I’m aware of a COVID death from either Sangamon or Christian county from several days ago that had not been in these numbers. How many days is it supposed to be between the death and when IDPH receives notification? It’s hard to know the true story if the numbers aren’t reported promptly.
- Grimlock - Monday, Aug 10, 20 @ 2:22 pm:
I’ve seen some people on Facebook saying hospitals get paid a 20% bonus for deaths that are due to Covid. I’m sure this is completely fake information but I’m wondering if anyone knows where this originated or what it is based on? Who do they think is paying?

Grimlock, you are right to be skeptical that hospitals are inflating death numbers to get more money. From the Denver Post:
“Under the CARES Act, the government will pay hospitals 20% more for Medicare patients with COVID-19. These payments are for Medicare patients with the disease who are hospitalized, and doesn’t change based on whether someone is discharged or dies.”

I’m sure I’m not the first to say this, but with these numbers we should be talking about closing bars and indoor dining, and other mitigation measures. It may not have met the Governor’s bar yet but it sure seems like a big increase from June/early July that we should be trying to keep from getting out of hand

That 20% was to reimburse hospitals for the extra staff, PPE, equipment, cleaning etc that it costs to treat a COVID patient. Why do people twist things around and then spread false stories?
