to help in some productive way. Clearly, the political finger pointing and blaming is not helping the hard-pressed Illinoisans, 20 to 25% are either unemployed or partially employed and who are also worried about their health of family and loved ones. To me the press has done a poor job reporting as everything is framed in the political fight. Covid 19 is the biggest challenge of our lifetime. We have to protect the health and safety of people first and foremost, but we also have to protect the economy and the longer this goes the worse the economic impacts will be. The fighting and the bickering will not achieve either.

==A broken clock is right twice a day.==

Which is more often than Rauner.

  20. - Demoralized - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:48 am:

==Rauner should offer to help in some productive way==

How helpful and productive can he be? He wasn’t able to be either when he was Governor.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:53 am:

Bruce Rauner was a pandemic we were fortunate to be able to vote away before he did more purposeful damage to Illinois.

Covid-19 won’t be voted away, we need science, a plan, and a reality of the dangers the virus can and does do.

Bruce Rauner was never about solutions, he’s not about solutions here yet again.

Radical Candor was “fun” to see, horrible circumstances to reappear. Rich had some solid tweets, Scott Kennedy bringing his fastball too.

Siding with Rauner now, or having Rauner side with you… that should give pause… Rauner is not about the safety or betterment of Illinois, let alone those things in a pandemic.

  22. - Annonin - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 9:54 am:

wow isnt great to see how GovJunk rekindles all these memories? Guessing he was jealous that Jim Edgar was asked for info. Maybe he should have sent in a postcard with his 10 step plan to kill veterans and cover it up

    QOTD answer
    Boy that’s tough.
    1. I never want to hear from, see, or hear about Blago again in any way.
    2. I never want to see or hear from Rauner. I don’t mind hearing about him as a cautionary tail. He can be used to scare little children and people who don’t want to pay for essential services.
    3. Quinn did try to pay the pensions, and went to veterans’ funerals. As long as he’s not filing a petition or reminding anyone of the Cutback Amendment, he can come back out once a year and wave. Maybe he can be booed throwing out a first pitch at a White Sox game.

“the CapFax crowd running Bruce Rauner into the ground”

If only we had that power. Rauner ran himself into the ground, but the “personal responsibility” people blame others.

===A Zoom reunion show from Dad’s New State?===

It has been discussed, but after asking 4 people to take Bruce’s place to avoid more humiliation the idea is on hold. The emails from Diana how to message such a reunion are, well, priceless.

(Hat tip to - walker -)

When I saw his name and face in this piece, I felt that sick feeling in my stomach that I remember from the years of dealing with him, his staff and his policies. I won’t minimize the seriousness of PTSD to say it rises to that level but there are scars. My anxiety over this pandemic would be unbearable if he were still at the helm.

On a world of disruption and turmoil it’s nice to see Rauner Derangement Syndrome will always have a place to nest among the hacks and factotums of Springfield and Chicago and their media brethren.
Rauner will still be fabulously wealthy while you are waiting in line for hands out when the pension checks start bouncing.

  38. - illinifan - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 10:22 am:

Bruce we voted you out. Obviously you did not get the message. You were not effective when you were in office so not quite sure what makes you think that now you are out of office your ideas will now be effective. 43. - FormerParatrooper - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 10:36 am:

Hicks, what was an accomplishment of Rauner’s that you find noteworthy? I saw nothing except digging a deeper hole. As for his money, don’t care, it is his, not mine. I have what I need in many more ways than his money could ever buy.

Thank God Mary Ann Ahern tracked down this VERY important Illinoisan (Floridian? Italian?) for this critically substantial interview.

We definitely needed that perspective, Mary Ann. Why haven’t you called Blago yet?

  51. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 11:21 am:

I thought this was caustic satire. But its true. Spit take.

Rauner has had two years to get cozy again with like-minded individuals. It is very reassuring to only talk to people who agree with you, and share your view of the world. Thank God rauner is not our governor any longer.

As they do Blago. It’s because of the former governors’ extreme lack of character. Non-partisans can do that—recognize the faults in someone from their preferred party.

Bruce, I’ll make a grand bargain with you; please return to Italy as soon as you can. And we’ll forget you were once “not in charge” here.

  60. - Mr. K. - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 1:04 pm:

    Was it in Quincy?

Yes. His best imaginary day was in Quincy. It was when the little old lady came up to him in Sprouts (a Quincy restaurant that all politicians go to to glad-hand) and said, “Stay strong, Bruce. We need you.”

Real or imagined — that was probably what kept him going.

I suspect there’s another old lady in Florida. “We miss you, Bruce. Please come back.”

    Yeah. Um, no.

  61. - Dotnonymous - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 1:07 pm:

Rauner is to nursing homes as Trump is to America.

  62. - Dotnonymous - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 1:16 pm:

  68. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 2:27 pm:

    - can not purchase a clear conscience -

You have to have a conscience to worry about it being clear, BR has clearly demonstrated he doesn’t.

    - Rauner Derangement Syndrome -

Another snowflake heard from. Rauner was pretty proud of calling anyone he disagreed with a criminal and encouraged his staff to act like complete a$&#@/*s to everyone, but his supporters can’t take criticism on a blog.

Hope you find a safe space somewhere pal.

  69. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 2:48 pm:

I truly hope RC continues trolling Rauner for as long as he inserts himself into public discourse. He’s so thin skinned that it has to bother him and it’s comic relief for the rest of us.

How tone deaf does a person have to be to use “trifecta” to describe a shuttered economy? A trifecta is winning at a race track, where people are having fun. Where the winning horse gets to wear a wreath of flowers, the jockey gets his picture in the paper, the winner gets a lot of cash.

Nobody “wins” in a pandemic. The wreaths of flowers are at the funeral. The people unfortunate to happen to be in public office during the pandemic have to make decisions that can affect millions of people and their choices are “bad” and “worse”. Whether Republicans or Democrats they have to work with tragedy and depleted resources.

  73. - Arock - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 10:48 pm:

So the Democrats let the temporary tax increase expire and then complain when the new governor proposes cuts in the budget because of the decrease in revenue. If you have less revenue you must decrease spending to get to a balanced budget. Oh I’m sorry Illinois Democrats don’t pass balanced budgets, they say they do but when you don’t pay into the retirement funds and retiree healthcare plans then it really isn’t a balanced budget. You lead the State to near Junk status and feel you don’t need to make changes? So you place your decades of fiscal mismanagement on the back of a Governor that wants to change the fiscal mismanagement but the Democrats say we aren’t changing our ways we need to keep digging a deeper financial hole. Well how is that working out for the State during this pandemic with no reserve?

  74. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 12, 20 @ 10:55 pm:

=== So the Democrats let the temporary tax increase expire===

    Just stop, lol

Rauner thanked the Dems when they did “that”, then refused to sign a budget for a whole (2 years) General Assembly.

Your phony attempt to rewrite the Rauner years?

    Have a seat.

    Pack a lunch.

    Bring a drink.

    I have the receipts.

  75. - Deedee Dawson - Thursday, May 14, 20 @ 7:23 am:

“We’ve put this problem almost entirely on the backs of our children (who are at virtually no risk from this disease)- trillions in debt they have to pay back, lost jobs and internships, and loss of virtually an entire year of their education when you factor in ’summer loss’ and limited internet and enrichment opportunities.”
Rauner is wrong. If children get the disease they are usually asymptomatic and they usually don’t die, that’s true. But viruses that don’t cause symptoms can kill them later, for example HPV usually presents no symptoms but can cause cancer later. And there have been children coming down with pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, related to Covid-19. Anything that is bad enough to kill grandma can’t be too good for anyone’s body if you think about it and have a little common sense.
