Apparently, I forgot to formally acknowledge that yesterday was National Puppy Day. My 5 y.o. doggo scheduled a 2:30am reminder this morning. Won’t make that mistake again next year.

Trying to not get too excited but this morning the song birds were really announcing Spring, the sun was shining and grass greening up. Spring? Late Winter?

The crocus have emerged but still snow on the ground in shady spots but we can all hope

I love my fellow commenters here. I don’t know any of you in real life but you are a source of entertainment, information, and perspective which would make my days a little more dull.

I stumbled across an article yesterday that made me think of the commenters that show up periodically to very vocally complain about FOID without adding much substance to the discussion while seemingly thinking it is the biggest problem in Illinois. During a pandemic. That has killed more than a half million of our fellow Americans. So it seemed like a good idea to share, but I do worry some of my dear fellow commenters could find it impolite.

    This should read ‘which without.’

How much “substance” do you need, Candy Dogood? The 2nd Amendment is an individual right, as held by the U.S. Supreme Court in Helle, yet Illinois continues to deny that right through complicated processes designed to delay and deny FOID and Concealed Carry Licenses. The denial of a Constitutional right IS a major problem, because it also places all other rights at risk.
All the bans and restrictions on guns do not stop crime, and that has been proven time and time again, even in Federal studies. Criminals are to blame, not inanimate objects known as firearms. Criminals need to be disarmed, not the law-abiding citizen under false “feel good laws” to make others “feel safer”. That’s the “explainer”.

    Thank you, Candy Dogood.

==yet Illinois continues to deny that right through complicated processes==

So, fund sweeps violated the 2nd Amendment?

I appreciate your thoughts, but I’m not sure you’re responding to the substance of the Salon article and as such you may be unintentionally underscoring the argument of the article and my reason for sharing it. You’re also presenting a false dichotomy that suggests that placing restrictions on firearms imperils other constitutional rights while ignoring that the GOP is literally in the process of a nationwide campaign to restrict voting rights and access to the ballot.

Since you may not have read the article, and I suspect you won’t, here’s a pull out quote that I think might be relevant to you:

“And the gun lobby, aided by a massive right-wing propaganda machine, has convinced them that anyone who questions the wisdom of gun mania is clearly coming for your “freedom”.

The right-wing belief that “freedom” depends on others having to die for pointless reasons now manifests in all sorts of ways. It can be seen in the resistance to even the most reasonable efforts to fight climate change because heaven forbid you have to get a slightly different kind of light bulb so that your grandchildren can enjoy living on a planet that isn’t beset by biblical levels of natural disasters. Or the temper tantrum over Obamacare, which was largely fueled by a willingness to let other people die rather than run even the smallest risk that your doctor’s appointment might have to be scheduled a week later. And lately, it has manifested in the right-wing whining over wearing masks in grocery stores or being asked to vaccinate, because the idea that others must die to spare them the slightest inconvenience is a bedrock belief of modern conservatism.”
