Is anybody out there?

Wednesday, Jun 3, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Comcast supplies my internet. This national outage map is from DownDetector…

* AT&T is my phone provider. I use it as a backup wifi hotspot during Comcast outages. Also from DownDetector…

Luckily for me, I can piggy-back on a Verizon account. But my site went down for a bit and, man, if this isn’t the most typical 2020 thing to happen I don’t know what is.

…Adding… Comcast and AT&T are both working again for me. Whew. That was so weird.

nuts at a few stores right now. credit card processing is of course down in the region..

  2. - Mr. K. - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:49 pm:

The fact that the AT&T and Comcast maps (very nearly) match up is frightening.

The more recent maps are even more exact.

    Something is happening.

I’m on a quick break between Zoom meetings. People dropped out of the Zoom meeting. One called in and said her internet dropped. I have a Verizon MiFi that has kept going, but really bogged down.

2020 so far is a dumpster fire.

    What is next? Crab people?

  5. - Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:52 pm:

Haven’t had a problem personally, thank goodness. Might be a good time for a walk or bike ride if you do though!

  6. - BlueRoomStream - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:52 pm:

We have lost our Comcast connection, backup AT&T connection and finally our Verizon emergency backup. Now connected by our last resort T-Mobile account. This is one of the largest outage in recent memory.

  7. - Rachel - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:53 pm:

I’m on Verizon and it is very slow

  8. - Fly Creek - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:58 pm:

Fiber internet ftw. Although an earlier happy hour courtesy of internet outages wouldn’t be that bad.

  9. - LINK - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:58 pm:

My home internet is back just now.

  10. - Tynie - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:59 pm:

I’m on Boost Mobile, and it’s hit-and-miss. As in, every time I load a webpage, no matter what it’s for, I get a “failure to connect” error and have to refresh. Even then, it takes several attempts to get through to any site.

  11. - Downstate Dem - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:59 pm:

I am in a very rural area, and my Rise Broadband is working fine.

  12. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:10 pm:

Right in the middle of that big red Comcast/Xfinity blob and never had a blip.

  13. - Roy Bean - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:11 pm:

I’m not a tin foil type but this year really makes me wonder.

  14. - VoterAtLarge - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:16 pm:

2 of my stores in Decatur area that utilize Comcast were down, but not my store then runs on AT&T. When we called Comcast before news of the large outage happened, Comcast recording kept saying “an agent will not be able to help you.” Very on-trend for 2020.

  15. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:18 pm:

internet vit AT&T slow. I figured it was the heat…that happens sometimes….but, this post, whoa. Feds? Russians? Chinese?

I live in central Illinois, Bloomington. I had my wifi and cell phone lose service simultaneously at 1351. i have two back up phones just in case, and they always work. they too, lost service. so at exactly the same time, i lost three phones and my wifi. (comcast for wifi, tmobile for the phones. i have never even seen this before.

In these uncertain times, internet outages can be a blessing.

  22. - Northsider - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:48 pm:

RCN for Internet, Sprint for phone; both have been fine all day here in Rogers Park.

  23. - Morty - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:55 pm:

Huh, I was online all that time with no disruption. I have AT&T wireless

  24. - The Dude Abides - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:08 pm:

I’ve lost some but not all of my Comcast channels here in Springfield.

  25. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:14 pm:

I lost Comcast for a while but my Verizon cell service was fine.

  26. - Silent majority - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:21 pm:

Newer, better, faster, NOT. How many system engineers were hiding under their desks when the waves of “work at home” hit.? While the”systems” perform even surface mounted components get hot enough to cook on when overtasked…

  27. - My New Hanfle - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:22 pm:

Xfinity tv internet etc down. Xfinity app didn’t work, 800 number was someone typing it sounded like. I went to 4G on Verizon phone to get to internet. Had to disable phone Wi-Fi first.

  28. - Behind the Scenes - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:36 pm:

Lost all COMCAST service right at 1:00PM. Internet came back over an hour ago. Some TV channels are back, but not all of them. Now, that’s weird.

  29. - TheInvisibleMan - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 4:46 pm:

Too add to that, my power went off for about 10 seconds at 2:36pm this afternoon.

    Southwest Chicagoland.

  30. - Bill - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 5:02 pm:

RCN in Chicago and Sprint were A-ok all day.

  31. - WeAreAVillage - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 5:03 pm:

xFinity WiFi here in Springfield went “blip” for about an hour, between 2 and 3 oclock.

  32. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 5:40 pm:

Don’t get me started on Comcast. No problem today, but yesterday, my computer screen suddenly went all black. I rebooted and it looked OK., except I couldn’t connect.
My Comcast TV service has been wild. It keeps changing the channel on me. I’ll be watching something interesting and all of a sudden 3 little dots appear and the channel changes to the Home Shopping Network or a movie or something.

  33. - Nearly Normal - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 6:03 pm:

Camcast automated voice told me that my service is expected to be restored by 8:55 p.m. I am using my Frontier internet service now to keep connected. Yeah I have service from two different providers. I pay a little more than I should but so far it has been pokey Frontier that has been the most reliable since the stay home order was given.

  34. - Right to be wrong - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 6:49 pm:

You all are talking, for the most part, about last-mile providers. (ie consumer and business end-points)

The nation is connected by long-haul internet backbones, some by companies you have not heard of but may be descendants of companies that you remember. (Sprint, Level3, Windstream, AT&T, Concentric, XO, Verizon, etc.)

A lot of fiber traffic runs along railroad right-of-ways, some owned at one time by Southern-Pacific Railroad, which is where the SPR in Sprint comes from.

Somewhere there was a glitch in one of these backbones.

  35. - Right to be wrong - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 6:57 pm:

    Comcast…
    https://hoiabc.com/2020/06/03/comcast-users-facing-internet-outages-throughout-area/

“Update 6:27pm: Comcast public relations says a truck accident lead to their problems today.

“A truck travelling in an easement closed to vehicles struck our network and did significant damage,” a spokesperson said.

We’ve asked where this truck accident happened and how many customers were affected. We’ll update again if we hear back.”

If I were Comcast, I would try to not disclose exactly where this node was. When AT&T was still king of the landline hill, certain long-distance telephone switches were considered important to national security and hid in plain sight.

  36. - Nearly Normal - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 7:05 pm:

Comcast back on in north Normal.

  37. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 7:23 pm:

    I’m not saying it’s awiens….but it’s awiens.

Shades of Y2K alarm bells. Have cash on hand if possible.

  39. - Just Me 2 - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 8:14 pm:

Doesn’t anybody on this blog know a Comcast lobbyist?

  40. - Contrarian - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 8:24 pm:

    Great Pink Floyd reference, Rich.

  41. - DownstateR - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 9:44 pm:

I was down for a bit (Comcast), so I had some beer.

  42. - Chatham Resident - Thursday, Jun 4, 20 @ 9:16 am:

I have only Limited Basic but have an X1 box on my living room TV.

Around 5:30 in Chatham (southwest of Springfield), the Local network stations (e.g., WICS, WCIA, WAND) and all their associated subchannels were not working on my X1 box. Both SD and HD feed channels. However, traditional cable channels on my lineup (e.g., public access, shopping, religious) were still working like normal.

I didn’t try the non-X1 box in my bedroom TV to see if there were problems with channels there.

But by 6, the channels seemed to be working OK.

Seemed weird why local stations would be having problems but regular cable channels were not.
