Yes, we’ve had a lot of rain

Tuesday, May 19, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Farm Week

Areas north of Interstate 80 received a whopping 400% to 750% of average rainfall May 12-18, according to the Midwestern Regional Climate Center. The center portion of the state, between Interstates 70 and 80, received 300 to 400% of average precipitation during the same period.

Average rainfall totals for that week ranged from 3 to 6 inches in central Illinois to 6 to 8-plus inches to the north, particularly the northeast portion of the state.

How’s your basement?

    Still better than last year

  2. - Huh? - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 4:48 pm:

House on a hill, basement is dry. Town has barricaded only bridge into neighborhood, limiting access to residents only. River with 0.7′ of record flood elevation.

  3. - ktkat1 - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 4:48 pm:

We were having seepage prior to this and made the decision to take down the wall this weekend. We found the problem so while neighbors were flooding this weekend, we were dry luckily.

Now we need to fix the walls…

  4. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 4:57 pm:

Spent the weekend tearing out the carpet in the basement. That was fun.

  5. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:00 pm:

Better now but it was flooding and I was part of the relay team, pushing water away from the house foundation.

  6. - DownSouth - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:00 pm:

SW IL - in the triangle between Kaskaskia and Mississippi (both above flood stage) ; basement is okay but sump pump is growing weary. Looking at the river forecast charts - should be able to launch the boat from the road tomorrow.

  7. - Candy Dogood - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:07 pm:

Climate change isn’t just about getting hotter, it’s about disrupted weather patterns.

I don’t recall a time ever in my life where I felt I needed to run the heater in May before this year which some how got cold enough to overcome years of Midwestern frugal insistence.

  8. - WLDS News - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:10 pm:

West Central IL has also seen above average rain fall. Lots of reports of rescues of stranded motorists trying to drive on washed out roadways in the area.
IL River at Beardstown is expected to crest within 4 feet of its record crest from 1993 on Sunday with more rainfall on the way. Meredosia is also a few feet above flood stage.
It’s also effecting current work of the Army Corps on the LaGrange Lock & Dam.

Flooding is a normal Spring thing for the area but it has been especially brutal the last 2 years.

  9. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:26 pm:

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may jinx me.

  10. - 40,000 ft - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:31 pm:

    dry. on a hill.

We are well into a solar minimum; these counts courtesy of spaceweather dot com.

    Spotless Days
    Current Stretch: 17 days
    2020 total: 108 days (77%)
    2019 total: 281 days (77%)
    2018 total: 221 days (61%)
    2017 total: 104 days (28%)

Cloudier, cooler, wetter, and a possible multi-cycle/multi-decade of more of the same.
    Plan ahead.

  11. - Proud Sucker - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:39 pm:

Tomorrow I will be taking the day off to replace my 1/2 horse sump pump. I replaced the primary (1/3 horse) two year ago. The 1/2 was cavitating badly Sunday afternoon. Took less than 1″ of water in basement shop, so no major clean-up. Fox River has receded about .3 feet since yesterday.

  12. - Dave Clarkin - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:48 pm:

It was partly flooded but it’s dry now.

Electricians were here today repairing sump pump circuit.

US Waterproofing is due on Friday to relocate the discharge for the sump pump so that the water can be evacuated to the alley.

Drywallers will finish taping, mudding, sanding and painting just after Memorial Day.

In Phase 4, we’ll finish painting and flooring my work room turned family rec room and dust off my Atari 2600 from 1977. It’s already a killer ping pong room.

  13. - Ok - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:49 pm:

    “How’s your basement?”

More finished than Blago’s in Trial by Media.

  14. - The Most Anonymous - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:50 pm:

My basement is fine. Not the case for my child who’s been cooped up for days because of the rain. Which means my sanity is at a breaking point. Thank you, Governor, for understanding that liquor stores are essential businesses for parents.

  15. - Just Me 2 - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 5:55 pm:

Flooded just like last year. Thank you, Climate Change. Took months to repair the damage from last year, now I have to do it all over again.

  16. - Cadillac - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 6:52 pm:

Climate change may be a factor, but for most it is property development that occurs, introducing impervious surfaces, without the necessary retention and detention. The design of this infrastructure is not for major rainfall events.

  17. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 7:57 pm:

I’m pretty far south of I80, so we’re just fine. I crossed the bridge yesterday and thought, “why is the river so darned high? We haven’t gotten that much rain.” Well, I guess I know why now. Good luck up there. Flooded basements, no fun.

  18. - SSL - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 8:20 pm:

My sump was working overtime but no problem. I’ve resolved to have a professional put in the best backup system. That should take care of everyone’s water problems for a few years.

  19. - Ivesdale - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 8:40 pm:

My basement is fine. When we moved here in 2013 I built a port discharge header and installed a primary, secondary and tertiary pump system. The secondary is battery backup and we installed a whole
    house generator. I’m good.

  20. - West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 8:46 pm:

Thanks to Stay at Home been spending a lot of time straightening up unfinished basement and taking things out of cardboard boxes into plastic containers. So, even with the sump pump working its little heart out, when some seepage came in Sunday night, nothing was ruined.

  21. - Mama - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 10:15 pm:

When does this monsoon season end? Geez

  22. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 10:15 pm:

“Climate change may be a factor” - Cadillac Man

“Chicago breaks record rainfall for third May in a row” - Washington Post

    “There’s 12 days left.” - YDD

  23. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 10:17 pm:

For perspective, May used to see an average of 3.7 inches of rain in Chicago. We got twice that in one week.

  24. - Cool Papa Bell - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 10:38 pm:

Pay attention to excessive rain fall events. Illinois and much of the midwest has seen a dramatic increase in rain events of more than 2 inches in 24 hours. Northern Illinois has seen a larger increase than the rest of the state. Sangamon County has had two five inch or greater rain events over the past two weeks. Along with a late spring frost/freeze.

  25. - 44th - Tuesday, May 19, 20 @ 11:52 pm:

Leak in roof. Moat in back. I’ll clean it. Time to play some baseball.

  26. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 6:27 am:

Two bridges crumbled in Michigan. What ever happened to Trump’s infrastructure promise?

  27. - Give Me A Break - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 8:22 am:

Around the Blessed Sacrament area of Springfield. Our basement flooded for the second time in 30 days. Lived here over 20 years never done this before. Neighbors who have their basements sealed by the Pros, had water coming in.

  28. - The Magnificent Purple Wombat - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 8:30 am:

Da Big Bad Wolf…I thought they were already fixed during the previous administration. a couple of those “shovel ready” projects…

  29. - Collinsville Kevin - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 8:31 am:

Basement fine right now, though chilly. Hasn’t been as wet here as other places though. Good gutters and downspouts are one of the keys to keeping ours dry.

  30. - charles in charge - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 8:44 am:

Basement is good, roof not so much.

  31. - Touré's Latte - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 8:59 am:

Dry. Did work back in 2013 that is holding up well, mainly tiling roof run-off downspouts to well away from everything. Not very expensive but has proven effective.

  32. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 9:20 am:

Is that on top of the two dams that failed?

  33. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 11:21 am:

===a couple of those “shovel ready” projects…===
Seems like we can’t fix things til they fail.

  34. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, May 20, 20 @ 11:32 am:

Also, we don’t know when the damn started to crumble and well, presidents own.
