Just listened to an exceptional podcast from WBEZ: The Man And The Music Behind The Baseball Ballad “Go Cubs Go”
    https://www.wbez.org/stories/the-man-and-the-music-behind-the-baseball-ballad-go-cubs-go/08ca4edd-4d2b-470f-a24e-a3922451a33b

I was already familiar with the story, but had never before heard it told so well.

Another day in the 90s, another chunk of money to ComEd… thanks, Madigan.

  3. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:18 am:

These Kenosha shootings will be spilling into Illinois politics soon if they haven’t already with Kyle Rittenhouse being an Illinois resident.

Yesterday I saw some guy with a crew cut marching down the sidewalk in Central Illinois with a Blue Lives Matter flag slung over his shoulder.

Your point? Is this a bad thing?

  5. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:23 am:

The Chicago National League Ball Club played yesterday with a “healthy scratch”, Jason Heyward.

My disappointment flows back between the organization, and the fellas in the clubhouse who still played because Heyward gave them dispensation.

The Cubs lost, 7-6, continuing a 5-9 slump after starting 13-3.

=== Your point? Is this a bad thing?===

He coulda been giving water to a white 17-year old with an AR-15.

    I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

The 17 year old, from Antioch IL who felt compelled to not only drive out of state, with the weapon and take up arms, is that what it means also to “Blue Lives Matter”?

The coming days with the Antioch IL resident and his choices, will that be part of an Illinois discussion too?

  8. - Fly like an eagle - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:28 am:

== These Kenosha shootings will be spilling into Illinois politics soon if they haven’t already with Kyle Rittenhouse being an Illinois resident.==
I’m not sure how the murders will “be spilling into Illinois politics.” The Lake County police did everything right.
The Kenosha police did everything wrong.

  9. - Jocko - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:32 am:

==The blue life is a choice. The black life is not.==

WA said it better than me. I want to ask a Blue Lives supporter, “Name one officer who reported a ‘bad’ colleague to their superiors?”

  10. - Stones - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:34 am:

Hmm. So you think the 17 year old with an AR-15 was doing… right?

Shooting a man in the back 7 times is doing… right?

That’s an unusual take, to say the least.

  14. - Club J - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:42 am:

Are people in the Bailey/DeVore part of Illinois that blinded by their rhetoric that they are willing to drive miles to a restaurant who advertises they don’t require masks? This morning Bailey went off on the Governor cause Clay County is only at .008% of the population sick and he’s making a big deal about it.

DeVore’s telling people not to follow the guidelines and file lawsuits which he’s done many of that needs dealt with. I guess I’m just frustrated that these people have hundreds of comments praising them and people are dying every single day. They act like it’s nothing. It is something to everyone of those families that lost someone. Yet because Bailey quotes the Bible and doesn’t respond to anyone who questions his remarks. He keeps spewing his it’s just like the flu folks. DeVore won’t even let people comment.

I’m 56 years old and just don’t get it.

  15. - ChicagoVinny - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 9:47 am:

Has anyone reported out how the 17 year old Antioch resident charged with first degree murder came into possession of an AR-15?

It is always sad when you folks fail to give enough credit to Brady,Radogno, Cross, Durkin and GovJunk for ComEd Exelon success story. Funny but sad

Club J- sad to say this is nothing new. The topic has changed (covid) but the bleep you attitude toward the rest of the state has been around forever.

I am so let down that the North and Southside Ball clubs look so well and we can’t be there to mock sox fans for an empty stadium. Obviously, that is why they are doing so well, they are used to empty stadiums. Please remember to tip your servers, I am here all week.

  19. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:03 am:

Cops can’t stop shooting unarmed black men, amirite?

  20. - Fighter Of Foo - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:04 am:

In our society, nobody waits for all the facts to establish a narrative. There are good and bad folks in every vocation. If anyone has a relative in Law Enforcement, you know how tough this job is now. I don’t envy them. I think the best advice is compliance. If you are making bad decisions as far as the law is concerned. Comply. Nobody wins when you do not.

  21. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:07 am:

Comply? Good folks in every profession? Your privilege is showing.

  22. - Fighter Of Foo - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:10 am:

As a felon and a call comes in that you have a knife. You don’t go towards your car and not listen to the police. My privilege is my right to live in a country of laws. Careful on the mocking Sox fans front. The White Sox are significantly better positioned to win big. Both now and most certainly in the long run.

Cubs play in the worst division in baseball, so that is helpful.

“As a felon and a call comes in that you have a knife.”

    I don’t know what you’re talking about.

When a cop asks you to stop. You stop. Unfortunately , anything can happen when you choose differently.

  28. - Fighter of Foo - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:16 am:

Anon. Listen to the 911 call that was released. Clearly says wanted felon with a possible knife threatening a women.

  29. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:16 am:

I’m always amazed that people will defend cops shooting unarmed black men. Just admit that there’s a problem with that.

  30. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:19 am:

By that logic, cops can shoot deaf people because they’re not responding to verbal commands. Either you are ok with cops shooting unarmed black men or you’re not. Clearly, you’re cool with it.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:19 am:

=== Unfortunately , anything can happen when you choose differently.===

    Paralyzation or death?

So no accountably towards officers, kinda like “it is what it is”?

The 17 year old, from Antioch IL saw it different from both, taking things into his own hands… in a different town, in a different state.

    Deference to law enforcement now has evolved to “hands up, don’t shoot” specifically to;

“Unfortunately , anything can happen when you choose differently.”

  32. - Fighter Of Foo - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:20 am:

The problem is people not complying to laws and commands when confronted by the people we expect to keep order. Unfortunately, the results will be negative. Nobody wants, the results that happened. I respectfully disagree that it’s the police that are always wrong when the person black or white makes poor decisions.

  33. - Fighter Of Foo - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:23 am:

To live in a civilized society, you must follow the rule of law. I don’t know what it’s like to hear a call about a wanted felon with a knife, then him going to the car and not stopping. What if it was a gun? Keep judging in the safety of the keyboard. The privilege is showing.

  34. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:23 am:

“when the person black or white makes poor decisions.”

Yes, police outcomes for white and black people are the same. What world do you live in?

  35. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:24 am:

=== The problem is people not complying to laws and commands when confronted by the people we expect to keep order. Unfortunately, the results will be negative.===

If that was remotely true, Laquan McDonald‘s murder and video would’ve been released immediately,

However, you shout someone 16 times, that is considered murder, not a non-compliant alleged offender.

You may want to sit out a few plays. You’re all but advocating what happened to George Flynn as… an unfortunate incident… that led to protests and worse all over the country.

  36. - Anon E Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:25 am:

“Keep judging in the safety of the keyboard.”

I will keep judging tax payer funded police forces that kill unarmed black mean. I wish you had empathy for those that died, but apparently you don’t.

I this is off-topic, but that’s the law enforcement version of “but she was dressed proactively.” to justify sexual assault.

=== I don’t know what it’s like to hear a call about a wanted felon with a knife, then him going to the car and not stopping. … Keep judging in the safety of the keyboard.===

  42. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:32 am:

    ===comes in that you have a knife===

    That’s simply not true.

  43. - cermak_rd - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:35 am:

Comply or die? Police are not supposed to shoot for non-compliance. They are supposed to shoot if there is an immanent threat to their or someone else’s safety (so a higher standard than just “feeling” threatened).

  44. - Flapdoodle - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:38 am:

“To live in a civilized society, you must follow the rule of law.”

Last I heard, this also applies to LEOs. Seven shots and you don’t find that perhaps somewhat excessive? Stop making excuses for bad policing.

  45. - dbk - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:42 am:

    – cops can shoot deaf people because they’re not responding to verbal commands–

    Oh, that happens too.
    https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/09/21/552527929/oklahoma-city-police-fatally-shoot-deaf-man-despite-yells-of-he-cant-hear-you

Witnesses to the shooting (two police fired at him) were calling out that the man was deaf and couldn’t therefore respond to them.

  46. - KSDinCU - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:43 am:

Jacob Blake was not the person they were looking for. He was not the felon with a knife. So while the cop’s confusion might be understandable, Mr. Blake’s actions were justified, since he knew he was not the person the police were looking for.

  47. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:43 am:

I’m very happy to see all of you all who are arguing that police do not have a right to blind obedience from civilians.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:46 am:

=== police do not have a right to blind obedience from civilians.===

    Simpler?

No one should fear getting shot in the back from law enforcement. These aren’t unfortunate incidents, as law enforcement can make choices not to fire on a man who’s back is turned on them.

  49. - Club J - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:46 am:

  50. - Skeptic - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:48 am:

(Tips cap to - Anon E Moose -)

The ComEd “stuff”… I’m always a lil shocked, not too much, especially to the honesty they’ve admitted to, with the lack of looking how things worked out, in process.

    Both chambers passed, legislation signed.

If it was Madigan that was the fulcrum to all things, including a signature, bipartisan support and senate passage, how do others see their own financial support from ComEd as justifiable?

  52. - Amalia - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 10:58 am:

Chicago Vinny is right, where did the kid get the gun. Information about that is important. also, he was too young to open carry in Wisconsin.

“Unfortunately , anything can happen when you choose differently.”

    Does that include being lynched?

  54. - Last Bull Moose - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 11:19 am:

Do I know a cop who turned in in a colleague to their superiors? How about the cop who ran Internal Affairs in Chicago for the State Police.

Black Lives Matter is not supposed to include looters. Blue Lives Matter is not supposed to include armed people on public streets.

All involved keep making bad decisions. Kenosha government thought body cameras were too expensive. They bought a taser that didn’t work. Domestic violence calls make cops nervous. They can go wrong in so many ways. When a person keeps moving after being ordered to stop, and after the police have tasered him,is just plain stupid. Shooting a suspect before you see their weapon is bad policing. Again stupid. Continuing protests after curfew when the previous night’s protest led to rioting, not smart. Civilians taking weapons into a possible looting situation, again stupid. Cops not stopping the armed civilians, again bad policing and stupid.

At least they arrested the young man from Antioch. Not everybody is totally inept.

  57. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 11:27 am:

@Birds on the Bat - It was a weird thing to see.

I get some people want to fly a blue lives matter flag at their homes or a put a sticker on their cars or wave them at a political rally or post stuff on facebook to show support for police. whatever.

but there was something about seeing this guy by himself just marching down the street with it slung over his shoulder in a military way that was troubling.

Like it was disrespectful to the American flag as I don’t think the blue lives matter flag deserves that sort of honor and it just came off that this guy apparently thinks the police are their own country or something which is scary.

  58. - pool boy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 11:57 am:

  59. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 27, 20 @ 12:03 pm:

===fly the Cub W flag even when they lose?===

On the occasion of losses it stays flown with the “W” representing “Willy”

Some families have a crest, coat of arms, I have a flag I’m probably too lazy to take down.

So much symbolism if I stop and think about it.

Adults who are discussing BLM and the issues of George Flynn, Laquan McDonald, Breonna Taylor aren’t ignoring what is happening in neighborhoods. Maybe if you’d look you’d see marches, and communities, talking about violence within the community.

It’s says a great deal that you feel law enforcement murdering the unarmed, sometimes while their back is turned, is less of a crisis, given equal justice under the law begins with how law enforcement decides to begin that adjudication.

All lives can’t matter until Black Lives Matter is the reality because you can’t arbitrarily say that equality is happening in how law enforcement at times has decided what is apparently equal.

    To the post,

The PGA Tour playoffs are at Olympia Fields, a course I’ve never played, and no one has asked me to play as well.

The PGA Tour released a statement on the past days in support of the protests by athletes and leagues, and acknowledging the need for golf to be seen as a partner.

It’ll be interesting this week as to which players will comment, even comment on the Tour’s position.

No fans at Olympia Fields. Chicagoland is great for golf, would’ve been a great fan week.

Black/White/Blue. Is there a color problem in this country? Absolutely. But we also have a right vs wrong problem. It doesn’t take color to recognize that.
